Kings’ big three powers them past the Wizards 143-131

Sacramento ran their win streak to three in defeating the Wizards, but the toughest tests of the home stand lie ahead.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Live by the three, die by the three.

The Kings have done a lot of living behind the arc the past two seasons, and their shooting prowess has paid dividends more often than not. But on a night where not was reigning, it was good to see Sacramento get it done by dominating the paint against a Washington Wizards team that has looked pretty allergic to defense for most of 2023.

Sacramento started just 4-17 from behind the arc, a clear departure from Saturday’s Keegan Murray-led firestorm, as most of the lineup failed to find their mark from deep. But instead of trying to shoot their way out of it, the Kings went a different direction, choosing to attack the paint and dominate inside.

Despite Mike Brown electing to play more small ball, with Trey Lyles playing the 5 when Domantas Sabonis was on the bench, the Kings got whatever they wanted in the painted area against a Wizards team that had little interest in stopping them. Sacramento finished with 64 points in the paint, and led by as many as 26 before ultimately beating the Wizards 143-131.

“Coach always says we can’t fall in love with the three,” Sabonis said. “It’s not always going to go in. To come out and have the guards really attack the paint, have people help, make the right read, pass, get everyone involved… we had 35 assists tonight. Once the ball is moving like that, it’s tough for teams to stop us.

Saturday, it was an explosive third quarter that made the difference against the Jazz; Monday the Kings came out of the first quarter break on a mission, exploding for 39 points — 37 of which came from the combo of De’Aaron Fox (15 points), Sabonis (14 points), and Murray (8 points). After leading by five through one, the Wizards found themselves down 10 at the half, despite Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma combing for 26 points through the first 24 minutes of play.

In the third quarter, they turned the heat up even further, dropping 46 and putting the game out of reach as their lead grew to as many as 26.

Sabonis, who has flirted with triple-doubles over the last several games, finally got over the hump Monday, putting together a final line of 30 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists. Fox wanted to remind people that what he’s doing isn’t normal.

“Everything he does for us, I mean, grab a rebound and push it, or we are able to outlet to him, there aren’t many people that have been able to do that at that size,” Fox said. “He’s such a focal point of our offense, there are just so many things that he does for us. There’s just so much that he does on the court that I feel like doesn’t get appreciated enough.”

Recee Fox, De’Aaron’s wife, agreed, tweeting during the game “Although Sabby does this on a nightly basis I hope we never take it for granted. I know national media doesn’t get it but we can continue to recognize he’s special.”

Mike Brown was asked about a star player’s wife tweeting about another star player, and what that says about the culture of his team.

“This group is connected. Everybody wants everybody to have success. When you see stuff like that, you read stuff like that, it’s awesome. It’s not something that you hear a lot of see a lot around the NBA because of the money, the prestige, and the accolades.”

Fox also discussed how much the locker room enjoys celebrating each other and seeing a different player rise to the occasion on any given night.

“With this team, everybody loves seeing everybody [succeed]. Keegan had his game and everybody was happy for him. Whenever I’m playing well, everybody is happy for me. That’s just the way everybody in this locker room is. When you enjoy playing with each other, it makes basketball more fun and makes you a better team.”

All five starters were in double-figures, with Harrison Barnes breaking out for 19 on 8-11 shooting and Kevin Huerter adding 11. Malik Monk also crested the double-digit mark with 10 and Sasha Vezenkov added eight points and a career-high seven rebounds off the bench. It was a struggle for the rest of the reserves though, as the other seven players that recorded PT managed just 12 points on 5-17 shooting.

The Wizards were led by Poole’s 28 and Kuzma’s 27, though both cooled off considerably after the first quarter. Washington shot nearly 49% from behind the arc, connecting on 18-37 attempts, but it wasn’t enough on a night when the Kings played the right way and collected 35 assists on 53 made field goals.

Playing better at home has been a focal point for Sacramento this season, and it appears they’re delivering on that promise. Monday’s win was the team’s fourth straight at the Golden 1 Center, but the toughest challenges of the home stretch are still to come.

“We’re doing good,” Brown said. “I think we have the best fans in the NBA and guys should be excited to play in this building. They should get energy from the fans. We have to take advantage of it when we are here.”

“A big thing was JaVale [McGee] talking about being able to protect home court,” Fox said. “I feel like we have done a pretty good job of that. I think this next three game stretch is extremely important for us and we have to prove that we can win at home, especially against these teams that are about to come in here.

