According to Jason Jones of The Athletic, the Sacramento Kings have waived center Chimezie Metu.
Kings have waived Chimezie Metu, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA.

In four preseason appearances for the Kings, Metu averaged 6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 7 minutes per game, but his producion wasn’t enough to earn him a roster spot over Glen Robinson III. Metu’s contract may have also played a role in the decision, as his guaranteed salary of $50,000 was scheduled to jump to $250,000 if he had been on the depth chart as of Wednesday. If Metu passes through waivers and isn’t claimed, there is an outside possibility that the Kings offer him their second two-way contract, as they have an opening next to Kyle Guy, who held his own in preseason against NBA rotational players.
With Metu now out of the picture and with the recent waiver of Frank Kaminsky, the Kings roster is full, although they do sport one available two-way slot. With two-way players now allowed to appear in up to 50 games and with no travel or practice restrictions, those spots have become even more valuable, and Sacramento may wait and see if a better prospect becomes available in the coming months.
Here’s what the depth chart looks like as of this moment:
PG: Fox/Joseph
SG: Hield/Haliburton/Ramsey/James
SF: Barnes/Robinson/Jeffries
PF: Bagley/Bjelica/Parker/Woodard
C: Holmes/Whiteside
Two-way: Guy
With the Kings starting their season on Wednesday evening, it looks as though their roster is set, at least until Monte McNair starts to make some adjustments as the trade deadline approaches in late March.
We Metu but didn’t get the chance to know you. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Guess that means we are officially tanking.
But in all seriousness, good luck, Metu! Hope you have a long successful basketball career.
No surprise. I honestly didn’t think he was going to make the final cut. Wish him the best.
Time to Bring back Jack!
He’s the Kevin Love of Japan!
Or is Kevin Love the Jack Cooley of the NBA?

This
3 like to 11…not fair! Lol
Why not give him a two-way?
I think they may be leaving that two-way spot open for a while in case of injuries or illness. They may want it to be more position specific if the need arises. It is basically an additional roster spot now that they can play up to 50 games.
This makes sense in alot of ways but I still think the real value is development. Not an extra roster spot.
But, whatever. It’s not a big deal either way really.
ð
This kinda sucks. I do hope we give him a two way contract though.
I’m with you. He shows flashes of skill and instinct that strike me as remarkable. A two-way would be great, even if he never gets NBA minutes. He definitely shows signs of being a diamond in the rough, or an emerald, at the very least, so I hope he stays and gets a ton of play in Stockton.
A tad surprised but it’s no big deal. Wonder if this is a precursor to signing Metu to a 2 way deal? And they had to waive him first?
Still, they didn’t have a roster spot open so someone was getting waived.
Yeah. Does anybody know if he has to clear waivers or something before we can sign him to a two-way? Is that a thing in this sport?
Someone needs to consult with cap guru Larry the Cable Guy. Can a team that waives a player automatically re-sign them to a two-way deal once they clear waivers? I know you waive them and then sign them to a G League contract, but that’s for players that sign exhibit 10 contracts.
Via that Larry COON feller, it’s an exhibit 1B contract. Waiving Metu was about maybe using that contract on a different player, as Adam pointed out.
yeah, at the time a lot of people reported that Metu’s contract actually included the Exhibit 10 clause (even the NBA’s own website reported it that way), but it seems pretty clear you can’t do that on contracts longer than 1 season unless I’m missing something.
I’m still confused about the ability to sign a player to a 2-way contract after waiving them though. I can’t think of a time in which a team re-signed a player after clearing waivers.
It’s happened before. Sign a player to a small guarantee, waive him, do it again until contracts are guaranteed in January in a normal season.
I don’t think the issue is that Metu can’t be signed using the 2W option. The issue is they want to see who else tickles their fancy. My hunch is it’s a big with a similar profile to Whiteside and that isn’t Metu. And I’m not going to waste my time looking at G League Bigs to figure that out.
Cory Oself! No J!!
Chevron Hield!!
I have NO idea how to spell his first name.
Oh can’t forget LOSE OFTEN!!!
Puke Walton

Alvin Simon Theordore Gentry
No one is safe today
so much for the #metu movement
Yesterday Kaminsky….and now Metu…
It had to happen some day… let’s not be sad and just remember the good moments.
The tank is set. Time to roll towards that no. 1 pick!
#TankingForTheFuture
I don’t get it…
Isn’t the FO offered him a 3-years contract before ?
So KG (Kyle Guy) didn’t exactly make the roster either. Ramsey and Woodard are on the roster full time.
Kyle Guy played too good in pre-season. It was that game winning 3…the tank will not be stopped!
I have no idea. Kyle is probably still lucky to be on a roster at this point? I hope he can crack the rotation. He seems like a good ‘Guy’, just not sure if he can.
