Zach Randolph was charged with felony weed possession on August 9th, putting a black eye on the Sacramento Kings offseason. But after a court date on Thursday, Randolph is instead facing two misdemeanors. Essentially this is now a slap on the wrist, which is good news for the Kings and for Z-Bo. It was always unlikely that the felony charge would stick, but it’s a good sign that the charges were reduced even before any sort of plea deal.
The charges, according to the Associated Press, have been reduced to misdemeanor marijuana possession and resisting arrest. James Ham of NBC Sports Bay Area was able to confirm that the reduction was not part of a plea deal. Randolph will return to court on September 14th.
The Kings have been quiet on the issue, and are likely going to remain so until the legal process has run its course. Once the legal side is finished, we’ll have a better idea of what sort of punishment the team or the NBA may impose. Given the reduction in charges, it’s much more likely that Randolph may face a short suspension but nothing more.
