2022 Kings Herald Draft Board: Pick No. 2

Jabari Smith Jr. is off the board.
By | 132 Comments | May 24, 2022

With 67.7% of the vote, Jabari Smith Jr. was the overwhelming favorite for the first pick atop the 2022 Kings Herald Draft Board.

When a choice comes up, pick who you’d want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining.  Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is a draft board, a ranked list of prospects you’d like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we’d take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Monte McNair or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick’s choices.

This poll ends at 5 AM tomorrow. The next one will begin shortly thereafter.  We will go roughly 20 picks deep.

It is entirely possible that I do not know Chet from Chinola,

but I’m going with Holmgren here. His collegiate stats (raw or advanced – take your pick) are pretty ridiculous, and while there are legitimate concerns about his frame, he has thrived at every level while opponents have tried to chop him down to size. Understanding that the NBA is an entirely different animal, my perception is that Holmgren has a motor and a toughness that will see him through.

Don’t mind me, but as often as I can I’m going to insert random interesting {at least to me} draft tidbits. Today’s “nugget”…the Kings traded the 37th pick in the 2014 draft to the Toronto Raptors for one – 0.3 VORP season of James Johnson. Not realizing the pick was cursed the Raptors took DeAndre Daniels who never played a game in the league. Picks 38-41 you ask? Spencer Dinwiddie, Jerami Grant, Glenn Robinson III and Nicola Jokic. Your welcome Toronto.

Voted Chet. I think he’s a combination of incredible talent and fit. I think his shooting would help the Kings spacing concerns, and his ability as a help defender would be great as well.

Yesterday I had Banchero. Today I’m voting Holmgren. Tomorrow I might vote Banchero or Sharpe. But more likely Banchero.

But that’s how this is going. I can flip flop pretty daily on a half dozen guys more or less.

Wait, if you voted Banchero yesterday, shouldn’t you vote for him again today?

I know this exercise can be interpreted a million different ways, but is not each day’s vote based on the remaining players in the poll?

Chet is dropping fast on my big board. I watched a ton of highlights and breakdowns last night while not being able to sleep. His stats are great, there’s no doubt he just doesn’t seem like a NBA player to me the more I watched. I hope I’m worn for whatever team he goes to especially if it’s the Kings but I don’t see him being this unicorn type player. He just seems slow to me. I watch Paulo highlights and breakdowns and that dude has a SMOOOOOTH GAME! super fast and super quick for his size. Can jump incredibly well off both feet and finishes down low exceptionally well. He draws fouls well and his shot from deep isn’t bad now with mechanics that look great and I could easily see improving rapidly. I would love for the kings to trade up for smith or Paulo. Those guys look like immediate star level players. Chet has bust potential written all over him from my uneducated eye test and it has nothing to do with his frame. Something about him just feels not NBA star worthy. I like Ivey over him, Murray over him and I think I would gamble and go sharpe over Chet too. If he falls to the kings and they pick him I’ll be excited but very worried. If they trade up to get him I would feel pretty uncomfortable and fear for Monte’s job security.

I prefer Jabari & Paolo to Chet, but my main concern is his frame. Chet won’t necessarily be a unicorn, but I think he’ll be good if he can handle the physicality of the NBA.

Fox has yet to show me that he be the reason for anyone to pass a player they think is clearly the best player available.

This was a really tough one, between Banchero & Holmgren, but I went with the latter. I have serious concerns about Holmgren’s frame, but with Smith gone, you have to gamble on his considerable upside.

Nothing will make Kings fans happy, I want to state that up front. This is a fanbase that frets about moving up three places in the draft order, and acquiring a young all-star by trading a promising #12 pick and Buddy Hield.

For me, the main thing is that I’m confident that however it plays, the decision will make sense, and will have sound logic behind it. It may turn out great, or it may turn to absolute shit, but that’s the nature of the draft.

Respectfully disagree. We’ve had 16 straight years of nothing, and it has not made this Kings fan happy.

