Chris Mullin reportedly taking St. John’s coaching job

By | 0 Comments | Mar 4, 2019

Chris Mullin's time advising Kings majority owner Vivek Ranadivé and the Sacramento Kings front office appear to be numbered. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports is reporting that St. John's has offered their head coaching position to Mullin, one of their most famous alumni and that Mullin is very close to accepting.

From CBS Sports:

While Mullin has no head coaching experience, it wasn't long ago that rumors abounded that he wanted to coach the Sacramento Kings but didn't want to take over mid-season. Whether or not this was true, it all came for naught the moment the team decided to hire George Karl as head coach. Mullin has a contentious history with Karl and there were reports that he was not on board with the hire.

Another recent development may have led Mullin to reconsider his future with Sacramento is the recent hire of Vlade Divac as Vice President of Basketball and Franchise Operations. While Divac is still settling into his job, he's expected to be very hands on, as his job is far from ceremonial. Both these hires have left Mullin with far less influence in the Kings organization, and there was even some speculation that Mullin might be on his way out even before this St. John's opportunity came along.

This has been a bizarre season for the Kings, and there likely will be more changes made as the team prepares for perhaps its most important offseason in recent memory.
