Kings vs. Rockets Preview: One More For The Road

The Kings are in Houston, again, to end their long road trip on a high note.
By | 23 Comments | Feb 8, 2023

After suffering back-to-back losses against the Pacers and Pelicans in De’Aaron Fox’s absence, Sacramento’s most prolific scorer returned to the court for the Kings vs. the Rockets on Monday night and the result was a 20-point blowout win.

With Fox back and the Kings at full strength, the Beam Team returns to Houston tonight for another matchup against the Rockets in a game they both need to and should win.

When: Wednesday, February 8th, 5:00 PM PT
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, TX
TV: NBC Sports California
Radio: Sactown Sports 1140

For Your Consideration

I’m not going to waste a ton of time talking about the Rockets here. Will did enough of that in is his preview for Monday’s game. But one element worth noting is the Kangz-esque quote Rockets Head Coach Stephan Silas gave after the Kings crushed the Rockets earlier this week:

“It’s just a pride type of thing. They can’t come to our house and do whatever they want and score 140 points and just be so comfortable. It’s our job to make it tough on them, play with a lot more energy. Houston deserves that.”

This sounds exactly like something Alvin Gentry said on multiple occasions last season. Will the Rockets respond to Silas’ callout? Possibly. Houston’s energy should be better tonight, and it would be disappointing to see the Kings take them lightly.

For the Kings, this is all about winning games you should win in an extremely tight Western Conference playoff race. Only 4.5 games separate the 3rd seed Kings and the 11th seed Oklahoma City Thunder. Nobody wants to talk about it, but there is plenty of time for this to go south. I have faith, but the Kings need to win these games.

The NBA trade deadline is also looming (Thursday, February 9, 3 p.m. ET). Pre-deadline stress on players is real. One would think the Rockets are feeling that more than the Kings considering where they sit in the standings, but Sacramento has been in enough trade rumors at this point that some players have to be refreshing Woj’s twitter feed more than others.

Stay focused, win a game you should win, and end this 7-game road trip with a respectable 4-3 record. That’s it.

Prediction:

Kings 125, Rockets 111.

Need a win to finish this trip.
Hope our shooting woes were just a blip.
Offense—back alive;
Defense—we must strive.
Can’t afford a long lasting dip!

If a scoring record falls in an arena and no one sees it with their own eyes, do the phone cameras make a sound….or something like that.

pays $5K sit close to the court only to watch the play on a 4 inch screen.

That’s sad. It’s what concerts look like now. Took my daughters to see King Gizz at the Greek a few months back and I forbid them to film. Memories are worth more than some shaky image that’s totally unlistenable.

I was just thinking of this today! I’m wondering if my memory isn’t as strong as it used to be, because I don’t exercise it as much since I spend more time scrolling through photos on my app, rather than scrolling through my memories in my brain. I used to spend lots of time daydreaming of past memories.

Anyway, I hope your daughters appreciate your advice and understand the lesson. I agree with you.

Remember how you had to say to your friends:

“Ok, if we get separated during the concert, meet back at the car after the show.”

Of course it’s better to have a phone for the safety of your family nowadays, but I miss those times.

(…proceeds to search on phone for photo of old photos from the 80’s/90’s when I didn’t have a phone. {sighs})

I believe there is some science to this. Simply watching an event without any tech distraction cements the memory far more than holding up a phone and trying to catch it to watch it later.

It’s depressing to see how many faces are looking at LBJ’s shot through their phone as opposed to just taking it all in.

Yeah, I remember my some of my teachers in Architecture school advising us to NOT take photos, and instead sketch buildings we were visiting on trips. Or even just walk around and touch the bricks with your fingers, smell things, listen to the sounds of the environment, etc.

They wanted us to engage our senses more with the experience, whereas often if you take a photo you may just spend a few seconds seeing the composition, and that’s it.

I’m guessing the fans with their phones taking images of the LeBron moment are mostly doing it to share on social media to say “I was there”.

Yeah I checked out the setlist. Three hours of so many different genres and styles. So cool. And I love the Greek. Such a beautiful venue. The only show I’ve seen there was My Morning Jacket but it was fantastic. MMJ is playing two nights in a row with Fleet Foxes in August. Gonna go to that. Also Death Cab and Postal Service three nights in a row there. Some really good shows coming up!

Hopefully this year’s déjà vu double-ups don’t extend into next season!

Trey Lyles out early just draining 3 point shots from all around the perimeter. Really enjoy watching him on this team.

No skeleton suit, have a black “KINGS” baseball cap on tonight behind the Kings bench about 12 rows or so. Was pretty close court side last game.

Blast out to a nice lead and coast home. Of course, you want that every game. 4-3 is OK. 5-2 would’ve been so much better.

“Hey kids, we’re going to see King Gizz!”

“Daddy, what is jizz?”

“Oh, hmmm. Hey kids, we’re going to see Dave Chapelle!”

For the last few years, I’d see videos online of children between the ages of 8-16 playing basketball that would constantly be beating their chests, only wanted to shoot 3s, and were more interested in ISO’ing their defender than making the right play.

And it’s just now struck me that some of those kids may grow up to be NBA players. And I suspect Jalen Green was one of those kids, and it seems to be thematic of this generation of hoopers.

Are we witnessing the dawn of the “Highlight Era” of the NBA? What happens when the old guard of Steph, Bron, Kawhi, KD, CP3, etc. finally retire? Will we witness a new kind of basketball altogether? For better or worse?

Unquestionably a foul. Gordon has been around way too long to be doing stuff like that.
