The NBA officially announced the resumption of its 2019-20 season Thursday by a 29-1 vote from the Board of Governors, and the players will have a call to vote on the proposal Friday.

The league has also begun to plan out the rest of the 2020 calendar year. Teams have already opened their practice facilities for individual workouts — the Kings began theirs on May 11 — and will begin training camp on June 30, per a report from The Athletic. The 22 teams involved in the Orlando plan, Sacramento included, will report to the campus site early in July with July 31 as the projected start date for regular-season games.

As Christian noted earlier, the 2020 draft lottery will be held on August 25, followed by the NBA Draft on October 15. Free agency will begin shortly after on October 18.

In a normal NBA calendar, the draft is held near the end of June and free agency begins on July 1, so this gap is significantly shorter. The report does not specify if there will be a moratorium after the end of the league year before free agency, but considering that time period is used to resolve league financials, there definitely should be.

The offseason will be less than a month long, as training camp is targeted to begin on November 10 with the 2020-21 season opening on December 1.

The league had floated rumors about a Christmas start date, which functions as a secondary opening night in most seasons and was the actual league opener in the 2011-12 lockout-shortened season. However, given that the NBA still plans on having an 82-game season next year, time is of the essence.

The schedule is also likely cramped because of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The league cannot realistically run past June in 2021, or players will be unable to compete for their national teams.

These dates are obviously subject to change, but the key takeaway appears to be that the NBA is committed to getting back to a normal calendar as quickly as possible.
