Kings 122, Knicks 117: Fourth quarter Fox carries the Kings

The Kings blew a huge lead but held on for the victory.

In the first game of the Beam Team jersey era, the Sacramento Kings held on at home against the red-hot New York Knicks to snag their 39th win of the season.

Although the Kings led by as many as 21 points in the first half, the game never felt completely put away, as New York’s ability to muck the game up and grab offensive rebounds constantly gave them extra possessions and extra shots. A 27-9 run over the final minutes of the third and early fourth quarter brought the Knicks right back into the game. Down 99-96 with eight minutes to go, New York grabbed five consecutive offensive rebounds that culminated in an RJ Barrett three-pointer to tie the game, but De’Aaron Fox responded with a personal seven-point run to regain the lead and the Kings never trailed, despite several strong efforts from the Knicks.

Domantas Sabonis recorded yet another triple-double for Sacramento, putting up 24 points, 13 boards, and 10 assists, while De’Aaron Fox ended the night with 23 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals. RJ Barrett was the high man for the Knicks, scoring 25 points, Julius Randle recorded 23 points and 20 boards, and Jalen Brunson scored 19 first-half points before exiting the game with a sore foot.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
THE GOOD

Trey Lyles: As will be discussed in just a few moments, the Kings struggled mightily on the defensive glass tonight, but a key substitution by Mike Brown late in the fourth quarter helped seal the win for Sacramento. Inserting Lyles for Keegan Murray gave the Kings another true big to battle on the boards, and Trey was able to snag a couple of significant rebounds in the closing moments, as well as a key and-one to close out the Knicks. The backup big man ended the evening with 16 points and 6 boards, and his aggressiveness at the rim granted him an impressive seven free throw attempts.

Winning: It may seem a little silly to highlight that the Kings won tonight, but tonight’s match-up had some of the ugly and physical aspects of a playoff series, and Sacramento was able to overcome their weaknesses to add to their win column. Previous iterations of the Kings would have fallen apart while fighting against those huge New York runs, but Sacramento’s stars stepped up in a big way to shoulder the load in the fourth quarter, exactly as one hopes will happen in the postseason.

THE BAD

Three-point shooting: One of the beautiful aspects of Sacramento’s offense is all of the shooters surrounding the unique attacks of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, but those shooters were mostly off tonight. The Kings finished the game 10/32 (31%) from deep, including 0/3 from Harrison Barnes, 2/7 from Kevin Huerter, and 1/4 from Trey Lyles.

THE UGLY

Defensive Rebounding: GRAB A REBOUND. PLEASE. The Knicks grabbed 23 offensive rebounds tonight, a season-high for a Kings opponent, including a bonkers eight offensive rebounds for every Kings fan’s dream acquisition, Josh Hart. GRAB A REBOUND. PLEASE.

The King of Kings

De’Aaron Fox: While Domantas Sabonis could certainly be up for this award as well, De’Aaron Fox won the game for Sacramento tonight. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Kings couldn’t get a bucket, and Fox took over with 11 straight points. The soon-to-be clutch player of the year showed out once again.

won 8 out of their last 10.

Seems that many teams don’t seem to care about regular season record and just want to get to the playoffs and let their “stars” carry them to a title.

Kings are building chemistry and it shows each night.

One of the first times we’ve been up 20+ that I wasn’t even sweating the loss, knowing we’d hang on. 2022/2023 Kings are not for the faint of heart

Things must really be changing around here when I’m disappointed we didn’t win by enough points. Seriously though, the Knicks are really good and we controlled the game and while it got close I wasn’t ever really all that worried we’d lose. Just hoping Fox is alright because we’ve got Phoenix and Milwaukee coming up next. We have to get at least one of the Phoenix games or else I think they pass us. Just keep winning. One away from 40!!

Agreed F-K-&-C.

The Kings can take a punch, and I was almost excited when I saw the Knicks make a run, to see what King punched back. The Knicks are fun, it will be interesting to see what they do in the offseason, they are in good shape to improve the roster.

