Chainmail: Submit your questions about the Sacramento Kings

We'll have another guest this week. And yes, that means more photoshop work from Will!
By | 129 Comments | Aug 5, 2020

Welcome back to Chainmail, where the Kings never improve and neither do the answers!

Over the last week, the Sacramento Kings have done nothing more than to prove that they’re incapable of winning meaningful basketball games, no matter how much they talk, no matter how much tape is viewed, and no matter how disrespected they feel by being forgotten by the national media. After an embarrassing loss to the undermanned San Antonio Spurs, a blowout from the Orlando Magic, and a blown opportunity against Maxi Kleber and the Dallas Mavericks, the Kings sit at 0-3 in Orlando and have no real shot at making the play-in tournament. Will, our special guest, and I am here to answer your questions about how to fix this mess, how the team might perform over the next five games, what moves can be made this offseason if management (likely) remains, or whatever else is ringing your cowbell in the given moment.

If I’ve watched enough movies, we will eventually find out that we were all terrible people in our past lives and this fandom is some type of a cosmic punishment.

Okay, based on the above Twitter……….our coach knew Hield can really shoot the ball, but he still wanted him to do more on court….

But the fact is Buddy Hield is averaging at least 2 critical turnover whenever he tries to do more on court (i.e. dribbling) ….and Hield had never improved throughout the season and in the bubble..and we have lost two games in a row (before the Dallas games), did Walton see what we see from Hield ?

In short, Hield can only shoot, why would this coach never learn ?

Great coaches change their approach to enhance the strengths of their players and to hide their weaknesses.

Bad coaches have a single system that they cannot adjust.

Guess which one we have.

Bad coaches have a single system that they cannot adjust.

and Bad player have a single skill (shooting) that they cannot do anything else (dribbling)

Guess who I am implying ?

I simply cannot relieved……..It’s now just a complete disaster….

When can the team start all over again or maybe rename the team’s name to “Sacramento Doncic” ?

LOL! “Sacramento Doncic” is hilarious.

I would really love to see one of them youtube videos where people show their reaction to listening to a song for the first time, or watching a popular film they’ve never seen before……….

….but instead, it’s a reaction video of Vlade and Vivek watching this game. Close up on their faces.

Highlight the parts where Gary Gerould and Doug Christie give high praise to Luka Doncic.

Maybe this might be a question for special guest Carmichael Dave.

Will the “whole chess board” be revealed come this off season or are we kicking the can down the road another year? If we are kicking the can, yeah yeah we are, what insight can be offered about the chess board prior to the shutdown?

If the Kings go 0-8 or 1-7 in these bubble games… will that even be enough for Vivek to see that Vlade is a terrible GM? Maybe 0-8 and Harry Giles balling out and getting signed by the Lakers? In sum, what would it take for Vivek Ranadive to pull his head out of his ass and realize that he sucks and he has to get someone capable to fix this and get the eff out of the way?

What can we do?
We tried the #HereWeBillboard action, which was plagued by unfortunate timing (the breakout of Vovid-19), silence from most local news outlets and probably some execution which needs improvement (I suck ath these things).

What does the TKH staff think, purely as a thinking exercise, what would be a good way to put pressure on ownership?

  • a coordinated social media appeal to the ownership group?
  • submit a petition, signed by fans?
  • something playful, like begging the Suns FO to merge into the SunKings (hat tip to Game of Zones)?

I think a coordinated effort with a specific target might be effective. But also make it a little playful. I suggested this back in the billboard planning phase, but I think appealing to basketball front office monolith Jerry West to come save us next might get some steam.

He built the L*kers, made the Grizzlies relevant, brought a dynasty to Oakland, and made even the Clippers legitimate championship contenders.

If he wants a real challenge: come save the Kings.

Seriously you could even keep Vlade around and have him learn from his mentor. Might be the only guy with enough clout to put Vivek in his place and tell him to shut the f*ck up and take notes.

We could make #SaveUsJerryWestYou’reOurOnlyHope trend on social media. The local media would think it’s fun. Might be the only way to fix this thing.

