Sacramento Kings announce Richaun Holmes will miss remainder of the season due to personal reasons

We wish Richaun the best.

The Sacramento Kings announced Friday that Richaun Holmes will miss the remainder of the season due to personal reasons. The Kings included statements from Kings GM Monte McNair, and a statement from Holmes himself.

“Richaun is a core member of our team, who is very important to our success,” said McNair. “We fully support Rich and look forward to seeing him back on the court for the 2022-23 NBA season.”

“I would like to thank everyone for their support during these difficult times,” said Holmes. “I love this team, I love my teammates and I look forward to returning next year.”

Holmes’ mother had previously shared via Twitter than there had been a death in the family, and Holmes has been in and out of the lineup recently for personal reasons.

With the season drawing to a close it makes sense for the Kings to begin shutting players down, especially if that allows Holmes an opportunity to be with his family during a difficult time.

There’s an expectation that the Kings will try to trade Holmes this offseason, meaning we might have seen Holmes in a Kings uniform for the last time. Whether he returns next season or not, we wish Holmes and his family all the best at this time.

I still don’t understand why he would be at the games in street clothes, but miss the game for personal reasons. If there are family problems that are so substantial that you can’t play at the level you expect of yourself, what are you doing at work?

Suffice it to say that I don’t know anything, and I hope whatever has been troubling him will be alleviated so that he can get back to his own normalcy.

From experience, I would wager that his concentration and focus is impacted by the loss. I am assuming that while he is playing he knows that his current mental state could negatively impact his performance and the team, but the lack of concentration doesn’t hurt the team when he is supporting them from the bench.

I love watching Holmes play at his best, so whatever he needs to do to get back to that is fine with me.

Not sure I can wish him the best.

I dont like the fact that his family has lost a close loved one but a lot of players go through hardship and still eventually do their jobs

This seems more an agreement to shut him down so he doesn’t lose any more trade value pouting on the floor for not being a starter, as much as its about his family issues

Either way, sad ending to his career here

That’s some seriously insensitive stuff when you have no idea what the facts are.

This seems more an agreement to shut him down so he doesn’t lose any more trade value pouting on the floor for not being a starter, as much as its about his family issues.

This seems more of an agreement for the team to let him pursue his career as an astronaut so he doesn’t miss his opportunity to go to Mars, as much as its about his family.

See how I can speculate too?

Ok, I dont believe the average player who goes through the hardship takes the fourth of the season off

The family issue happened simultaneously with the trade. The Kings had to put it out there in an article that they tried to trade him after a week of bad play. They said they worked until the deadline to trade him. Another article detailed he would be traded this summer

Those articles seemed to pacify Holmes desire to not have been benched..

Just sounds like an astute observation to me. I don’t remember KAT shutting it down for the season when his mother died from Covid complications. Also why is it insensitive? I could see you making that statement if he had said something like that to Holmes face but this is just a comment section on a blog site. Relax man. Don’t cancel him lol. I would wager his guess is as good as any as to why Holmes won’t be playing the rest of the season. That said, I would also be inclined to believe that there was a death in the family and that Richaun is dealing with personal issues. He’s also getting paid a lot of money to go to work. Insensitive or not, that is a fact. I feel bad for anyone suffering loss just like when I lost my parents. However life goes on and I didn’t miss two to three months of work because of it, if I had I would have lost my job.

Wishing Richaun and his family the best has to do with their status as fellow human beings, not Richaun’s current status as a player.

As long as he’s being held accountable for possibly quitting on the team because of his reduced role, I’m fine with wishing him well on the family issue he had

I took wishing him well in the context presented as accepting the personal issue as the focal point reason to miss a fourth of the season, and I started off with saying possibly losing a lost one sucks for all involved (meaning I do wish him well in that regard)

I personally found nothing wrong with your comment. I feel the replies you received were actually far more insensitive and possibly bordering on mean spirited. It was obvious you didn’t wish any negativity toward Holmes. I think some people take it upon themselves to be their own heroes in a world they alone live in.

I wish people would grow thicker skin these days and stop judging every flipping thing other people say. He has a different opinion, that doesn’t make him a bad person and quite honestly he’s probably right. Insensitive? Ya, maybe a bit. Why does it bother you? Are you all the sensitivity police? I like Richaun a lot and wish him the best but like I said in my previous comment, KAT didn’t shut his season down when his own mother passed due to Covid and I myself only missed 2 days when my parents passed. Life happens to us all and if we were all soft and just stopped going to work, we’d all lose our jobs. Why should NBA players who make millions to do what they love be any different? Hell he didn’t say anything to insult Richaun or belittle whatever tragedy is keeping out of work for close to 3 months, he simply made a hypothesis as to why he was really missing so much time. Which is more realistic as a possibility to you? That someone would miss 3 months due to personal anguish over the loss of a loved one? Or that an NBA player who has been playing poorly and in a limited capacity might be shut down for the rest of the season for issues related to said play and capacity? And before you go jumping down my throat for this post, I don’t know what is going on just like you and he nor anyone else know what is really going on. My post is intended to serve as an instrument to perhaps get you to understand that you nor anyone else on this site are qualified to judge him for his comment. You can respectfully argue your point of view but that’s not what you did. You thought it would be correct to put him down and chastise him for his view. Is that not insensitive? Perhaps thinking before you use your keyboard is a good idea? For the record, I respect all of you and think this is a great community of people. I also appreciate different opinions and viewpoints. It’s unfortunate most people would rather everyone be exactly the same these days. How freaking boring would that be.

