The 5th pick has a mixed history

The 5th pick has yielded Hall of Famers and total busts

Now that we know the Sacramento Kings will have the 5th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, it’s worth taking a look at what that draft position has yielded historically. I’ll be honest, it’s a mixed bag. There are some first-ballot Hall of Famers, and there are some massive busts.

Year Player Drafted By

James Ray Denver Nuggets
Danny Vranes Seattle Super Sonics
LaSalle Thompson Kansas City Kings
Sidney Green Chicago Bulls
Charles Barkley Philadelphia 76ers
Jon Koncak Atlanta Hawks
Kenny Walker New York Knicks
Scottie Pippen Seattle Super Sonics
Mitch Richmond Golden State Warriors
J.R. Reid New Orleans Hornets
Kendall Gill New Orleans Hornets
Steve Smith Miami Heat
LaPhonso Ellis Denver Nuggets
Isaiah Rider Minnesota Timberwolves
Juwan Howard Washington Bullets
Kevin Garnett Minnesota Timberwolves
Ray Allen Minnesota Timberwolves
Tony Battie Denver Nuggets
Vince Carter Golden State Warriors
Jonathan Bender Toronto Raptors
Mike Miller Orlando Magic
Jason Richardson Golden State Warriors
Nickoloz Tskitishvili Denver Nuggets
Dwyane Wade Miami Heat
Devin Harris Dallas Mavericks
Raymond Felton Charlotte Bobcats
Shelden Williams Atlanta Hawks
Jeff Green Boston Celtics
Kevin Love Memphis Grizzlies
Ricky Rubio Minnesota Timberwolves
DeMarcus Cousins Sacramento Kings
Jonas Valanciunas Toronto Raptors
Thomas Robinson  Sacramento Kings
Alex Len  Phoenix Suns
Mario Hezonjia Orlando Magic
Dante Exum Utah Jazz
Kris Dunn Minnesota Timberwolves

Even the Kings recent history with the 5th pick is mixed, with the Kings nabbing DeMarcus Cousins in 2010 and Thomas Robinson in 2012. But one thing stands out as I review this list. The really good picks were generally in loaded drafts, while the busts were usually in weaker drafts. And while that may seem like common sense, what I mean is that in a strong draft like we’re facing in 2017, we can be fairly confident that the Kings will get a solid player.
