2006 Midseason Study on Whiteness in the NBA, or Ernie Grunfeld Doesn’t Care About White People.

By | 0 Comments | Feb 14, 2019

We promised we'd come back to our 2005-06 Midseason Study of NBA Whiteness.

Here's the league in full. Note that non-black Central and South Americans like Eduardo Najera and Manu Ginobili are being counted as white in this exercise. Caribbean players (Francisco Garcia, Carlos Arroyo) and black South Americans (Nene) will not be counted as white, despite varying pigmentation. I think it makes sense, personally.

The list, as of February 2, 2006:

Sacramento – Brad Miller.

Golden State – Mike Dunleavy Jr., Troy Murphy, Andris Biedrins, Zarko Cabarkapa.

Phoenix – Steve Nash, Pat Burke, Nikoloz Tskitishvili.

LA Lakers – Chris Mihm, Luke Walton, Slava Medvedenko, Sasha Vujacic.

LA Clippers – Yaroslav Korolev, Zeljko Rebraca, Chris Kaman.

Seattle – Luke Ridnour, Vladmir Radmanovic, Vitaly Potapenko, Robert Swift.

Denver – Linas Kleiza, Eduardo Najera.

Minnesota – Marko Jaric, Richie Frahm, Mark Madsen.

Utah – Andrei Kirilenko, Matt Harpring, Gordan Giricek, Greg Ostertag, Mehmet Okur.

Portland – Steve Blake, Viktor Khryapa, Sergei Monia, Joel Pryzbilla.

Memphis – Pau Gasol, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal, Jake Tsakalidis.

Dallas – Dirk Nowitski, Keith Van Horn, Pavel Podkolzin.

NOOCH – Jackson Vroman, Maciej Lampe, Arvydas Macijauskas, Bostjan Nachbar.

San Antonio – Manu Ginobili, Brent Barry, Rasho Nesterovic, Fabricio Oberto, Beno Udrih.

Houston – Ryan Bowen, Bob Sura, Jon Barry.

New York – David Lee.

New Jersey – Nenad Krstic, Scott Padgett, Zoran Plananic.

Philadelphia – Kyle Korver, Shavlik Randolph.

Boston – Wally Sczcerbiak, Brian Scalabrine, Raef LaFrentz, Dan Dickau.

Toronto – Rafael Araujo, Jose Calderon, Matt Bonner.

Chicago – Kirk Hinrich, Eric Piatkowski, Darius Songaila, Andres Nocioni.

Cleveland: – Martynas Andriuskevicius, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Anderson Varejao, Luke Jackson, Aleksander Pavlovic.

Indiana: Austin Croshere, Jeff Foster, Scot Pollard, Peja Stojakovic, Sarunas Jasikevicius.

Detroit: Darko Milicic, Carlos Delfino.

Milwaukee: Andrew Bogut, Toni Kukoc, Dan Gadzuric, Ersan Ilyasova, Jiri Welsch.

Washington: None.

Atlanta: Esteban Batista, Zaza Pachulia, John Edwards.

Charlotte: Primoz Brezec, Matt Carroll, Jake Voskuhl.

Miami: Jason Williams, Michael Doleac, Jason Kapono.

Orlando: Travis Diener, Pat Garrity, Hedo Turkoglu.

As a disclosure, I had to look at an image to verify race for one player: Atlanta's John Edwards. If the Kings hadn't already played Charlotte twice, I'm sure I would've had to look up half their roster, as well.

Here are the things that astonished me about this study:

Feel free to post corrections and/or omissions below.(And for the record, I mean nothing by this. I just remember Sactown being thought of as a highly European finesse team. Not only are there no more Euros on the roster, there's only one white guy on it, period. I thought for sure that would make the Kings the least white team in league. Ernie Grunfeld had other ideas.)

(Edit: Had Jannero Pargo on the Bulls' list. Whoops.)
