Timberwolves 110, Kings 98: Rudy Gobert is the Grinch who stole Christmas

Minnesota got big games from stars Gobert and Anthony Edwards while Sacramento fought hard but ultimately came up short once again on night two of a back to back.

SACRAMENTO – The league’s most efficient defense faced off with one of its best offenses Saturday night, and it was no contest as far as which won the battle.

Sure, the Kings were without reigning 6th Man of the Year Malik Monk, but the Timberwolves were missing Karl Anthony Towns. And yes, it was the dreaded “second night of a back to back”, but at some point, if you want to be considered among the league’s best teams, you have to find a way to win these types of games.

Sacramento could not find a way Saturday night, falling at home to the Timberwolves by a final of 110-98.

It shouldn’t be all doom and gloom amongst Kings fans, as they saw their team go 4-2 over the pre-holiday home stand, with impressive wins over the Thunder and Suns. But it was another double-digit loss, as eight of their ten have been this season, and the concerns are legitimate. And  although they were more competitive than they have been in these scenarios this season, it wasn’t good enough.

“You want to keep the game close throughout, not just try to fight back in the fourth quarter,” De’Aaron Fox said. “We have to be better throughout the course of the game.”

Much has been made of the bench and the desire (need?) to upgrade it; the last two games show just how critical that may end up being. In Friday’s convincing win over the Phoenix Suns, the Kings’ bench managed just 16 points; a day later – and without Monk – the production was still lacking despite Trey Lyles scoring 10, nine of which came in the final frame.

“Missing [Monk] definitely was a factor,” Brown said. He’s a guy that makes the game easier for his teammates. We took good shots that just didn’t go in. They’re long, they’re athletic, and they fly around. There’s a little bit more pressure to get that shot off quickly.”

Truly, anyone not named Fox struggled for Sacramento most of Saturday night. Though Keegan Murray had some nice moments, finishing with 20 points after getting hot in the fourth quarter, Fox carried with 27/6/4. Sabonis finished with another triple-double, his second in two games, with 17/10/10, in one of those games that fans tend to take for granted. But the interior presence of Rudy Gobert was felt by Kings players, as Fox noted post game.

“Having Rudy back there makes you think twice going to the rim,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves got pretty much whatever they wanted offensively, scoring 28 fast break points to the Kings’ 5, dominating the paint to the tune of 66 points – 44 of which came in the first half – and running the style of offense that the home team is used to, assisting on 31 of their 44 made baskets.

“I thought early in the game we didn’t do a good enough job shrinking the floor,” Brown said. “This is a team, you’ve really got to play the percentages. When you have a guy, 7-foot-2 that’s a multi-time All Star, you’ve got to pay attention to him, get to him early.” Brown did note that the team did a much better job in the second half defensively, but wanted them to be more physical with Gobert in the pick and roll game. “We could have been there sooner when Rudy was rolling, but besides that our physicality was at an okay level. And for the most part I thought our effort was good. In previous back-to-backs I didn’t think we did a good job in that area.”

It was an ugly game from the start but one that the Kings made interesting at least at the finish.

Sacramento managed just 20 first quarter points and did not connect on a three pointer until Fox hit on a step back 50 seconds into the second quarter. They would finish 8-33 from deep on the night, well below their usual success rate from behind the arc. Fox scored Sacramento’s first 10 points of the second quarter, and it took over five minutes for another King to score, when Kevin Huerter found a cutting Sabonis for a two-handed dunk. The Timberwolves would stretch their lead to as many as 20 in the third quarter, but the Kings would not roll over and die, going on an 8-0 run over the final 1:41 of the third to get within 11.

“I thought our guys did try and bring it tonight,” Brown said of his team’s effort. “The areas that we can control, I thought we tried to control them. I thought our communication was good, I thought at times our physicality was better.”

But Gobert came out firing in the fourth, converting an offensive rebound into two points and connecting on an alley-oop from Mike Conley to stretch the lead back to 15 quickly. It would grow to 20 from there before a late flurry sparked by Murray got Sacramento back within five with 2 minutes to play. Back to back turnovers would turn into a very quick 10 points for the Timberwolves and put the nail in the coffin of Sacramento’s 11th loss of the season.

Anthony Edwards starred for Minnesota, scoring 35 points with 10 assists. Gobert was a force, going for 27/11. All five Timberwolves starters finished in double-digits with Jaden McDaniels making it three players with 20+ for Minnesota on the night.

But it’s what McDaniels did on the defensive end that had Brown talking postgame.

“He’s a special defender. He does a lot of things that don’t show up on the stat sheet. Defensively, his impact is a lot higher than what may show in the stat sheet.”

Ultimately, the Kings fall to 17-11 on the season and 0-3 on the second night of a back to back. Though it’s not time to sound the alarms, Brown did make mention of a weakness of his team that Minnesota was able to exploit, and how they might address it.

“You always look for length,” Brown said. “You look – especially at the current NBA Champions – you want to mimic that. The current Champions, it’s a long team. Maybe there’s something to it. But you build your team the best you can the way you play, but it’s not anything that you go consciously go bring a guy just to be bigger, they have to fit, they have to be able to play the way you want to.”

Sacramento will hit the road after the holiday to take on Portland Tuesday. That game is followed with trips to Atlanta and Memphis before the Kings return home for a date with Charlotte on January 2nd.

Yeah, he provides nothing the Kings don’t already have, especially at his contract and what it would cost the Kings to get him.

The Kings don’t need another high usage star, they need a reliable glue guy who fills his role as an end to end player that doesn’t need touches.

