Thanks for answering my question guys!
I’m in agreement. Fox and Keon in the backcourt, DeRozan and Keegan on the wings and Sabonis at the 5. The Kings really need to have their two best perimeter defenders on the court as much as possible because they lack real rim protection. Defense begins at the POA so stake your claim there with Keon and Keegan. I really feel that with two defenders like Keegan and Keon, to go along with the league leader in steals in Fox, you can hang your hat there and still be a top 10 defensive team in the league despite no rim protection.
I also agree that DeRozan isn’t really an off guard anymore and I do like the idea of him guarding the slower of foot opponent on the wing. Put Keegan on other team’s best offensive 3/4 and preserve DeRozan’s energy for the offensive side of the floor.
This roster still appears to be incomplete as it stands today. Are there more FA that we will look to sign? Things are awful quiet lately.
The fact that Jerry and I make popcorn the same way, and demand to make it that way, gives me immense happiness.
Not to butter him up, but I bet Jerry’s favorite ABA team was the Kentucky kernals.
My concern about adding in someone like a starter-quality PF is, who goes to the bench? I agree on the starting five Adamsite and Jerry agree on, but let’s say we add someone like John Collins. Is he taking Keegan’s time or time from Ellis with DDR moving to the 2? No matter what your starting lineup is, it likely creates playing time issues for Keegan, Ellis, Monk, Huerter, and Lyles. I agree there is an awkwardness to the lineup as proposed, but don’t know how to square the circle on putting the best five players on the court. Certainly if Huerter and Lyles are used to attract a starting-quality PF that allows more playing time to go around, but it does cut minutes from some of the core 8-9 players.
Agree 100% about who should start, to the degree that I would really question Mike Brown’s judgment should he do otherwise. If the knock on Ellis is about his offense, and given his shooting proficiency, the only real issue about his offense is that he doesn’t take nearly enough shots. He doesn’t need twenty attempts per game, but last season he averaged fewer than five, so there’s a very fat space to find the happy medium.
It was interesting when you spoke about the Olympics, specifically 3 on 3 and the upcoming addition of flag football. Jerry made a good point about there being a decent chance that few countries will participate, but as far as the Americans dominating?
Maybe, and even probably. But I’d point you back to the 3×3 hoops. Basketball is our game, and the rest of the world has caught up in many ways with traditional basketball. The assumption that this dominance should translate to the half-court version is reasonable enough, but we’ve seen that it hasn’t. It’s a different game from the one we dominate.
And so is flag football.
I would imagine that the best American players aren’t going to risk injury pursuing a gold medal in a watered-down version of the game that has made them multi-millionaires. The US certainly has more kids who have played regular football than any other country (although fewer and fewer each year), and it’s probable that right now, a dozen guys from the Big Ten would have enough talent to emerge victorious. But if the game sticks, that could change in much the same way as the NBA has since the rest of the world became fascinated by Naismith’s game.
That said, I don’t really give a shit about flag football. The key, however, is that a ball-carrier shouldn’t always try to juke a defender into missing. Take it from me, you can absolutely run over a guy without losing a flag, and doing so changes the way the defense plays.
usa. usa. usa.
Agree that good non NFL caliber players from SEC, Big Ten should get Gold for decades but the future always brings surprises . Also , seems Keon has a chance to be a solid 40% 3 shooter which is what they need from him . Provide good D and spacing for DeMar , DeAron, and Malik .
I do not think Keon taking shots from Derozan, Sabonis, Keegan, Monk or Fox is the idea. If they want the scoring at that position Huerter or Monk are the clearly obvious choice. Ellis exists because he can play defense. The other players will score. If Ellis decides to become a scoring player and takes too many shots his role is no longer contributing to wins.
Girls flag football far outpaces the growth of men’s flag football and tackle football combined. From what I have read the flag football in the Olympics is intended to fit that growing sport. Not NFL or over paid college players looking for a free vacation. Go watch any flag football game, men or women’s, and you will see the traditional type of football players losing to soccer players.
When I watch the women’s three on three it is somewhat entertaining. USA women’s team does much better than Jimmer and the other players hanging on. The world has not caught the USA in three on three basketball. The USA has not tried to win the three on three basketball with their best efforts. Either way it is wasted space in the Olympics.
I don’t think Ellis would be taking shots from the players you mentioned. His role would be to hit any open shots he gets within the flow. Defenses will be focusing on fox, monk, derozan and that will leave Keon open, most likely. That could lead to additional shots for him, that he hit at high percentage.
If he continues to hit those at a high rate, then defenses will either continue doubling fox, monk, ect. and leave Keon open and see if he can continue shooting well, or put someone out on him and not focus on the fox, monk etc.
Well-explained, and pretty much what I was getting at.
I remain highly amused by the notion of your best shooter taking shots away from people who are less proficient at making them is a problem. Aside from a player who’s just bad offensively, a starter taking 8-12 shots per game isn’t even slightly unreasonable. Keon Ellis is not a chucker.
Considering Ellis as the best shooter is an interesting notion. I am all for it if he can become that. Ellis is definitely not a chucker. He does play on a team that only wins when the three scorers do just that. Ellis plays defense well enough to stop a few points in case the others do not put up the high averages.
My opinion…your opinion.
I enjoyed hearing Jerry talk about the progress of the WNBA. I wish he would share those experiences and his perspectives on the WNBA more often. He was a big part of the beginning and he has seen so much more of the spectrum than most others involved now.
Thank you Jerry for your part in that game and for a glimpse at your WNBA perspective.
Bring the Monarchs back Vivek!
Now is the time. Get it before the games gets watered down.
Please stop addressing questions to Jerry in the form of, “As a former GM/coach”! You don’t need to establish his credibility to the audience and it’s a weird verbal crutch.
Simply refer to him as “your majesty”.
Did you smile when you listened?
