The Kings could also forego the QO and sign Greene to a smaller per-year number with cap space, but chances are Donte would test the market if cut free from the shackles of restricted free agency.
If the Kings do extend the QO, Greene can actually sign it before it is rescinded, which would put him on a one-year, $2.5 million contract, with unrestricted free agency available in July 2013. Just extending the QO would allow the Kings to match any offer sheet Greene signs with another club this offseason and execute a sign-and-trade involving him.
