By all accounts, the Sacramento Kings have had a successful offseason so far, but barring a blockbuster trade, their roster will look very similar to how it looked last season. In fact, of the 17 players the Kings currently have under contract, 14 of them suited up for Sacramento last season.
While the Kings could improve organically, general manager Monte McNair is reportedly looking to acquire a star player via trade. Last month, it seemed like they had the most interest in Ben Simmons but in the last week, Pascal Siakam has emerged as a possible candidate for a blockbuster trade.
Unfortunately, “possible” remains the strongest word when it comes to reports about a star in Sacramento. According to a report from Jason Andersen of The Sacramento Bee on Monday, there’s nothing imminent between the Kings and the Toronto Raptors nor are talks expected to pick back up in the near future:
If that holds true through August, it’s reasonable to expect that what the Kings have now is what they’ll have to start the season. Given that they finished the season with 31 wins last season and the season before that, that’s probably not the scenario that most fans are hoping for, but there’s always the faint hope that this will be the year the young core takes a leap and ends Sacramento’s 15-year playoff drought.
And if they don’t, these rumors about a trade for a star player will continue throughout the season.
