With 43.7% of the last vote, Johnny Davis is off the board. He joins Tari Eason, Jeremy Sochan, AJ Griffin, Dyson Daniels, Bennedict Mathurin, Keegan Murray, Jaden Ivey, Shaedon Sharpe, Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren and Jabari Smith Jr.
When a choice comes up, pick who you’d want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining. Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is a draft board, a ranked list of prospects you’d like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we’d take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Monte McNair or anyone else would choose in a slot.
Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick’s choices.
This poll ends at 5 AM tomorrow. The next one will begin shortly thereafter. We will go roughly 20 picks deep.
At this point of the draft you have to bet on the upside of Dieng/Jovic/TyTy. They’re the last set of guys with All-Star potential imo. As for the high floors, can’t go wrong with Liddell/Duren/Agbaji.
Ochai Agbaji this time. The shooting and defense is nice. The playmaking and any dribbling is not so nice. But he should come in and shoot it well, and the defense is needed.
Went with Duren again. Williams measureables are very intriguing. I wonder if he would’ve shined more not playing with all the blue chip talent Duke usually carries?
I do think that Williams would have stood out more on a different team. He’s very skilled, and incredibly athletic.
In my youtube scouting I’ve found it hard to really define the difference between Duren and Williams.
I think Duren is a more fluid and natural athlete. Williams has better feel and basketball instincts.
1 obvious difference is that Williams is bigger.
Went with OA, mostly out of being a good positional fit.
I think Williams & Duren are going to have nice careers, and Williams in particular will likely evolve into a stretch five. He’s at 73% from the free throw line, and has a 7’7″ wingspan, good hands, and is a capable passer.
I’m going w/Jovic’s playmaking & shooting.
Went with Duren’s upside here. At #13, it’s short drive to Stockton.
Duren has a decent floor, but I don’t think he has a high ceiling in today’s NBA.
Who are some realistic players that the Kings can target by trading the 4th pick?
Depends on the package? Could a 4-5 swap get Jerami Grant? A 4-6 swap get Duarte? A 4-7 swap get Josh Hart? (Not thrilled with any of these, but for the Keegan Murray fans, Murray/Grant would be better than Murray).
4 for Collins(Atl) would be too much of a giveaway for the Kings. Would 4 for Collins/16 be good enough? Depends on what you think of Collins.
4/Fox for Donovan Mitchell. This seems like a good time for me to stop…
If the Kings walked away from this draft with Keegan Murray AND Duarte, along with whoever we get at #37 (who could be an older, NBA ready contributor like Wendell Moore) I’d be absolutely thrilled. John Collins + Agbaji would also be pretty exciting to me.
Yes, Collins and Agbaji could contribute to more wins this year than Ivey. My concern would be two, three, four years from now. But that really comes down to what you think of Ivey vs. these other potential options.
It’s a nice problem to have – much nicer than simply being in the 7 slot to begin with.
My preferred move down deals would be something like:
The 4th pick for the 9,20,25 and San Antonio absorbing the contracts of Holiday, Harkless and Len. That’s provided Jeremy Sochan is there at 9, which he may or may not be, or there’s someone else they really like at 9.
My other trade down scenario is with OKC for the 12, 30 and 4 or maybe 5 of their future 1st’s.
Of course, I’m asking a lot for the 4th pick. I think the San Antohio offers you more flexibility in trades and Free Agency both (and allowing you to actually operate under the cap, for that matter) come July.
But would McNair go for that? SA or OKC? Who knows? We’ll find out because I have a feeling McNair will be aggressive more than he has a reputation for. This is a very big summer for the organization, maybe the biggest ever if you believe someone like Jerry Reynolds. Which I do, but I think there’s some weight in Jerry’s statement.
Eh, who knows? That’s part of the fun of this, me thinks.
Best part of the King’s season is the off-season
Eh, not for me. It’s just, you can’t get the actual season without the actual off-season coming first.
Is something like OG Anunoby and future 1st rounders for the #4 and Holmes + Holiday intriguing?
Not to me. That’s the epitome of short sighted, IMO.