Jerry West is the Best!

…I’m thinking he’s the antithesis to Vivek’s approach. West is tried and true, while Vivek is all about trying to be a pioneer and getting recognition for changing the game. He wants to be a revolutionary game-changer.

I wish he’d realize his “revolution” is going at a snail’s pace.

Imagine Jerry West sitting at a table during the draft giving his recommendation and Matina tries to chime in. Mr. West lifts his eyes up over his in-depth scouting report tirelessly prepared by a multitude of professional scouts and just glares at her and says “Who the fuck are you?”

I would bet that the George Karl situation soured Vivek/Matina on listening to the fans. Of course, they have made 100’s of other mistakes, but that is the one they will point to if the fans ask for a change.

Thing is, George Karl is probably the brightest basketball mind we’ve had here the entire Vivek era. Sure he was well past his prime as a coach, but if we had just listened to him as a GM we’d probably have traded Cousins sooner for a much bigger haul and at least been in the playoffs by now.

LOL. First of all, the trade Karl reportedly was interested in was like Ty Lawson, Kenneth Faried, and other stuff (I can’t find the tweet referencing it) from Denver. The original Lakers trade that Boogie’s agent/team was trying to engineer revolved around Randle, Clarkson and the #2 pick that became Brandon Ingram.

So Karl may have had the right idea from a timing perspective, but I don’t think the Kings would’ve received much in terms of young assets if he was in charge of negotiating a trade.

Furthermore, if the Kings ended up with Buddy + Mitchell/Bam or Buddy + Collins (#15) & OG (#20), and Thomas Bryant with the Pelicans’ 2nd round pick, then either of those are comparable to the Lakers offer. I’d still prefer Ingram to those two scenarios (I think), but we don’t even know the Kings would’ve used the #2 pick to draft Ingram. They may have used it to draft Buddy based on Vivek’s stated infatuation. Finally, the Kings would’ve received 2 FRPs from the Pelicans if Vlade had done a better job of dealing with Cousins in the lead up to the trade.

That being said, I agree in principle (and said so at the time) that the Kings should’ve traded Cousins once Karl said no player is untradeable. A) it just seemed like the marriage was over at that point, B) it made sense to do a full rebuild since the Kings had no real way to build around Cousins. There’s also the added bonus that the Philly trade never happens if the Kings chose to trade Cousins at that time.

So, did Karl have the right idea to trade Cousins? Yes. Did the Kings lose trade value by waiting to move Cousins? Probably, but it depends on a lot of unknown factors. Do I think Karl the GM would’ve put this team on a better path? I doubt it. I think his goal was to become the winningest coach of all-time. His decisions would’ve been win-now versus a typical rebuilding process. It may have paid off in the short-term, but I don’t think his strategy would’ve been sustainable over the long-term.

I’m going to agree with most of what you said, although I think if GK was evaluating the talent, the draft picks might have gone differently. And bottom line I disagree that we wouldn’t be on a better path if Karl were the GM over Vlade. To me that is a no-brainer.

Perhaps he would have chosen to win now, but we would probably have a playoff berth at least to show for it by now. Versus winning never with Vlade.

I agree they probably would’ve made the playoffs. I just don’t think they would be closer to winning a championship. As I’ve said before, I think the Kings would’ve made at least 1 playoff berth in the last 7 years if we just let this community make decisions by popular vote. That’s different, though, than actually building a team with sustained success with a championship as the ultimate goal.

Since management refuses to acknowledge their mistakes how long are we stuck with Coach L, and Vlad the self impaler?

What amount of shaming/booing, boycotting will it take before we embarrass the organization enough that the cost analysis shows it’s better to eat that money, than continue on this course? If you had to bet, how long do Vlad and Coach L last?

Can we use a new moniker for Luke Walton?
The Tape ?
Apart from his fetish of watching them and then doing nothing, his pressers also sound mostly the same, as if you’re playing the same tape over and over again (from my tape recorder time: Queens Greatest Hits).

