At this point, against this team, you just want to compete. And rip their hearts out. And feed them bad beef. And rip their hearts out again. I don't think I'm overselling the impact a home win over the Lakers would have for the Kings or Reggie Theus. They need this.
But yeah, compete. Stay in the game for a half, or three quarters. Push Gasol and Bynum around. Don't let Kobe push you around. Play physical. Get back all that lunch money you've lost. Take a stand. Put the "No chumps" sign on the door and scream a little.
Without Martin, the offense might struggle. That's OK. L.A.'s defense can be exploited … inside the paint when Bynum's out. Shock Thompson has a great opportunity to further build his reputation. You know he'll give it 100%. Let's hope he executes cleanly; if so, he can have a good game.
I'd love to see Beno challenge any L.A. fast break he can get back for. I'm not sure he's fouled as the defensive chaser on any fast break this season. The midcourt waa session is already notorious, potentially a reputation sealent here if things don't get better. But on less gobsmacking plays, Beno jogs back and gets in position to pick up a potential rebound. He never fouls! Beno, bub, you ain't gonna foul out. Hit them! Knock them down! Make 'em earn it. Even if you flub and give up an "And 1," make them feel it. Beno's stronger than most guards, but he only utilizes it spinning into the lane. If he's not going to stay in front of anyone on defense, he should hit them when he's got a free shot.
I guess I'm sympathetic to some of what Mikki has been chirping: this team has played like it's made of glass. Playing a more physical brand won't help the offense, probably won't help the defense. But it's perfectly clear the team needs a psychological pick-me-up.
Personally, I can think of no better pick-me-up than beating the snot out of some Lakers.
Game's at 7PM. Let's go Kings.