On another note, I miss your posts. Light them beam my friend, engage more!

The rebounding was an issue. But the issue was a combination of Knicks being an elite rebounding team, the Kings not being an elite rebounding team, and the BRICKS that were being thrown up and bouncing long. Nonetheless, Kings strengths outweighed their weaknesses and they beat a hot team tonight.

Could someone who understands basketball better than I please comment on whether the Kings’ use of zone defense also contributed to the ridiculous number of offensive rebounds the Knicks got. I noticed the Kings were using a lot more zone than I am used to seeing.

I saw a lot of Kings crashing the boards on long distance, only to have the rebound sail over their heads and end up in the Knicks hands. Long shots equal long rebounds, generally.

The long boards were the result of the Knicks throwing Bricks. Definitely makes it much harder to defensive rebound because you are forced to protect a much larger part of the floor. The Knicks offense was ugly, but they are a gritty team that finds ways to make up for it with hustle and physicality.

It does. Zone defenses dare teams to shoot from the perimeter while hopefully denying dribble penetration. The draw back is you are not manned up to make a good box out, thus you run the risk of giving up offensive rebounds. As aplumley said, the Knicks were throwing up bricks from distance that clanked of the rim for long rebounds. The Knicks where just crashing the boards through the open lanes of the zone defense as the shots went up.

It’s a trade off for zone defense. Make a bad shooting team beat you from the perimeter at the cost of offensive rebounds. We saw it to the extreme las night. Knicks were 13-50!!! from three, but got 23 offensive rebounds. The Knicks took 50 out of their 101 shots from beyond the arc!

It’s harder to find a body to block out when you’re playing zone since there is no strict man assignment. When playing man, it’s pretty clear who you are supposed to box out.

in man-to-man defense, each player blocks off his own man. In Zone have to hunt for someone to block out. Opponents slip through the seams and get offensive rebounds

Wow. Just found this from Jacob Rude at SB Nation, posted yesterday;

Because of all of that, it’s only happened a handful of times. In 2014-15, the entire Southwest Division made the playoffs and in 2005-2006, the Central Division accomplished the feat. Those are the only two occurrences in the last 35 years.

Kangz of season’s past would have lost that game especially that 5 offensive rebound sequence that ended with a Barrett 3 but not this Kings.

Kings of season’s present will gut it out and let 4th quarter Fox take over (hopefully he’s ok). This was a statement win that the Kings are contenders. Let’s keep that 2nd seed!

I don’t really have anything to say that everyone isn’t already thinking, but this team is f-u-n.

With a crack coaching staff, a bunch of smart players with premium vibes/chemistry, and a chip on their shoulders, there is a formidability to this team that is admirable.

I really think any non-premium team is going to have a difficult time beating this team four times in seven games. The Kings have so many players that can steal a quarter, steal a game.

Great game from HB tonight, he made Randle work.

Do you think Monte can re-sign Trey and bring Sasha over? Would there be a better 3-4-small-ball-5 quartet than Barnes-Keegan-Lyles-Sasha? That is dangerous.

These guys are winners. From the coaching staff to the tenth man. Winners.

Absolutely. The stats may not show it in a pronounced way, but I think Barnes is very quietly having an excellent season.

According to RAPTOR (which I’m not a fan of necessarily), Barnes is one of two Kings to have two positive marks on offense and defense. Sabonis is the other.

But yeah, Barnes impact on defense is huge. He often defends the bigger wing/PF types that Murray has no shot at guarding right now. That’s huge. Plus he occasionally goes off on offense. That’s also big.

There’s a reason why the Kings won’t trade Harrison Barnes, and it’s not because they are afraid. He’s immensely valuable to this team in ways that are big and small. The phrase ‘connector’ gets used a lot, and Harrison Barnes is absolutely the best connector piece the Kings have on their roster right now. He’s not going to be easily replaced by anyone.