I know there are a lot of doomsday questions but the apathy train is rapidly picking up steam and the deathknell of a sports team/fan base is apathy, not frustration and anger.

So maybe I’ll ask the question this way: How far away are the Sacramento Kings from hitting a critical mass of fan apathy?

It’s the gosh darn Kings social media that keeps sharing videos from the early 2000’s!

Fans have warm feelings towards the memories of what this team used to be.

They Kings social media team also sells the fans on the future: “just imagine how good this team will be 2 years from now. It’s a super team, just young!”

But this team currently, with it’s ownership and front office, sucks.

…insert comic illustration of the Kings holding a jersey retirement ceremony of Jason Williams’s jersey at a game where the Kings are in the middle of another losing season.

It’s not just you, PlayoffModeT. I feel the same way. I LOVE those memories, but it’s really sad that that is what we have available to celebrate as Kings fans, rather than current successes.

Maybe it’s kind of like (insert your favorite band) playing songs from their glory years at a concert you attend in the present day. All of their current songs are unremarkable, but you have to sit through them only so you can hear that one old song during the encore. Meanwhile, your friends are at a concert of a great band that is currently in their prime. Ok, that might be a poor analogy, but I just miss going to concerts right now.

QUESTION(s):

What is your assessment of the job Gary Gerould is doing as the other guy’s replacement?
And how is Doug Christie doing alongside Gary Gerould as opposed to the other guy?
How is Jason Ross doing?
Would you replace Gary Gerould after this season? If so, with who?

BONUS QUESTION:

Who among the TKH staff would you pick to be a play-by-play announcer, and who would you pick to do color commentary? (I imagine this would be for a pickup basketball game between TKH members.)

We keep hearing that we have to give Vlade time due to the potential of our young players.

Now that it’s been nearly 5 years – what would you grade Vlade’s drafting prowess so far?

Probably fair to grade picks like WCS, Papa G, Richardson, Skal, Fox, JJ, Giles, and passing on Luka at this point.

This might be more of an article request versus a mailbag question for Tim. Can you estimate how much money the team could potentially save over the next 2-3 years if they did a full Hinkie-style rebuild versus their current estimated projections? The talking heads like to say Vivek was considering firing Vlade this offseason, but can’t afford to replace him now due to revenue losses. That just seems false choice they feed us to avoid accountability. The cost of a GM’s salary can’t be more than what Richaun Holmes makes for instance. It seems like they could fund the best basketball operations dept. money can buy by simply not re-signing Bogi.

This will be a very messy calculation as the impacts of COVID and potential bubble impact fan revenue.

That said, hard to imagine that we keep the stadium full even if the world returns to normal running out another 30-40 win team next season and finishing bottom 3 in the West.

Yeah my working assumption is we’re basically in a doomsday scenario on the revenue side. It just seems like that gives the Kings a unique opportunity to hit the reset button on the operations side.

MIND-BLOWING REVELATION:

Instead of paying Vlade a salary similar to what Richaun Holmes makes, Vivek is paying Vlade a salary similar to what LeBron James makes.

This is also more of an article request, but can we get an article dispelling the local media narrative that this team is €œyoung€ and €œinexperienced?€ Seriously, the median age of the team is not young and there are NBA champions on the roster. Oh, and could said article come with colorful charts and graphs?!

Yeah, this is a very easy point to make (and one I did last year as well). Fox and Bagley are young. But look at our rotation in Orlando:

Starters
Fox 22
Bogi 27
Barnes 27
Bjelica 31
Holmes 26

Bench
CoJo 28
Hield 27
Bazemore 30
Giles: 21
Len: 26
Brewer: 33

Our rotation isn’t young at all. We have one major rotation player under age 26 and two if we count the varying minutes Giles gets.

The notion that we aren’t winning because we are too young and winning is just false. We are just mediocre and poorly coached.