Basing this off of the stated “win-now” comments by the org. I would just keep the pick and move on with the rest of the off-season
For me, I think you use the pick to bolster your future and if you can the here and now, too. I’ve said it a bunch of times, but I think you’re drafting for future potential because you’re getting a young player.
Where you change the course of next season is through trades and Free Agency. Trades, of course, especially given that Sac is never going to be a destination FA spot.
Not to me.
If there was a trade for the #4 with San Antonio I’d want their #9, Keldon Johnson, and Devin Vassell. They could have the #4 and any filler they want not named Fox, Sabonis, Mitchell, or Barnes.
Sure but you aren’t likely to get that Adam. But that wouldnt upset me either.
Yeah, it’s unlikely, but it’s where I’d start. I’d even be willing to add a 2023 lottery protected first. Something like:
#4, Harkless, TD, and a lottery protected 2023 (which becomes two future second round picks if it doesn’t convey) for the #9, Johnson and Vassell.
If for some reason Monte and Brown can turn things around by next season with the #9, Johnson and Vassel and the Kings make the playoffs, I’d have no problem handing the Spurs a late teens pick next year. Newsflash: I doubt that happens.
Hence the 3 picks and the dumping of Holiday, Harkless and Len’s salary on San Antonio. I think it’s a worthwhile compromise.
I don’t see why the dumping of Holiday, Harkless and Len’s salary has any advantage over taking on the guaranteed deals of #20 and #25 both of who may not be any better than the three players you traded away. Those 3 Kings make around $14M combined for just next season and those two picks will make roughly a combined $4M, plus additional years.
For me it’s basically trading away the #4 for the #9 and a meager $10M in cap relief for the 2022-23 season.
Well, then, why make any moves at all?
I get your point. It may be too light a return for the 9th pick. But the Kings don’t have cap room now, and that extra 10 million allows you to operate under the cap instead of over the cap which is where the Kings are at now.
That’s part of the premise. It allows you to draft a player for later AND improve your flexibility to obtain existing NBA players for next year.
I guess I just worry about “your ability to obtain existing NBA players for next year.” If the strategy is to open cap space for free agency then I think that is the.worst possible path. The Kings just aren’t going to get anyone of quality in free agency. It’s a talent league and the only way for the Kings to get talent is via the draft or trade, not free agency.
It’s not really about Free Agency, it opens up pathways for trades.
It does do that, but I guess that’s just a lot of ducks to get in a row for me. Making trades to open up cap space to make more trades down the road is a process that I don’t think Monte wants to do with his supposed mandate.
Guess we’ll see won’t we!
And 1 – I would prefer Ivey (or Banchero or Holmgren…no way Smith drops to 4) over any of the deals that I noted above. I’m not a fan of trading down or out of the 4 slot, but it won’t surprise me if the win-now edict of the organization sees it differently.
That was my thinking based on the edict to win-now.
Mitchell is an incredible player, but I’m not convinced that he’s one of those that guy guys. He’d still be surrounded by teammates that don’t defend, and not have the luxury of Gobert behind him to clean up his mistakes.
He’s one hell of a player, though. I don’t know if Mike Brown could get more out of him than Quin Snyder, but would love to hear some opinions.
Spider, Ox and Fox, and Black Falcon? Unrealistic but Donovan Mitchell would be far and away the best player on the Kings. Fox and the 4th and 2024 top 5 protected 1st is more in the ballpark. But again, Mitchell is going to a Major Market – when I think hard, and again, why would Utah throw it all away and start over and trade away their best player – I like Donovan Mitchell on Dallas with Luka. Or as a Clipper with Kawhi and PG13.
Conjecture, Speculation… Love it! It’s the spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine of the actual season an easier swallow.
Went Jalen Duren today, went Nikola Jovic yesterday might go Jalen Jovic tomorrow.