I’ve heard of this thing that they do in the NBA called “playoffs.” If the Kings determined to participate, that might perk me up a bit.

I went with Banchero. He seems to be one of the few who could help with the win now movement (which I do not agree with) but could also emerge as a true number one franchise player. Ultimately the best case scenario in my mind is that we get a player who is better than both Sabonis and Fox. I know that involves risk, but it’s the right thing to do in my mind.

Fit shmit. Paulo looks like the real deal and an eventua #1 option. Worst case for him is a #3 option in my uneducated eye test.

you draft best guy and see if mike brown can find a way to make it fit. I also just don’t see the “he doesn’t fit” with Domas thing. He’s damn good on a team that needs damn good. That’s the guy who fits.

I actually think he fits fine. We would project as having two dominant post players that are elite passers at their frontcourt positions. If we drafted him I certainly wouldn’t be upset, I just think the overall skillset of the team would be better off drafting a player like Chet or Jabari.

Yep. Always draft BPA if you’re not already a championship contender. Let the chips fall from there. Drafted Hali despite having Fox? Worked out–got Sabonis out of that one (and got rid of Hield!). Drafted Mitchell despite having Fox and Hali? Worked out–Mitchell looks like, at the very least, a rock-solid 3rd guard for years to come. Fit is for Finalists, not for Kangz.

This is hard, but if we had an option for holgren I think you need to take the risk on the unicorn. He could be next Greg Oden, but the shooting, passing, and length are hard to pass on. I think that he could play the PF (2nd unit) position while he develops and puts on muscle. Unfortunately this is not win now thinking…so I’m not sure if monte would agree with me. My jobs not actually on the line here.

It’s worth pointing out that to this point Holmgren hasn’t had injury issues. While many of the examples of injury prone bigs were already dealing with injuries at his age.

I know you know this, but it’s a good reminder that Big Boards and Mock Drafts are fundamentally different things. Big Boards are attempting to rank them by prospect quality. Mock Drafts are attempting to suss out what the drafting teams will actually do. For example, Doncic was at the top of the vast majority of Big Boards, but Ayton was #1 in most Mock Drafts because people knew PHX wanted a Big and Ayton was a local star.

As a sidenote, someone here (or on the previous site) used to do an awesome spreadsheet that collected and analyzed the various mock drafts and big boards to create consensus rankings. That was always one of the very best user generated posts of the year.

Phoenix really shit the bed as far as Ayton’s situation goes, and they may lose him for nothing. He has the ability to dominate the paint at both ends.

Interestingly, while we’re absolutely looking at a small sample size special, Ayton was seven for nineteen from three last season. It’s hardly definitive, but it appears that he’s putting the work in to add that wrinkle to the things he already does well. I hope that the young man gets paid.

Brett Huff does this very thing on Twitter.. I’d follow Bobby Gerould as he does something similar but adds analysis. Of course he’s wrong since he has my boy Sochan 23rd in his rankings. 😊 And of course there’s the SPTSJunkie whom you might be remembering. He’ll likely have a FP post on his draft rankings here at TKH sometime neggie t.he draft.

I would trade this pick. But since it’s a board not a mock, I’d cross my fingers, close my eyes, ask the universe for guidance, clench, and pick Chet. On paper he is a perfect fit. On paper. This the clenching.

There’s 2 guys with both ridiculous upside and considerable risk in this draft. One of them is worth the #2 pick: Chet Holmgren.
Paolo is good, he’s probably better than Chet now. But I don’t know that he’s elite and Holmgren has that kind of potential. I’ve kept an eye on him since HS and he has proven to be able to adapt and thrive at every level. He comes with a few concerns but he’s a high basketball IQ guy who should be able to contribute sooner than later by playing alongside Bones, as well making an immediate impact on defense.

I went with Chet Holmgren despite my serious concerns about his body holding up in the NBA. If Monte wants to trade up for Chet I would probably not be happy about it but if Chet somehow falls to #4 he is absolutely the right pick

Another vote for Banchero from this cat.