Seriously? Seriously? First of all Richaun isn’t reading your comments. Second he said nothing to demean or otherwise hurt Richaun. He made an observation. And a logical one at that. Your comment is the one which is insensitive and pointed directly at a human being whom you are having an actual conversation with. Take your fake sympathy and elevated importance someplace else. Try being polite. He said nothing to personally offend you. You on the other hand are quite disrespectful Karen.

Point by point:

How do you know what Richaun does and does not read. Many commented with the thought that their words might get to Richaun and provide comfort to him and his family.

He assumed that he understood what Richaun is experiencing and suggested that it was insufficient to justify taking the rest of the season off. How does he know what Richaun is going through right now. People respond to what seem to be the same things in very different ways. A modicum of humanity demands that we not judge. There is absolutely nothing whatsoever that is logical in inthestarz’ remarks.

My comment was not directed at a human being but at what he wrote: it is some seriously stupid shit that lacks humanity. Some people lack humanity. Does inthestarz? I didn’t comment on that.

You judge that my feelings (which are expressed below) are fake. How do you know that?

When one person shows a lack of sympathy to someone who seems to be suffering, that rightly offends me.

I disrespect no one in what I wrote. However, what inthestarz wrote is some stupid shit and lacks humanity.

A modicum of cynicism and skepticism would demand we not overlook this started exactly when he was benched, articles have been made through the Kings coddling the situation by iterating they tried to trade him and will trade him this offseason, and that most players do not experience the let down in games and play due to off court situations

I think I was wrong in not stressing that it is my opinion that he likelihood is more due to the benching than the personal issue though, no one knows definitively

Here is why you and Claystreet have made me angry: the piece by Greg and the comments by all of the commenters but the two of you (I believe you two are the only exceptions) constituted a warm and kind tribute to a player and person who has shown enthusiasm, teamwork, skill, and heart. For all that we have seen he deserves our kindness. It seems he has experienced something that has made it hard for him (different people respond differently to what seem like the same personal losses—a mature person knows this from experience) to play with the same fire he had always shown us. The article and comments might have been printed and given to Richaun or his family as a tribute to his play. Now that seems impossible.

You are right that what you and Claystreet have written displays cynicism. In this context it seems to me that to be cynical about Richaun’s motives displays a lack of humanity and feeling for someone who seems to be suffering. It makes no sense to me.

To say it’s your opinion doesn’t help. Expressions of a cynical opinion when sympathy is what’s called for are hurtful. Keep it to yourself or express it in another context where it is not a veiled attack on Richaun. “Not sure I can wish him the best,” you wrote. Why even write such a thing? About Richaun?

The title of the thread is about Richaun being shut down, not giving our condolences to him.

There are two conflicting reasons for why he is being shut down

Those who believe he is being shut down in large part because he is unhappy with his role essentially believe he is being given a free pass by you guys accepting the personal reason for him missing/playing bad for a fourth of the season instead of doing his job. And you guys giving him a free pass on what his legacy will be here.

https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2176563&start=40

Thats how non Kings fans would feel. Many, the slight majority are in favor of showing him good will, but many feel it has to do with his status as a player

I suggest you reread Greg’s article. Then read all of the comments until you jumped in.

The Kings expressed support for Richaun. He thanked everyone for their support “in these difficult times.” Greg conveyed his best wishes. So did all the other commenters.

Until you jumped in with “Not sure I can wish him the best.” When others pointed out the lack of sympathy and human feeling in what you wrote, you doubled down, and Claystreet backed you up.

Why did you have to express your cynicism in a way that spoiled what was going to be a nice expression of support for Richaun? Why did you feel the need to question Richaun’s motives?

That is true. That said other NBA players and human beings as a whole go through many different forms of tragedy and keep working and living. He’s missing the rest of the season not a few games. It is certainly logical to assume it is related to his trade value and play. He never once said he didn’t wish Richaun well and even stated after the first comment that he absolutely did wish him well. So what’s the problem? Other than it makes some people who believe they never do anything wrong feel better about themselves if they can feel like a hero for a few minutes when really it just makes you look unreasonable and a bit too aggressive.

And people take being benched differently as well….

It would be convenient to just give Richaun the benefit of this personal reason costing him a fourth of the season for Richaun

There is a reason the Kings worked diligently to move him til the deadline and reported it and why its been reported he will be traded first thing this summer.

Even if all players who lost a parent (which is not the case here I believe) didn’t play for a fourth of the season a lot of players would be inactive

I’ve gone through it. In fact you could say my life has literally been filled with loss and pain. Yet I continued to work and live. Life goes on. It simply must. I do understand people and what they go through and yet I agree with most of his initial comment other than quitting on the team, I do not concur with that point. I think the team shut him down for the season. No reason not to. I also don’t think he’s out of touch or insensitive. He simply has an opinion that differs from apparently all of the liberals on this site. And no I’m not Conservative. I just think your all cray cray. If you learn to one side or the other eventually your going to fall over. Think about it and think for yourself. Anyway, if he made those comments or like comments to my face as a person who has lost my parents, my sister and two of my best friends in this world, I would not have taken offense, nor do I believe Richaun would. He’s a man and I’m sure he could handle comments like that no problem. It’s you all who could use a lesson in relaxing a bit. People have different opinions and I hope to God they always will.

Here is my question, who is judging Richaun? All I see is a bandwagon of idiots judging one commenter as if they were a lynch mob. Why? Because he has a different view? He did wish Richaun well, I myself wish Richaun well. He is one of my favorite kings players of all time. What I take issue with is a group of people who seem to think they are better than someone else in some self appointed way and that group of people simply feed off of the others in the group and feel validation because of it. That is mob mentality and turns ugly quickly. If I’m the idiot you were referring to, I certainly find your opinion of my intellect amusing. It’s also funny you feel comfortable personally attacking another person and yet somehow others are insensitive? Can you see the hypocrisy?