I have another 16 days of deciding that the Kings should draft Keegan Murray with the 4 and be happy or Jalen Ivey at 4 and be happy. Then I read an article like this:
https://www.basketballnetwork.net/latest-news/you-aint-working-hard-enough-anthony-edwards-reveals-how-steve-kerr-roasted-him-in-his-pre-draft-workout
and wonder about Shaedon Sharpe. And don’t forget about Benedict Mathurin and AJ Griffin. And then they could trade down. Or trade 4 away. What does this mean?
I am easily influenced and thoroughly unconvinced.
Which is just like always, every draft. Probably best that I throw in an ol’ time In GP We Trust, and modernize it to In MM We Trust or What Would GP Do? (pre-2003 version).
Hopefully Mike Brown can bring some of GS’s culture to the Kings (though Idk if he’ll be able to do that).
I feel seen.
For anyone who has The Athletic, here’s an article that has college & G-League coaches & people in NBA FO’s discuss guards like Ivey, (briefly) Sharpe, Daniels & others:
https://theathletic.com/3350046/2022/06/07/nba-draft-top-guards-analysis/
Lot of interesting thoughts, I thought, reading that. A definite recommended read.
Asinine trade idea: The #4 + Holmes + Salary filler for #11 Knicks pick + Julius Randle.
Use #11 to pick up Mathurin or Griffin or Sharpe (if he drops that far) for the SG spot. Rationale – we don’t have time to develop a rookie on the Sabonis timeline. Kings are win-now. The Knicks are also in rebuild mode and Randle doesn’t fit their timeline. Randle is also disgruntled and has many years left on his contract. Adding Randle adds another great passing big who can cut, pass, handle the ball and hit the 3. A Sabonis + Randle pairing would be a sight to behold with all of the low post passing with both bigs adding space/ability to hit the 3. It would likely put us in the midst of the playoffs. Drafting a 3 point specialist at the #11 spot would complete the team out.
PG: Fox/Davion
SG: (Griffin or Mathurin)/Davion
SF: Barnes
PF: Randle
C: Sabonis
NY has nothing that makes me want to drop down to #11 & I don’t think that Sabonis & Randle would be a good fit from a spacing or defensive perspective.
They both can switch, pass and hit the 3. Having a PF averaging 20 ppg, has hit 41% from the 3 during the 20-21 season and averages more assists than Sabonis is bad for spacing? I can see some defensive issues, but that’s about it.
The 2020-21 season was an outlier for Randle & I’m skeptical about how good the perimeter defense would be if Randle & Sabonis were teammates.
It’s hard to imagine a worse fit with Sabonis than Randle.
Yup.
Hard to imagine a PF who averaged 5 assists and shot 41% from the 3 in the 20-21 season? Okay lol
FIFY…Hard to imagine a PF who HAS averaged 3.2 assists and HAS shot 33% from 3 for his CAREER.
What do we care what Randle averaged the season before last?
If we are going to trade for a player in any given year, then we should trade for Duncan Robinson of 2019-2020 who shot 45% from 3.
Right and he was 20-21 most improved player of the year for a reason. His first few seasons with LA sucked. I don’t know why we’re even counting those years. Meanwhile the same people here are arguing we should trade for Jarret Allen?? A guy who does not space the floor AT ALL? Are you freaking kidding me? lmfao
I’m not arguing for either Randle or Allen.
Huh? The only one who brought up Jarret Allen is you…just now.
Oh, do we get to order our season stats ala carte?
Absolutely a better trade than BARNES and an even worse pick for Jarret Allen who will obviously be a better fit, right? Wow.
Hey everyone, lets trade Barnes, our only decent SF, get rid of what 3 point shooting this team is lacking and replace it with Allen who doesn’t shoot 3’s, doesn’t pass, doesn’t space the floor. Yeah, great move according to the 6 people on these boards in this Kings Herald community. Everyone else is a moron if they think otherwise.
Randle and Sabonis are a horrible fit.
A core of Fox, Randle and Sabonis is going nowhere.
Why is it a horrible fit?
Picked Jovic. Going for potential here and Jovic provides it on the offensive, a potential Domas replacement down the line should things not work out.
Here’s the SI second round projections. Note Koloko which I think would be great for the Kings.