It’s important because come playoff time, if you’re able to win at home – especially if you’re the team that has home court advantage – that’s a big plus that you have. We were really good on the road last year so we want to continue that, but being a better team at home makes us a better team overall.”

Another aspect to being a better team overall is the ability to close out wins when you have a big lead, something that Sacramento struggled with.

Brown was happy with the win postgame but disappointed in the final few minutes, challenging his bench to step it up on the defensive end.

“It’s something that you hope that we can learn to do,” Brown said. “Our guys heard it from me, we will watch much film. I thought that the last group that was on the floor, they didn’t do a good job on the defensive end. The thing I keep telling the team is that’s how Keon [Ellis] got in the rotation. Keon went out and played his behind off when we played at Houston in “insignificant minutes”. He played the right way and he played hard, so he got another opportunity.”

It’s always good to learn in a win, and there was much to learn Monday night. But ultimately, Sacramento comes out with a third straight win and a ton of confidence in their stars.

With a stretch featuring Boston, Phoenix, and Minnesota ahead on the home stand, they’ll need to keep playing at a high level if they want to continue to establish themselves as one of the elite teams in the NBA.

They certainly believe they can do just that.

“When we have multiple guys playing at a high level in the same game hard to beat us,” Fox said.

That was the case Monday, and the Kings hope it carries over to Wednesday night when the Celtics come to town.

Spectacular recap, thank you Melissa.

Saboinis, despite his all-star status, let alone his all-nab status, is still remarkably underrated. His motor, skill level, and non-stop motor are something to behold on a game by game basis. It is a short list of players in the NBA that can genuinely make every teammate better.

Fox might be a top ten player in the NBA. Definitely top fifteen, and I am not sure we are at his ceiling.

KEEGAN MURRAY. He is why I hope that Monte and his team slow roll roster changes. We don’t even know what he is yet. He might be Paul George 2.0 and that affects roster composition over the next few years. I agree with multiple posters about windows opening and closing quickly, but as a avid and even rabid NBA fan since 1979, I appreciate the long game strategy like the Nuggets have employed versus the all-in move a year or two early like Cleveland. If he is a 20pt scorer the rest of the year the Kings trajectory changes.

Monk might be this squads Manu as I have said for weeks and that should not be undersestimated. Any roster moves that inhibit the team being able to pay him market value is short sighted and dangerous.

16-9 despite the road blocks of Fox and Lyles missing time, Keegans long range shot being off, and inconsistent play of K-Von and HB, and the lurking Sasha as being a serious impact player, has my purple tinted glasses shining. 50 wins, a deep playoff run, and assets to improve the roster this summer has my expectations as sky high as I can remember for this team.

I should add, with all of the trade speculation, that I hope Monte and his staff take a measured approach. The cost of trading for the obvious fits of Siakam or OG, in addition to the cost of re-signing them, or the need for a “third star” like Levine (who I do like for this team), wreaks of ATL and overpaying for Murray, or Cleveland going all in on Mitchell despite the sketchy fit. I want Monte to field a team that can compete for a decade, not just next season. I hope he is patient and thoughtful.

i think Sasha is improving to the point IMO should get more minutes. It’s hard to do things when you go in for a few minutes then come out. He needs to play enough to get in his grove. He can shoot the 3 but I am also impressed with his defense and especially his rebounding. He has a really high IQ and knows how to use it.

Agreed Jack. He does so many smart things on the court, I am really optimistic about how much he will be able to contribute as the season goes on.

Sasha has the 3rd highest TRB% of players that have played over 200 minutes, behind only Domas and Lyles. He just finds ways to help the team win.

I feel this is something that needs to be examined more:

Any roster moves that inhibit the team being able to pay him market value is short sighted and dangerous.

The Kings are unfortunately limited on how much they can pay to keep Monk due to his Early Bird Rights, which is going to come down to 175% of his current salary. If anyone in free agency offers more that $17.5M to him next summer, the Kings can’t match. The good news, is any roster moves made between now and the deadline really don’t effect the Kings paying him next summer…as long as he comes under that $17.5M per year. They can go over the cap to re-sign him.

Monk is in that same situation that Holmes was for the Kings a few years ago. When you have a guy on a 2 year deal there are limitations on how you can retain that player.