Maybe if Vivek and his team of techie scientists could fashion a bionic body for Chet I’d go with him. But Paolo’s body is….I’m getting all Ailene just thinking about his body.

Dude is a stud. He should win rookie of the year. Not that that matters one bit, but considering the idea that Vivek/McNair are in win now mode, I think Paolo is the one guy who will be making the most impact this first year.

Only posting here because it’s top thread, not direct fit.

Triple trade back but maintaining a solid pick. Let’s goooooooo.

Kings trade #4 pick and Holmes to Detroit for #5 and Grant. Detroit jumps for Ivey to give a big pop to the guard position setting up a young trio of Ivey, Cade and Bey.

Kings trade #5 pick, Barnes, Terrance Davis and (full lotto protected ’23 pick if needed) to IND for #6 and Malcom Brogdon. IND jumps for Sharpe to play that Guard/Wing spot filling a need with MASSIVE upside player.

Kings then trade #6 pick and Donte D to Portland for Josh Hart and #7. Portland jumps for top player left Keegan Murry.

Kings then select AJ Griffin at #7.

Fox, Davion
Brogdon, ?
Hart, AJ
Grant, Lyles
Sabonis, D Jones

First question, do the other teams come to the table for these trades?
Second, Does that lineup move us into legit playoff contention (more than just play in contention)?
Third, if one of the big 3 don’t fall do you think this is good value for the Kings?

Thanks for playing!

BTW I selected Chet for the poll.

Some thoughts. Please comment.

  1. Draft Keegen Murray
  2. Trade Holmes and both second rounds to Hornets for pick #13. Draft Obaci Abajii
  3. Trade Barnes and Holiday plus 2023 first round to the Hawks for John Collins.
  4. Acquire Mo Bamba thru free agency.

The starters would be Fox, Abajii, Murray, Collins Sabonis. Backups are Mitchell, Divinsenso, Davis, Lyles/Metu and Bamba. Still have some players for small moves.

The Hornets would not accept that trade and I wouldn’t give up Barnes and a first round for Collins. Bamba was intriguing for awhile but I don’t see anything there.

  1. We aren’t getting to the playoffs with 2 rookies in our starting lineup.
  2. I don’t think we get that deal from the Hornets.
  3. I don’t like Barnes and a first for Collins, Holmes and a 1st sure, not Barnes.

Then move Abajii over to backup and insert Donte in his place. The Hornets really what a better center than they have now. Unless they want to pick up a rookie center then I think they would do the deal. The Hawks don’t want Holmes but to replace Collins with a really good switchable forward and a first plus a three point shooter they might do it. Collins is really unhappy with his situation in Atlanta.

Even you could pull off all those moves, I’m not sure that team is in a great place. I think that team is REALLY going to struggle to defend people. Counting on two rookie starters isn’t generally a great plan. And, well, I’m just not high on Agbaji.

Defenders are Abajii, Murray,Mitchell, Divinsenso, and Davis. Any team has to buy in on defense. It is somewhat the coaches that have do put in the time and the players have to have the work ethics to make it work. That means for any team.

I like it. That’s thinking out of the box. I’m more interested in how the Kings utilize the 4 pick than who they draft. If they did something like you just proposed I would be impressed.

If we trade back and get Grant, then select Murray or Sharpe, I’d consider that a gigantic coup on its own. But if your entire plan fell into place, that would be pretty spectacular.

The only way I’d be happy w/trading back to #7 is if the Kings get Lillard. That won’t happen. I’d much rather have Sharpe, Murray or Ivey than Griffin & Hart. I’m not particularly interested in Grant, so I don’t think I’d do that trade. I’d be happy to get #6 & Brogdon. I’d do that regardless of the other trades.

Too many moving parts. Too many assumptions. I’d only consider a package with Detroit and a back up package with IND.

I went Chet. Can’t teach length and size. If his offense comes around and develops, his ceiling is the highest of anyone in the draft. Yes, some bust potential, but he competes. I’m in on Chet.