Do Kings fans consistently overrate their team… aka is it our expectations fault?? Maybe we just suck??? Hear me out
Fox is a borderline allstar but still not there, Bogi’s mids at everything, HB is a solid defender but disappears most nights, Bjelly is a turnstile and has too many 0/0 nights for an offensive weapon, Richaun is an elite bench C… but average to below average starting C. Buddy is an elite, top 3, offball shooter… but then below average to trash at everything else, Bazemore all energy & hustle and little skill, Harry is a great facilitator but bad at everything else, Cojo has been a good 3&D point but he slows the game to a halt when he runs sets. I guess Daquan is cool.
I see Fox surrounded by a bunch of bench players on good teams. Luke sucks too, but I think that’s the main reason.
We’re just not good.

He is who he always was.

This Barnes is very consistent with the Barnes we have watched the last few years. We just paid him about $8-10M too much per season.

I think you might have to use a company that makes custom patches, and then you could sew it on. Or if there’s an iron-on patch making company, that’d probably make it easier!

why is the Herald crowd so negative? Just look at the bubble as a very long All Star-Weekend where the whole team made the cut. Ok, maybe an ASW version that only consists of HORSE games…

Real question: What’s your view on the upcoming season? Let’s say the bubble holds – can you imagine the NBA playing under similar circumstances for a full year (potentially with breaks)? I mean there is a fair amount of athletic, hormone driven, single males at work – I guess several of them would love to pull a Lou Williams at one point in time….

So rather than down vote you Ill give you some insight.

You propose the bubble as “an ASW or just an ASW with HORSE”.

That would be a good approach for those with 0 expectations about the bubble.

But ASW activities dont count towards the regular season. The bubble games do count. Regardless of an asterisk there will be a champion and thats how it was sold to fans. An opportunity for the Kings to make the post season and possibly make some noise. And the fans were going to get to see that the game play leading up to the shutdown werent an anomaly.

Yeah I think it is a trademark of losing organizations to make excuses and dismiss their failures. Instead of learning from them.

This could be a wakeup call that the Kings are performing poorly in games that actually matter. Maybe they aren’t as good as the FO thinks they are. But I’m sure there will be a list of excuses. “Covid killed our momentum.” “This season didn’t really matter anyway.” “It’s just training camp for us. Next season we’re REALLY going to show everybody.”

Meanwhile other teams are stepping up. The Suns making up ground. The Blazers really want it, and the Spurs being the Spurs.

I recently binged watched Avatar: The Last Airbender for the umpteenth time while I worked on my personal animation project in Photoshop (consdering I’m currently furloughed from work it gives me an excuse to work on it some more since I started it when the initial SIP happened). They’re releasing Legend of Korra in mid August.

And I remember in early April I ended up watching all of Tiger King in one day.

Given his play this season, and for much of the bubble time, why are the Kings looking to lock up Bogdanovic long term and for a lot of money? If he is resigned, what kind of contract makes sense at this point? Is there a sign and trade that might make more sense?

Over the lifespan of STR / The Kings Herald we’ve seen commenters post time and time again that they’ve reached their breaking point, and that they can no longer watch this team. I have certainly been one of those posters.

As the reality of yet another squandered opportunity becomes more and more inevitable, I’m curious about whether you, the editors, foresee any shift in your Kings fandom after this season. I’m a current Wisconsin resident, and have decided that I will be turning my attention and support to the Bucks for the remainder of this season. If nothing drastic happens during the offseason, I’ll be primarily a Bucks fan for next season as well.

Do you ladies and gents have backup teams? Would a split from the Kings mean a split from the NBA? Will those of us who do choose to defect be welcome back as Kings fans if this organization ever gets their shit together, or would that automatically make us band wagoners?

I only want to root for the Kings in basketball. I still enjoy the hell out of commiserating with you all here on TKH. So that is fun. (and sad)

Aside from other major sports, what is keeping me going during basketball season? That would be THE SAVAGE SPEEDERS in the Marble League and Marbula One. They are everything that the current Sacramento Kings are not: exciting, well-coached, winners.