I’ll start a go fund me page for the Kings to sign Trey if necessary.

What a rescue of a bad use of a number two pick to obtain Trey. He has been solid all year, lost weight to get a little quicker, heady player, always seems to snag an important rebound, gets into the pain with creative drives and can hit the 3. That And 1 very late in the 4th quarter was Caesar’s Dagger in the heart of the Knicks.

Excellent points Michael. Always good posts that make me think.

We have officially tied Dave Joerger’s 39 wins for most wins in a season in the post-Adelman era. Two wins away from a non-losing season, three wins from a winning season.

It will be fun looking back at the Nostradumbass Season Kickoff thread seeing how many wins we all predicted before the start of the season, and if there was anyone that predicted playoffs.

The first thing I thought of on that play was Cousins.

Sabonis and someone from NY were fumbling together near the floor for a loose ball, and Sabonis lost it, and the play took off away from him.

God damn it’s good to have players that don’t stand there and bitch. Sabonis chased that all the way to the rim.

Barnes poking it away from Randle with 22 seconds left and a 4 point lead was also huge. The ball fell to Lyles who made both FT’s to put the game away.

There is a lot in this little vid. Thank you Dutch. Outside of the great play by Fox reading the play and stealing the ball, look at Trey Lyles turning instantly and sprinting up court on offense.

It’s a clear glimpse into why Trey is so valuable to his teammates and the Kings and his fans. It goes to the critical question Michael Malik asked up thread if TKH members think the Kings can re-sign Trey….and Sasha.

What a great play and Vid. Thanks for post Dutch.

Could there be a possibility where Kings and Lakers meet in the WCF? Nothing will make winning the chip more satisfying than sending the Lakers & Lebron home in the WCF…. My life would be complete.

p.s I can start dreaming big about winning the finals now. I deserve it. 16 years of optimism for every Kings team to hit the floor. 17 win season? 60 win season? I sat there in front of the TV… or the radio blasting.. watching the box score… the play by plays…I don’t remember the number… but I texted it and it texted me back with the current score and time remaining…

yeah, I was that kid that thought the decibel meter before the start of the 4th quarter was real.

yeah my heart tore when I was convinced that the Kings were going to Seattle. Yeah I teared up when Grant thought he did his last broadcast in Sacramento. Yeah I was part of the Here We Stay movement.

The list goes on. But we Kings fans deserve to be excited. I always see other fans comment about how Kings players and fans react after every win like we just won the playoffs… imagine that? Craving wins so badly that we get as excited for a regular season win as other fans are for Playoff games???

Yeah, it was just a win against the Knicks on the national stage..but I’m BEAMIN.

If the Lakers make it to the WCF, I don’t think I’d want to play them, because they’d clearly have figured something out.

I mean, we would sweep them, but some of the games would be close.

This was an impressive win. NYK is a very good team. We were even blowing them out of the building until they came back, as good teams do. But we hung on for the win in a close, competitive game, as good teams do!

Remember way back when the Kings couldn’t get to 5 over .500? They are currently 13 over now. They’ve matched their most wins since forever with 17 more to go. Insane. So proud of this team for hanging on for this win against a hot team.

I watched coaches presser. He was super pissed and I love every second of it. The guy just scored yet another win and says that he´s extremely frustrated with the rebounding, that he will put pressure on Domas and Foxy to hold their teammates accountable, that this is not gonna fly.
This dude is not looking to end a playoff drought, he has bigger plans and I could not be happier with this coaching staff.

Toward the end, Van Gundy said a couple of times that the Knicks might have been able to get a lead if Brunson had been playing. And maybe that’s true. Still…

The Knicks were down twenty-one points while Brunson was playing.

Hoping Fox’s hammy is all right.

Van Gundy was so ready to slam the Kings for how bad they were on the boards last night that when they won he just really didn’t know what to say by that point. It was glorious.

