The Sacramento Kings took care of business against the Suns tonight, despite the Suns making it seem like they’d attempt another comeback similar to their last matchup. Marvin Bagley was on fire the whole game, then officially erupted in the fourth quarter to help keep the Suns away. The Kings end the six-game homestand with a 5-1 record and now have six tough opponents on the way, with four of them being on the road.
Quarter-by-Quarter Recap
A solid start for Sacramento in the first. They were up 17-8 to start but Phoenix answered with a 7-0 run to close the gap at 17-15. However, a Marvin Bagley three put the Kings up 33-23. Phoenix had five turnovers, which Sacramento scored seven points off of. Sacramento also had 11 fast break points and 10 assists. Bagley led all scorers with 10 points on 4-5 shooting in five minutes. Nemanja Bjelica had eight points and four rebounds. Devin Booker led the Suns with eight points.
Sacramento had another solid quarter as they outscored Phoenix 30-21, taking a 63-44 lead into the half. The Kings did have a 21-point lead when it was 61-40. Booker led the Suns with 15 points on 5-9 shooting, but no other Sun had more than six points. Bagley led the Kings with 12 points on 5-8 shooting along with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. De’Aaron Fox added 10 points and five assists and Buddy Hield also scored 10 points with four rebounds. Kings had 18 assists and two turnovers, while Phoenix had eight turnovers that Sacramento converted into 12 points. Sacramento also had 18 fast break points compared to Phoenix’s five.
In what was such a long quarter, the Suns outscored the Kings 28-24 and cut the deficit to 14 at one point (69-83). The Kings would lead at the end of the third quarter 87-72 after Mikal Bridges was fouled just before the buzzer. The Kings played sloppy basketball with seven turnovers. Bagley led the Kings with 18 points on 7-12 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. Hield scored 15 despite, despite being 2-8 from three. Booker scored 18 for the Suns.
Phoenix outscored the Kings 32-30, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 117-104. Bagley had a phenomenal stretch in the quarter scoring everything for the Kings. This was his first game against Phoenix this season as well and he did not disappoint. Kings now have 30(!) wins on the season and it isn’t April! It’s before the All-Star weekend!
Best Players
Marvin Bagley is only 19. He came off the bench and delivered in a monumental way, finishing the game with 32 points on 10-15 shooting. He was also 11-13 from the free throw line. Bagley also recorded seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block.
De’Aaron Fox had a solid all-around game today, finishing with 17 points on 5-11 shooting along with nine assists, six rebounds and two steals.
Buddy Hield shot 6-15 overall and 3-9 from three, but finished with 18 points, six rebounds, one steal and a block.
Bogdan Bogdanovic had a better game today, despite four turnovers and getting beat off the ball on defense which is becoming a glaring issue. Bogdanovic finished with 14 points on 5-10 shooting along with five rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block.
Willie Money Watch
You just love Willie when he’s engaged on both ends of the floor, but that isn’t always the case. Today it was, as Willie matched a career-high of five blocks. He had three Friday against the Miami Heat. He also added 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Notable Stats
Harrison Barnes couldn’t find his shot tonight but his defense has been a big help. Barnes had nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals despite shooting 1-7 from deep. They were good looks but wouldn’t fall.
Alec Burks played 21 minutes but only recorded three defensive rebounds.
Sacramento was 32-44 from the free throw line. Phoenix was called for a total of 31 fouls. And no, James Harden did not play for the Kings today.
Sacramento was out-rebounded 54-49 but had more assists at 26-22.
Kings had 30 fast break points.
Next Game
The Kings play the Denver Nuggets in Denver this Wednesday at 6:00 PM PST. This will be the last game before the All-Star break.
