Unrelated, but the Jazz / Kings lottery coin flip taking place on 4/20 is some munchies loving chef’s kiss.
The coin just keeps spinning and spinning …
If a team is fined for tanking at any point during the season, they should automatically lose any coin-flip/tie-breaker determining draft positioning.
To even allow the Jazz the opportunity to improve their draft odds even further is ridiculous.
That is the only good thing to come out of this king’s season…… and this king‘s ownership tenure
This off season may be the most important in decades and it’s difficult to be optimistic . Perry and staff need to focus on major changes instead of motivation quotes .
I can’t imagine that they’re going to do anything positive. There’s no one no this team with any significant value across the league, and more than a few large salary players with neutral to dead weight value.
The Bulls have over $60M in cap space and don’t have a center on their roster and there are’t really any quality free agents centers as well. They also have to get to the salary floor. That means they are going to have to pay someone to play the 5.
I saw a video the suggested the Bulls trade for Sabonis for some of less desirable contracts. They could eat a good chuck of his salary while sending minimal contracts out. If the Kings took on Patrick Williams bad deal and someone like Okoro, I envision a scenario where the Bulls might say yes. The Bulls would be sending out around $30M in Okoro and Williams for Sabonis’ $45M. That costs them just $15M of their $60M in cap space.
A bit of shame. Domas is one of my all-time favorite Kings for the heart and hustle he brings every second he is on the floor. We can rehash his limitations, but he led the Association in rebounding 3 years in a row and he is full on team player – not much ego to contend with there. For all the ballyhoo, he is a top ten 5 in this league, IMO.
Totally agree. He’s my favorite Kings at the moment. I’m not advocating trading him, I’m just saying there could be options out there if the Kings are looking for a full reset.
The issue, just like LaVine, is what he’s making. Under the new CBA max contracts for non-superstars are albatross. I think Sabonis makes sense for a lot of teams and definitely makes them better, but I don’t know how those teams can afford him without giving back meh contracts.
Baring some kind of miracle, I think most of us agree he’s likely not on the next Kings playoff team, which means he’s either gonna stick around until he expires or he gets traded. His max return value is anyone’s guess at this point. Maybe the best return is his expiring contact in 2028.
The Kings signed him “for a discount” as he was up a Max at the end of the Beam Team season.
He’s a wonderful team player, but a #3 option on a very good team as come playoff time, he cannot create for himself very well. I was happy when the Kings re-signed him but he hasn’t added enough on the value side, especially with the Aprons in place, to justify his $40M+/season salary. Especially in Sacramento.
And that’s the thing. I love the guy, but he’s not going to win here. There are a ton of teams I think could really use his skills. Just off the top of my head Hornets, Heat, Raps and Magic are teams that can surround him with players who defend and that would thrive off of his playmaking, screening, and rebounding skills.
He’s not a one trick pony and he definitely makes those around him better. Those teams I listed would get paid in dividends with the addition of Domas, just like the Kings got with the Beam Team. IMO, that’s what makes him far more valuable on the NBA market than LaVine.
He fits well with LA Clippers as they desperately need rebounding. He fits well with Golden State – same reason – and if Dray Dray wasn’t so cray cray, they would be a very good duo in the front court.
And then there is Toronto…
What about PHX?
I think I’d rather just keep Domas and try to trade him sometime later after he’s had a chance to try to improve his value or for teams financial situations to change (more cap space or acquiring pieces that make a trade possible, like several expirings).
Sabonis being salary dumped I think supports my contention that all of the high salary players on the Kings are neutral to dead weight value. But I would do that deal. There’s no point in paying Sabonis $45 million to win 30-something games every year, and there’s no path to this team meaningfully improving in the near term.
Not that you hold on to Sabonis due to sunk costs, but it basically trades Tyrese Haliburton for two seasons over .500 and one first round loss. Awful.
Will be interesting to see if Tyrese can come back to the same level after Achilles injury . Hope so, but few if any got back to same level .
Thanks Will, Tony and Jerry for your insights and commentary. Your banter is one of the positives that make the negatives more bearable.
And tonight we get to see some Play-In basketball!
Anyone with predictions?
Heat v. Hornets
Suns v. Blazers
I am going with the hot teams tonight (Heat, Suns), though the story of Charlotte’s rapid rise is compelling. Going to take Miami’s experience over the Bugs’ fun, run and gun.
The Phila. Flyers have moved the Eastern Conf 7 v 8 (Magic at Sixers) to tomorrow night which sorta sucks for the loser of that contest having to play the SEGABABA of the 9 v 10 winner tonight.