This might be kind of a fun question. Which team do you think has the better supporting cast for a team with Luka on it– the Kings or Mavs? Watching the game yesterday, I couldn’t help but notice the Mavs throw up brick after brick on nice setups from Doncic. And it got me imagining what the this exact Kings team would look like with Luka on it (I know, it’s depressing but I couldn’t help it).

I think the Kings would be better than the Mavs are currently. Even though they have Porzingis, I think we have enough shooters and role players that would really complement the playmaking of Luka. And contrary to what Vlade says, I don’t see Luka taking the ball out of anyone’s hands. Other guards are consistently running point even when he’s in the game, giving them different looks nearly every time down the court. Imagine Doncic dishing to a cutting Fox who finds Bogi in the corner, who kicks it to Hield for an open elbow 3… with Holmes waiting to put back or tap out the rebound if necessary… Fuck.

Anyway, if the Mavs are a solid 7th seed in the West with that group, I think the Kings might be at least a couple games better, which might put them currently in 5th or 4th.

I have thought of this too but I also try not to beat a dead horse. If you minus Bagley, our team is built for a Lebron, Luka, Kawhi type SF to run the show.

First of all, I am for multiple play-makers. Luka doesnt really have a second ball handler and without looking up stats, I am sure he is extremely high up in usage. To me using Barea, Curry, and Burke are identical to running Yogi and Joseph. They are not lethal enough scorers or passers to warrant attention or gravity.

Bjelica, Holmes, and Giles (without declining his option) would easily be the bigs to pair.

Barnes, I wouldnt have gave an extension if he demanded more than 60M. He doesnt move the needle for me.

Not signing Barnes and drafting Doncic would have easily save money for Bogi and later down the line for Fox.

The acquisition of a transcendent star would really just slide people into place.

Took a test last month when I thought I might’ve been exhibiting symptoms, but it turned out negative.

Job-wise, things are going well since my jobs allow me to telecommute.

Physical fitness-wise, I’m gettin really out of shape not going out much. Trying to get my bike fixed for midnight rides when hardly anyone is out there.

Mental health-wise, I get melancholy every once in awhile, and try to be cheerful around my wife so that she won’t get depressed.

I miss my family and friends, and just doing normal things like watching a movie in a theater and hearing people laughing around me.

How are you holding up, SMF-PDXConnection?

I took a test two weeks ago (didn’t have any symptoms, but since it was free took advantage of it), and two weeks later I’ve basically been left in the dark and have heard nothing. They said it would take 2-5 days to get my results back. Sent an email to the email they referred to if it took longer than seven days, and got a generic copy/paste email back basically saying “you will get your results as soon as possible, blah blah blah.” By the time the results do come (if ever) it basically defeats the whole purpose of getting tested since it will have been past two weeks. I’m frustrated with it, but it is what it is I guess.

Job-wise, I’m currently furloughed; been furloughed since late June along with most of our company, and at the moment we have no return date set. It sounds like the company will get through this period since we are still getting business, but not enough to have all the employees on payroll. It’s going to suck since the federal aid for unemployment ran out so starting last week I only got the state unemployment which is $450 a week, but I should still be okay financially since I’m pretty frugal by nature anyway. Hopefully Congress gets a deal sooner rather than later.

Physical fitness-wise, I know I’ve lost pretty much all my muscle mass. I do cardio 3-4 times a week when I go out for 30 minute jogs. At the beginning of quarantine I was doing some small strength exercises like planks and push ups, but I kind of fell out of it…Diet-wise I’m still the same, still eating essentially the same things (good foods for the most part) and fortunately haven’t gotten into bad habits like buying a big bag of gummy bears (as tempting as it sounds since we’re stuck at home for the most part).

Mental-health-wise I suppose I’m doing alright. I feel a part of me has sort of fallen into my new routine of exercise in the morning, work on my personal art from after lunch to dinner, then play games/chill on my laptop after dinner. The other part of me definitely misses being able to go out anywhere without worrying about catching a virus, eating at restaurants, going to watch movies at the theater, seeing friends and family, and missing my trips I was planning on taking this year. I think actually my brother has been a great source of being able to help me in the social aspect. Usually once a week, me, him and two other old friends play online games and video chat on Friday nights, and there have been a few times where I went with him and his girlfriend hiking in several places (at his initiating of course, because being the shy person I am, I rarely initiate things like that). I’ve been able to see my parents a few times, and we have day hiking trip planned in a couple weeks.