That, and the repeating of Mike Brown’s taking his 2nd to last timeout to challenge that foul on Domas (I think on purpose) even though it was overturned. I looked on the PBP. The Knicks didn’t get to the line after that point. Van Gundy never made a single mention of it.

Brian Anderson is by no means an idiot or anything (he’s a Milwaukee guy for chrissake; he does Brewers games on their TV side) but they need some new narratives to talk about or something because the commentary was mostly ‘blah.’ It’s not as horrible as ESPN where all they do is talk over the action (whoever is doing the game, sadly), but it’s pretty awful.

For awhile I thought it was going well until the Kings continued to win despite their poor rebounding. That’s when SVG kinda lost the game and started going full Knicks homer for some reason I don’t quite understand.

For all you negative guys on Katie and Mark they are far better than what you saw and listened to national TV last night. On the half time show all four of those has bins couldn’t come up with anything to imply the Kings are at least good. Lastly everyone other than the Kings and you and me think because the Kings are young and haven’t been to the playoffs in 16 years won’t even have a chance at winning anything in the playoffs. They won’t even acknowledge that we are second in the western division. This division is supposed to be the hardest in the NBA. GO KINGS!!! Prove them wrong. I listen to NBA Today( I shouldn’t but I do) and do you think they would mention the Kings just once other than a parting shot once in a while. No Way. If by chance the Kings would get a feature spot on their show I know I shouldn’t but they out to turn them down. No respect to the Kings gets no respect back.

With all due respect, the Kings have gotten a lot of national attention this year as a feel good story, which is really all they are at a national level to this point. To wit, they have still not won a playoff game since 2006. They need to do that before they get the respect for doing that.

Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Shaq were all very complimentary of the Kings and the Kings’ fans last night. They were in universal agreement that a playoff game at G1C would be off the hook. They even lit a beam in the TNT studio.

This team is an incredible local story in the here and the now. As it pertains to the national narrative, they have 16 years of shitnanigans to disprove before they are seen in a positive post-season light.

Be prepared: The Kings will likely be underdogs in their 1st round matchup, even if they have home court advantage. It will be a great opportunity for the Kings to prove that they deserve to be respected in the playoff convo.

And 1 – TNT has a NBA playoff teaser ad running right now, and the Kings (I saw Sabonis) are included in the roll. A small thing, but a major thing for this organization.

Very good points Rob.

Other than a lack of national TV games, I have felt the coverage of the Kings has been very positive, even from the preseason.

Marc Spears, Bill Simmons, Zach Lowe, Mark Stein, Kevin O’Connor, a lot of nationally known names have been talking up the Kings since pre-season.

I love NBA twitter, but there are too many trying to take a bite out of the online attention economy around the NBA that like to come out with some hot takes, or dismissive of teams because they just are not true analysts, I could care less what they think.

I have really enjoyed the attention Domas and Fox and Brown have received this last month, and hope the team finishes strong so they make noise in the playoffs, so there will be an impetus to recognize the aforementioned three in post-season accolades.

Yep. Prior to the season, I could not have imagined in my wildest dreams that this team would generate the amount of positive national attention that it has received. That is a direct result of this team’s performance, and they deserve every bit of it. I don’t feel that they have been shortchanged in any way, and the hope is that there is more to come.

I will add that I am with Nate when it comes to not really caring about national publicity one way or the other. I didn’t care much about it when people (deservedly) clowned on the Kings, didn’t care when folks were saying that the move to Seattle (or Anaheim or Virginia Beach) was a done deal, didn’t care when we were called a cow town. I am glad for the players and coaching staff and front office that the team is getting the recognition that it deserves, but it really doesn’t make any difference to me personally.

Kayte stinks as an analyst so I’m not really sure what your point is. I just don’t know if it’s her or the organization essentially encouraging to sound so condescending and noxious on air. I’m guessing it’s more the latter, but I don’t trust any messaging from the Kings at this point. I don’t waste my time on propaganda. I’ve heard her talk enough over the years to know she’s not dumb. Arrogant, yeah, but not dumb. It is what it is.