Actually, he’s a worse version of Monk, but don’t take my word for it. HERE are the numbers.

Simply put, if you want a better and far cheaper version of LaVine, just give Monk 35 minutes per game.

So did you forget about Huerter or deliberately avoided mentioning him?

At what point are his issues more than a slump? Teams are game planning to limit the DHO and it seems that neither Brown nor Huerter are good at adjusting to it.

I know I keep banging on Heurter but he needs to be upgraded. He NEVER steps up when needed. With Monk out Heurter needs to pick up the O but he doesn’t.

He’s not good very often on O and his D stinks, so what’s the point in having him on this team? He’s not starter materiel. Time to move on.

Maybe if this was a team with defenders at every position you could get away with Heurter.

Monte is gonna have to make some
moves.

I agree. We are one third into the season and Huerter hasn,t stepped up yet. How long will this go on? Barnes is starting to score more but like the other night he scored 19 but had no rebounds and no assists. I’ve been watching him lately and he can not keep up with our pace. Always behind especially later in the game. Some people say we had tired legs.if so then we better get in better shape. We used to play in as many tournaments I could get us in .Many times we played 3 and sometimes 4 games in as many nights so 2 games in 2 nights even in the NBA isn’t that much if you are an NBA player. IMO it’s more mental. Sabonis scored a triple double last night but Gobert kicked his behind. Edwards is a really good player especially at 22. How mant times last night did we let him get to the rim. Too many,Something has to change or we are in trouble. Enough said.

Huerter had some open looks but did not appear focused. The segababa might have had something to do with it.

I still like his fit in the starting 5 this year with Monk closing. Definitely could upgrade for a better defender, but probably not midseason.

Losing the second of b2b sucks, but on reflection, I don’t think it’s indicative of playoff success. In the playoffs we’ll be on equal rest.

What I do think is that the team is more focused on defense and being in the top half of the league is respectable, but we’re getting tired pushing that hard. I think our losses show that we struggle against elite length and lack someone to stop guys likeBrandon Ingram, Jaylin Brown/Jason Tatum, ANT and Kwahi. We also struggle against elite defense, particularly on the interior. Welcome to most of the league. I think we likely struggle to make a WCF this year and struggle to leave the first round if we get a bad match. We’re on the brink of being serious contenders, but not all the way there.

The question is if we can continue to grow and mesh or who Monte thinks can push the team further. But I think we’re close. I think the team is as good as last year without trying to be full throttle all the time so we have more in the tank come May.

I don’t think we are going to get much more out of this team as constituted. Gonna have to find a 3/4-defender who can shoot.

Right now I don’t see this team being any better in the playoffs than last year. Or at least, certainly not a true contender.

But they are close/have a base necessary to be contenders. (I think). Just need a couple guys. Probably need Sabonis shooting and making midrange too.

I don’t know where you get your info. But the Kings are not in the top half of the league in defense.
Maybe you’re just looking at ppg allowed.

Because they are not in the top half in the league at all. Not sure what you’re looking at.

Head Coach Mike Brown’s squad is currently allowing opponents to shoot 68.3% at the rim (26th), 45.2% in the midrange (24th), and 39.8% from deep (28th). The Kings also have the 26th ranked half-court defense in the league at 103.7.

I look at 6’9-6’11” PF types and thought that Trey Lyles filled that role.

That doesn’t seem to be as much the case as I had hoped, this season.

It wasn’t just a “size matters”’issue this evening; It was missed shots, missed assignments, missed opportunities.

Overall defensive presence can be more than a Naz Reid or a Tari Eason. It can be a Marcus Smart or a Josh Okogie.

The team is 29 games into the 82 and still 4th in the WC.

Time to figure out what leaks need patching and how to keep wind in the sails.

Next.

I liked the lineup of Fox, Murray, Barnes, Lyles, Sabonis to close out the game. The effort was there, and it matched Minnesota size well.

Can Keegan just play the “SG” position and kick Huerter to the bench? Lyles or Sasha could play the “PF” position. Let Huerter come off the bench for a bit.

All told, not a bad effort against the team with the best record in the league. Particularly one with the kind of length and physicality that bothers the Kings, especially on a SEGABABA.

Not having Monk may have been the difference between a win and a loss, as the offense had no one to initiate with Fox sitting. Keon needs to play off ball, period. Quite glaring that in this case Davion couldn’t even get a look running the O.

Good to see Colby, tho, even if it was only 2 minutes. His defensive versatility, IQ, rebounding, ability to move the ball, and knock down shots in the flow of the offense should make him a valuable piece down the stretch of the season. I suspect he takes Duarte’s spot minutes soon, and will probably prove a more well rounded option than Keon by playoff time.

I got frustrated with Fox at the end. Keegan was feeling it and they stopped giving him the ball. Fox was off after it seemed he tweaked his leg. I know it’s his roll to finish games, but you also need to recognize who’s hot at the time.

KH for Isaac makes a lot of sense for both sides and the salaries are almost identical.
KH theoretically provides shooting for ORL which they desperately need and Isaac gives us a 4 that fits next to Domas.

Agreed, and I think Monte has been doing that. He kicked the tires on Kessler, then Durate, and now JTA. He’s trying to find that guy, but hasn’t been successful yet. There is still time and I’m totally comfortable with him making that decision.

The good thing is there is no long term money dedicated to a poor investment, and I don’t consider the Barnes extension a poor investment. He still has value and iI fully believe he’ll either come around or someone will come knocking for a very solid vet off their bench. There are no bad contracts on the Kings right now.