What worries me is that recent 6th man of the year winners (Clarkson, Herro, Brogdon), which Monk is definitely in contention for, are all making over $20M per year.

Here is hoping that playing with the Fox and in the Kings system will appeal more to him than a few extra million.

Is there any chance that a contract could be structured, a la Ohtani’s in baseball, to defer some payment and thus dodge the $17.5M limit (stupid example: $17.5M/yr for 30 years)? Question asked in complete ignorance.

I don’t believe so. Not 100% sure, but I think the last CBA got rid of those kind of deals when a team would front load a contract to keep a Bird Rights owning team from matching. I remember Omer Asik signed some kind of poison pill contract with the Rockets back in the day to keep the Bulls from matching.

Of course my example is the opposite—backloading the contract so that eventually the player gets more. One may be a contract violation, the other not. But I have no idea.

I am hoping Monk loves being part of a “core four” and feels bonded with the fans. If they were to do something cute with the idea of resigning him at full value (such as what Harden and PHI tried to do), I wonder if Monk would want to be able to be a starter as well.

Couldn’t the Kings offer a two year deal at $17.5M with a player option in the second year? That way it’s one year at a slightly reduced rate then he can opt out with full Bird Rights and get paid while staying in a good situation.

What a really well written game story, with some fantastic post-game quotes. Much better than the articles I read in the Bee. Anyway, what a fun game to watch and the team is just full such great characters and good guys. Similar to the 49ers team this season. So easy easy to root for these guys and some big games up, so they’ll be tested. Celtics are probably the biggest challenge but can’t wait to see how they match up.

A win is a win is a win, but man…this team can’t give up 131 points, while allowing 51% from the field and 47% from three. The Wiz stink and the Kings got away with it, but they won’t with the majority of the league. As impressive as the Kings were in the second half, they only outscored the Wiz by 2 and gave up 75 points.

The defense has to get better if this team is to become relevant.

Not to mention letting Washington go on an 11-0 run in the last few minutes of the game and chopping the lead down to like 9 or 10 points. I know that by that time the game was pretty much over, but did anyone else get a funny feeling when that happened?

I realize throwing 5 bench players in all at once will change the outcome of the game but it also shows our bench players better start understanding their role or they might be on another team. Realy disappointed.

Agreed but I put it almost entirely on the bench unit. They got cooked as soon as they came in and made the score look much closer than it should have been. Coach Brown put the starters back in a couple times and then almost had to do it again in the last two minutes. Just terrible effort from the bench guys.

There seems to be a chasm between The Core: starters: Domas, Fox, Keegan, HB and Huerter “First” bench: Monk, Lyles, Sasha, Keon Ellis and the rest of the squad. In some weird twist – Davion went from 1st backcourt to 5th. Duarte turned into Chima Moneke.

If there is a fault for this Kings coaching staff – it is the development of that second and third unit.

Kessler Edwards came in last season and looked so darn promising. That promise is fading. If Davion could just get some points… it is disappointing to say; but he needs to run the offense and keep the defense honest, he needs to make chaos on D (I have Jorge Alvarado in my head, forget Kyle Lowry) – he is just not producing, he appears to be regressing.
Duarte? A gamble that has yet to pay dividends. (Sasha is the gamble that paid off as has Keon).

They (coaches) realize it – that’s why JTA was signed up. Alex Len and JaVale McGee are a separate matter.

Let’s hope that Stockton (Colby Jones, Jordan Ford, etc.) and Kessler and Davion can start to show they are going to be in the League in two seasons.

Team really needed Duarte to step up and contribute. Hoping he would have been the answer at the backup 2/3. Really would have made this team more dangerous and versatile. Much of the trade speculation would not be happening if he was playing well.

16-9 with the starting five only being intact for 15 of those games, with the longest streak of them all starting being 8 games (and counting). I’ll take it, happily.

Monk’s assist percentage hovered between 14-17% before coming to Sac. He was at 25.5% last year and is at 29.9% this year. He is on a par this year with Fox (30.9%) and Sabonis (30.4%). This is the secret sauce to Monk’s game. For all of the scoring highlights, his ability to feed bench pieces, as well as give the team an additional attack point when he plays with Fox and Sabonis, is an absolutely monstrous addition. Pay the man next year. Pay the man.

I enjoyed post up Keegan last night. We’re seeing more and more each game.

