The Sacramento Kings are hiring Jim Moran as an assistant coach on Mike Brown’s staff, according to reports. Moran has been with the Portland Trail Blazers’ G League team, the Rip City Remix, as head coach since 2023. Prior to that he worked as an assistant for the Blazers, as well as a brief stint as an assistant with the Pistons. Sean Cunningham was the first to report the news.
Mike Brown continues to add to his coaching staff after several openings due to opportunities for some of his coaches. According to league sources, Jim Moran, most recently with the G League’s Rip City Remix, will be joining the Sacramento Kings as an assistant coach.

The news was confirmed by Sean Highkin of the Rose Garden Report, who wrote about Moran:
The 45-year-old Moran was very well-liked by Blazers players and staff and is seen by many around the NBA as a future head coaching prospect.
Danny Marang, who covers the Blazers both on the radio and on podcasts, shared the following:
Sacramento Kings got themselves a great one in Jimmy Mo.
Jim Moran is going to be a head coach in the NBA. But until then, he’ll be great on Mike Brown’s staff.
Selfishly, bummed he’s leaving – but I wish him nothing but the best going forward. Great coach, better human.

It certainly sounds like the Kings got a solid up-and-comer to add to Brown’s staff.
I read too slow…
…Did he coach Kris with the Blazers while in Rip City? He’s about to see the Murray remix here in Sacramento.
Mike Brown’s Coaching
StaffUniversity 🙂Any idea what the pecking order now is on the bench? Who’s the official lead assistant? Triano? Christie?
As far as I know, that has not been announced. Teams usually provide an official breakdown closer to training camp.
I thought it was Loucks
I thought it was announced Loucks got the lead assistant job. After that I would guess Triano, Christie, and now Jimmy Mo in that order.
Loucks is reported as being promoted to the lead group of assistants, not that he’s necessarily the lead assistant.
Michael Scott would be proud.
James Ham on his most recent podcast reported that Loucks is Jordi’s replacement. So, did Jordi lead the group of assistants, was the lead assistant, or both?
Welcome, Bugs.
Insightful, if hurtful info from Marang:
that is hilarious
Considering I’ve never heard of the guy, I will have to take the word of the other guy I’ve never heard of that we’ve landed ourselves a good assistant.
Just be happy that it’s not Aneel or Anjali!
Ok – my Wikipedia gathered regurgitation:
The 45 yr old Irish-American is a New Yawker (North Shore of Long Island). Moran is 6’7” – so yes- he can play Small Forward and did for the Tribe at William & Mary where he was All-CAA (Colonial Athletic Assn) but went undrafted in the 2001 NBA Draft.
He headed to Liga Euro where he played 10 seasons for Gran Canaria and was honored with having #20 jersey retired by the the club (1st and only)..
He returned stateside to coach with G-League Maine Red Claws and landed an NBA slot with the Portland Trailblazers where he stayed for 6 seasons. He went to the Pistons for a couple of seasons and then got the gig as the first ever Head Coach for Portland’s G-League Rip City Remix just one year ago.
Hoop Lifer – These guys that grind a career through grit and passion are always impressive to me.
As for Mike Brown’s Lead Assistant (the coach who assumes duties when Coach is unavailable) I believe this season it will be the 34 year old Luke Loucks. Jay Triano (65 y/o) is always looming and I think of him as a Tex Winter advisor to Mike Brown (a Senior Advisor)
thanks. Assistants are important. Shoot Micah Nori almost got famous last year and he was an assistant here
