Well it seems like we’re finally seeing the big picture of Sacramento’s moves today. According to Jason Jones, the Kings will be releasing the recently acquired Bruno Caboclo before they complete the George Hill trade, thus allowing them to take on both Joe Johnson and Iman Shumpert.
Why did the Kings trade Richardson to Toronto if all they were going to do was dump Caboclo? Well that’s because Richardson’s contract is guaranteed for next season while Caboclo will be a free agent, thus saving the Kings some extra cap space instead of simply cutting Richardson outright.
It remains to be seen what the Kings will do with veteran Joe Johnson, acquired from the Utah Jazz, but I personally wouldn’t want to see him getting playing time at the expense of guys like Buddy Hield, Bogdan Bogdanovic or Justin Jackson.
With these two trades, the Kings cleared up about $10 million in cap room for the summer, and could have even more space if any of Garrett Temple, Kosta Koufos or Iman Shumpert decide not to opt in.
There’s still a little over an hour left until the trade deadline, so it’s possible the Kings aren’t done yet.
UPDATE 2:46 PM:
Per an NBA source, the Kings will NOT be waiving Bruno Caboclo after deciding to cut Georgios Papagiannis instead.