I think working on my artwork has also been a nice distraction that keeps me sane. It’s funny because when I look back, though I wish this whole pandemic never happened, I would have never started work on the personal art project I’m currently working on (animating in Photoshop with dialogue) that I started at the start of quarantine. It still probably will be a couple months before it’s finished, but because I’ve gotten into the habit of working on it a little everyday (and not overworking myself) it’s been making good progress and can’t wait to have it done and to send it to the voice actress that helped me with providing dialogue. I actually already sent her an email regarding this and she sounded really stoked.

Lastly, THANK YOU for The Kings Herald community….you guys are a really big reason I’ve been able to get by day-by-day during this trying period of time. Even though I don’t know most of you personally, you are all my literal virtual family. You have no idea how hard it was waiting for a month between the end of that-one-site to the launch of TKH. But it was so worth the wait and I’m glad I have a forum to talk to you guys everyday. And the jokes and GIFs really bring a smile and laugh to me everyday.

EDIT: Sorry for the length, I just kinda got carried away in responding to you, Kosta. 🙂

Well, I live in downtown Portland again, so you can start there (which is not to imply I am against the protests).

I moved apartments recently after spending four months inside with a one foot wide window that opened six inches for fresh air (I have a private balcony now). The lack of outdoor time (since every trip outside my apartment had to be planned and coordinated due to seeming lack of many people in that building taking it seriously and having to ride the elevator to get anywhere) was making me cuckoo. I have seen one friend (and not since early May) and had been visiting my (ex) girlfriend (with masks and hand sanitizer, haven’t been outside without a mask since early April). I’ve had a lot of alone time to think about design and architecture and how this will change so much of how we do things.

Work has been great, we were set up for remote work before this since no one has desktops, everyone’s issued a laptop. Been a lot of busy, stressful weeks, but we all agree it’s better than the alternative, especially given the massive layoffs in this field from the major firms in Portland.

It has been sort of surreal being in Portland and Oregon during this. I left Seattle the weekend of the first confirmed case. I see the numbers and hear the stories from Washington and California and am scared, but somehow Oregon has stayed below either of the states sandwiching it. Even our recent surge would barely be a blip in California.

I’ve been in a fluctuating state of terror ever since this started after I spent an evening in the ER in Seattle in January with mystery chest pain. I also spent the month of March with a bad cough and occasional feeling of hotness/crispiness, but wasn’t tested back then because that was when it was believed you had to have a fever. Either way, two antibody tests two months apart have both been negative.

Every day, I remember that we are in a pandemic when I think of what little day to day problems are happening, like an avocado that got too ripe before I could use it. I also struggle every day thinking of the particularly egregious and unacceptable moral and ethical catastrophe this is here in the US. When my heart can’t take much more, I switch to Call of Duty and Archer. Also heard from a friend recently who works in the medical supply chain with acquisitions, shipping, logistics, said any gear or whatever you think you need, to buy it now because there are pinch points in the supply chains that could lead to shortages as the situation worsens going into fall and winter. That was enough for me to follow Fauci’s lead and get eye protection.

Glad to hear you’re doing all right. Maybe there should be a Kings Herald Zoom happy hour night or something. This goes for everyone here.

Stay safe. Stay smart. Be well.

And wear a damn mask, people.

If all these years of missed playoffs, possible relocation, horrible hires, missed draft picks, bad free agent signings and all the other garbage that’s happened hasn’t stopped your fandom, what will? I feel like I’m very close to ending it if Vlade isn’t removed from office this summer.

Would you like to see a play in for the playoffs next season? Ziller was advocating for it in a recent column as it has led to some exciting, meaningful basketball.