Lastly everyone other than the Kings and you and me think because the Kings are young and haven’t been to the playoffs in 16 years won’t even have a chance at winning anything in the playoffs.

I would consider it a great accomplishment to make the playoffs and avoiding the playin. I would it consider a phenomenal season if they made the 2nd rd. Winning anything beyond that just isn’t something I can even fathom at this point. If it happens, great, but I’m not expecting such at this point.

They won’t even acknowledge that we are second in the western division. This division is supposed to be the hardest in the NBA.

Who is they? TNT? I literally heard Charles Barkey and Shaq both acknowledge it, Jamal Crawford said the same thing and Ernie Johnson said light the beam multiple times just in the few minutes I watched. (I don’t usually watch. I also don’t ever care.)

I saw two different outlets, Sports Ilustrated and Yahoo, yesterday alone about the Kings. Dan Devine’s Yahoo piece was largely about Fox, Chris Herring’s piece on SI was about the vibe of the team and city. (The quote about paying child support for 15 kids is wonderful.)

Sorry, I’m not seeing this negative view towards the Kings. If anything, it’s simply amazement and admiration of what this team is doing right now.

I listen to NBA Today( I shouldn’t but I do) and do you think they would mention the Kings just once other than a parting shot once in a while. No Way.

Yeah, so? I don’t care what those folks say on that particular set on ESPN. Also, they’ve had De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis to talk about the season. I don’t get the sense they have that much negative to say but sometimes the overarching storylines include the typical teams and players and that excludes the Kings. It’s not personal, it’s the way ESPN conducts business and chooses their slant with programming.

No respect to the Kings gets no respect back.

A thing I’m nary concerned about to even one iota Jack. But to each they own, my friend.

Disagree about Kayte, she has a thorough understanding of the game, and conveys it neatly to us dopes out there. She can go on a bit long sometimes, but she does a fine job.

There are two different Kaytes for me. The Mark Jones Kayte does a nice job, focusing energy on the x’s and o’s of the game. The Kyle Draper Kayte hurts my ears, complaining about the officiating and fansplaining way too much. Coincidence? I think not.

She’s not just a little arrogant, my goodness.

She’s terrible at her craft. Our little watercooler chat today was talking about how after you listen to her for a few minutes it actually can kill your desire to watch the game….at all. That happens to me all the time.

Maybe it has something to do with living all over the country and growing up in a major sports market where the standards are so ridiculously high. ANY of us could go do color of our favorite team. Many of us would be “ok”, but I’m sure none of us would be excellent. Kayte makes me quite literally turn the game off and I’m counting the days until they finally send her packing and they can get someone with at least one minute of NBA playing experience.

It was an absolute joy to listen to professionals call the game last night. I watched every second, for once.

To each his own. I love Katie who knows a lot about basketball. About last night both commentators spent all night trying a way to discuss the Knicks but the Kings put a damper on them. I will agree 23 offensive rebounds last night is a worry but it doesn’t happen every night. Thought the Kings stopped a lot of straight line drives and protected the paint well. PS I really enjoy Mark’s comments as putting some humor in a game instead of the old cliques.

The Kings broadcast team is bad overall. Kayte used to be good in the old sideline days when she’d just breakdown the game. She knows her stuff. But then she became a Kings shill. She’s a useless annoyance now.

And Draper (to a lesser degree) and Jones are horrible at play by play because they don’t actually do their job. IE- telling us what’s goin on. They both just try to get there stupid catch phrases in etc.

The worst combo in the NBA from all I’ve heard.

I love it when I don’t have to listen to them.