If you look at Sabonis, Fox and Murray as being the core three (add Monk if you want to go to core four), it may be fair to say that this group has yet to near its peak. Fox continues to add to his game, Monk continues to grow his game, Sabonis has added a 3 ball and is even more energetic defensively, and can anyone even assess a ceiling to Murray right now?

The defense is not fixed yet, but the baseline to baseline effort of Sabonis, Fox, and Murray is absolutely evident. A little more defensive wing help would still be nice, but I see it as a tweak to the roster and not an overhaul.

My goodness, this team can be so much fun to watch. Murray had me horse laughing two games ago (the last time I laughed like that, Klay Thompson was having an unconscious 3rd quarter against us), and the five minute run in the 3rd quarter last night where it was nothing but interior buckets was awesome (even when considering the “opponent”).

Go Kings!

I totally agree. Fox and Sabonis is who they are, Monk is the catalyst off the bench and Murray is really expanding his game mainly attacking the basket, rebounding and playing defense. We need these guys. Another player I see as potential starting is Sasha Vezenkov. IMO he needs to play more minutes. He isn’t that bad on defense, shoots the 3 and can rebound. Look what he did last night pulling down rebounds in a short period on the court. He also has a very high IQ.

Well said Rob. “Internal growth” was tossed around as almost a pejorative by a few writers this off season, but as you point out, even the two all-nba players on the squad have squeezed more juice out of their game.

I am with you on what Murray’s ceiling could be, as he keeps showing more and more. With his touch, smarts, and athleticism, he really could be one of the best at his position. I keep using Alex English as a comp, this year being Keegan’s version of English’s year in Indiana, where he flexed his all around game then went to Denver and became a scoring champion. When you see Keegan be able not just shoot from three in every way (in motion, catch and shoot, jab and create his own space), and his ability to get to the rim, the turnaround jumper he flexed last night, the floater, the step back, his ability to cut, etc. I feel like he is going to be a big time scorer in this league.

I’ve seen flashes of PG13 in Murray, but the guy that I am beginning to see more and more is Khris Middleton. Middleton is such a solid contributor and a Robin among Robins, but he also takes on the mantel of Batman when Giannis is not available. And Middleton is a true baseline to baseline player, as well as a guy that has guarded 1 through 4.

The thing that may be beyond compare is when you add Murray’s 3 ball to the rest of the package. That is some next level stuff.

I still go back to a Danny Granger comp. Last year I had him pegged as a Rashard Lewis type player, but with his improvement on defense I’ve shifted to more of a two way guy like Granger. Middleton is another fine one. I’d happily settle with any of those type of guys.

I am not sure I have ever seen a team be so completely, unreasonably, ridiculously hot on 3 pointers as the Wizards were yesterday and still manage to lose badly. That roster is just terrible – I’d rather be the Pistons.

Good on the Kings for not getting rattled by the barrage and sticking to their game rather than just taking wild 3s to try and match every make.

I’d have to agree with your assessment of the Wizards as bereft of direction. It’s a very Kangzian look. Detroit is trying to cobble together youth – draft picks of their own and trying to patch “busts” of others. They’ve hired a good coach in Monty Williams and yet they are tragically, historically bad. I’d be amazed if their GM is around beyond mid-April. But at least it is a direction. Build with youth. With OKC and Utah holding so many picks, there aren’t a ton to go around – but it’s something.

The Wizards though- Poole, Kuzma are trying to keep their numbers up: they are capable and they are both being handsomely rewarded for a reason. They are doing what they do. What else do they have? Memories of Zach Randolph, George Hill on the older side/ Ben McLemore, Willie Cauley-Stein, Nick Stauskas on the draft side and the look would be too close to what we Kangz fans experienced not so long ago. And now they are looking at a location move; Northern Virginia (remember Virginia Beach?).

Oy vey.

I’d prefer him over LaVine for fit, but I’m not sold on his defense and attitude. He’d also have to take a far back seat in his usage while sharing the floor with guys like Sabonis, Fox and Keegan. If he could become a glue guy like Aaron Gordon is for Denver then I might be down.

I had read, and I can’t remember if it was Marc Spears or not, that Kuzma really wanted to be in a featured role, and a number one/two option on offense. I am not sure how many teams that would work for, he might really like being a Wizard.

Got himself a double-double. Good for him. It never made any sense to me to let him go.

Celtics about to lose to a Warriors comeback in OT. They all look tired, let’s kick their asses tomorrow!