Yeah, I think people tend to think “soft” when they see his frame, but Chet definitely doesn’t play soft. He doesn’t win many strength matchups, but he doesn’t shy away from them and always plays aggressively.

I’d get it if people saw things that way. Murray is already pretty good at the things that it’s hoped that Banchero will add to his game, which is a point for Murray. Banchero has a higher ceiling, though, and whether he gets there or not may largely depend on his willingness to do the work.

I’ve not heard anything at all about his work ethic being a problem, I want to be clear about that. I’m hopeful that the Kings can get Banchero in for serious workout and evaluation. I’d guess these visits are going to heavily influence where he lands from one to four.

I saw a 30 minute documentary episode on Banchero and feel I get him a lot more after watching it. See how he was trained. His moves and shot selection heavily influenced by his trainer, mostly for the better, but some noted concerns in the evaluations regarding deep fade away 2’s and some overcomplicating decisions (eg., multiple move sequence to get open for a mid-range jumper, then at the last second passing awkwardly to the nearest player, sort of off target) can be traced to that. I think his capacity is pretty high, as he has seemed to learn all the moves he was taught, which raises the question, how much more can he learn? If I had to predict who the better nba player will be, i’d say Banchero, but that’s without doing a deep dive on either. They both seem like ballers.

I’m pretty even on them, I like the way Murray plays the game, he plays well in a motion offense; he can get buckets down low with quality low post moves, he seems to be a good week side help defender has a good feel for the game. He is more polished offensively, he does have good vertical, and his weak side Shotblocking is strong. I think he fits today’s game really well and I’m valuing where he’s at today and fit more than potential.

I am waxing for the Brazilian – Sao Paolo Banchero.

The Kings need BPA. Am I worried that Banchero will take the ball out of Sabonis’ hands? SRSLY? Banchero, is my guess for BPA of the 2022 draft.

Unlike Mr. Wissinger or Mr. Hessing or Mr. Sims or Mr. Smits or anyone else who makes this claim; I don’t know nothing.

I know less than nothing!

Of course, knowing less than nothing, I find out that Banchero is actually Italian, not Brazilian.

So that makes him not unlike Andrea Bargnani, or mambo italiano! I am still sticking with the Big Blue Devil.

Paolo Banchero is an Italian-American. His last name is pronounced

ban- KEHR-o

In Italian, a “ch” is pronounced as a hard ‘k’ sound, not the sound like in “Horchata” like in Spanish.

He was born in Seattle and grew up there. Hence the “Italian-American” designation.

“Paolo Banchero’s parents are Mario Banchero (Father) and Rhonda Smith-Banchero (Mother).

Paolo is an American-Italian by nationality and is biracial. His father’s side is where Paolo’s Italian heritage comes from.”

And though it reads “Italian-American” in his bio, perhaps it should read:

Italian/African-American. His mom is Rhonda Smith-Banchero, and she played pro basketball. She was drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs.

Just realized I talked about Spanish (horchata)…which has nothing to do with Brazil…(portuguese) but I hope you still get my point about the pronunciation of his name.

Also PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

Please don’t let your friends/loved ones pronounce Bruschetta “broo-SHET-uh”. It’s a fireable offense, absolutely makes you look uncultured, and is a sin against the Roman Catholic church.

It is “broo-SKET-uh”. Again, hard ‘K’ sound for the “ch”.

Ah, sorry–one more thing:

Banchero was eligible to play for the Italy national basketball team and indicated he wants to represent Italy in international competitions.[22] He was selected to the country’s 24-man squad for the EuroBasket 2022 qualification games in November 2020, however he did not play.[23]

I did not know this about Paulos heritage. Didn’t think to even look into it. I just spent 6 weeks in São Paulo…. Do the math, I was there during the draft lottery. I think this means Paulo is Sacramento bound!! If so, you’re welcome Sacramento. I’ll accept gifts.