I enjoyed the halftime show. They were clowning on Shaq for selling his portion of the Kings. Shaq also had a slip up and was telling one of the guys he was gonna “fuck him up” and the camera caught it. It was pretty funny. I’ll take that all day over the Kings homers. I love this team, man. But I’ll take those two doofuses calling last nights game over Kayte and whoever they sit next to her. Because that’s all lasnights announcers were, doofuses. They’re lame. Kayte and the other dudes are beyond lame. They’re annoying. I didn’t cringe at all last night. Except small things like when you hear “Kevin Lyles” but I’ll take that all day over some old WNBA story that runs on for 3 or 4 plays.

SVG’s one cogent remark late in the game post the Sabonis fouls that was challenged was the Knicks might want to think about getting Grimes back into the game. He was right. Grimes was draining the 3.

What SVG missed, and an excellent analyst would not have, was the move Coach Brown made to bring Trey Lyles back into the game and he guarded Grimes pre-switch. And, Coach Brown took Keegan out in favor of Lyles.

I am a Kings fan, I don’t go looking for reasons to bend the curvature of light, obviously Fox played his heart out and scored 7 straight points for the Kings when others were not….Lyles role down the stretch was equally as important.

SVG should have enunciated what his eyes were telling his tongue to say…”Let’s see if Coach Brown’s strategy of bringing in Trey Lyles and having an all veteran team on the floor plays out, no time outs left or not.”

He didn’t say a word. Nice points KG21.

What a Huge, Huge win.

Be great to listen to the Kings play Phillip Phillips song “Home” and play a vid on the GC1 Jumbotron during a part of the game.

What was last night, the sixth or seventh game Lyles has made a significant fourth quarter contribution in a win?

An outstanding season from him, especially from a player who has seemed satisfied with being “fine”. His motor is revving higher than past seasons, and definitely seems more physical.

He is one of the reasons I feel like the Kings are going to be very competitive in a seven game series. Brown has eight different players that can be part of a closing lineup, I am not certain many teams have that.

I would be ecstatic to see him just steal a game in what is coming in a month. A really impactful play as you have said many times this season.

He is a difference maker in the minutes he has earned. I think he is going to get many of Metu’s minutes in the playoffs as the match ups dictate and maybe a few that don’t.

Good call JP. This is not something I noticed in real time, but I also noticed Lyles was on the court and Murray wasn’t and didn’t think anything of it. It’s happened enough times now that I don’t really think much of it other than it’s a game that Keegan just isn’t as effective as he is in others.

But yeah, this is a good point:

SVG should have enunciated what his eyes were telling his tongue to say…”Let’s see if Coach Brown’s strategy of bringing in Trey Lyles and having an all veteran team on the floor plays out, no time outs left or not.”

Disappointing to be sure. Brown’s tactical know how shows up in small ways throughout the game and it is unfortunate that someone with SVG’s status as a long time successful NBA head coach didn’t note it.

The Knicks offense is just boring to watch. Heavy Iso ball, players taking turns to “get theirs”. So ugly. RJ Barrett is so damn inefficient. He has no jumper and just tries to get in to the paint. Anything outside of 3ft for him is awful.

Their offense reminded me of many Kings offenses over the past 16 years. Give it to Tyreke and run a 1-4 flat, feed it to Boogie and let him work, let Buddy dribble, dribble, dribble, then shoot a contested 3, etc.

They seemed to be in some sort of 1-1-3 zone all night. Paint defense is pretty easy when you’ve got 3 guys standing just outside of the restricted area at the start of every half-court possession.

Got to see the beam for the first time. Message sending victory and unlike football, all the rain was outside the arena.

I hope to see the beam in person some day. I went to the Nuggets game with my folks on Dec. 27, but they lost that one. Then they won the very next day against the Nuggets and I missed it. 🙁

It is crazy fun in DOCO watching the games. I probably won’t be able to afford a playoff game but I will sure as shit be watching in one of the places at DOCO.

Can we do a TKH meetup at a sports bar in DOCO during the playoffs?? I’d totally drive up to Sac one weekend to do so.

They are doing a meetup next weekend at Sauced for the Wizards game. Look up Jon Catterson on Twitter if you want to go.
