Sacramento Kings acquiring Kessler Edwards from the Brooklyn Nets

This is a low risk, high upside trade.
By | 121 Comments | Feb 7, 2023

The Sacramento Kings have acquired Kessler Edwards from the Brooklyn Nets, as first reported by Sham Charania of The Athletic and confirmed by multiple sources.

James Ham adds that the Kings will waive Deonte Burton to create the open roster spot. Burton was on a 10-day deal with Sacramento.

Kessler Edwards fits into the Kings Traded Player Exception (TPE) that was created in the Marvin Bagley trade. That TPE was about to expire, but instead allows the Kings to acquire Edwards without sending back matching salary.

Edwards is 6’8″ small forward who has shown flashes of ability, but struggled to find a consistent role in Brooklyn. At just 22 years old, he still has plenty of upside, and is a great use of a TPE. The Kings will have a chance to look at a young player at a position of need while not losing any other assets as they approach the trade deadline.

Zero downside to this deal. The use it or lose it TPE was set to expire tomorrow. This is basically a free look for the Kings.

And he has a team option for next season, so he can spend a lot of time in the organization getting learned up the Mike Brown way.

The Haliburton TPE is what expires tomorrow. Bagley’s would have expired on Thur.

Still, it’s a small TPE that has little use except on the Kessler Edwards’ of the world. It’s what you do with the roster spot. I’ve got no issue with it.

I’m glad they did this today instead of Thur because they still have roster spots they could use to facilitate this deal.

Nice low key pickup by the Kings. I was a fan of Edwards back in the 2021 draft. Hope he can find his groove here in Sacramento.

he was Jalen Williams before Jalen Williams (Santa Clara/ OKC) – tall athletic guy from the WCC. He was from Pepperdine- picked 44th. No risk since he arrives under the MB3 money.
I know that none of you will recall but I did mention him as a potential trade target about 3 weeks ago.
I suspect something else in the works.

Very Interesting move! I like some of the clips from the draft process and what little I’ve seen on youtube over the past hour. Seems to be long, good shooter, with decent athleticism. Could be an upgrade over Ellis or Louis King from previous years.

What is more interesting…what it may mean in terms of future moves. Could this mean that Keon Ellis, Terrence Davis, or other SG/SF’s are going to be moved? Which ones and for what? Only time will tell but I can dig it.

Means that Monte has his eyes open wide- the Irving move just occurred and that propelled this one. Nets have Royce O’Neil and got Dorian F/S- Edwards same type of guy. So he became redundant. When he started -23 games- for the Nets, I saw potential.

I doubt this effects Keon Ellis, who I love. and who shoots better than Edwards.

Yes. Yes he is. He’s a two time all-defensive second team the last two seasons. Okpala is a defensive stopper in the minds of Kings fans, but not likely anywhere else.

If 2 seconds gets it done sure but I’m thinking a guy like Kessler could fill the void of a guard to fit in when needed if TD is required to make the trade happen. There’s also Keon Ellis.

Meh, I get that he’s a low risk/high reward prospect with a TO next year, but this move helps the Nets (saves them $8M in tax) more then the Kings. He’s not likely to be apart of the current rotation so the Kings basically got a guy to look at in practice while the Nets pick up the tab on his remaining salary this year. If he couldn’t get minutes on an injury riddled Nets team, I don’t think he gets minutes here.

IMO, the Kings could have at least received a future second for saving the Nets that kind of money and opening up a roster spot for them. The Spurs got a future second for saving the Heat tax dollars in the Dedmon deal.

Personally, I would have preferred to save that 10-day spot for something more impactful, like two role players for Holmes, but maybe there just isn’t anything out there on the horizon and this is the best Monte could do.

Can a TPE be combined with draft compensation?

Yes. In order to complete a trade, you have to actually. Technically, a TPE by itself cannot acquire a player. it’s only a monetary mechanism to make a trade work. You still have to trade draft rights (like the Kings ended up doing), draft picks or a player to the other team to get the league to approve it.

What you cannot do with a TPE is combine it with an existing player to acquire another player from another team. For instance, Richaun Holmes plus the Hali TPE set to expire is about 15.3M combined. However, the Kings cannot do that because you can’t combine exceptions to acquire players outside of a few specific cases. The good news is that you can still acquire a player making up to 16.3M because you can trade a salary in Richaun’s salary range for the salary + 5M.

It’s not called a soft salary cap for nuthin’…..

A couple of points –

Dedmon is completely washed. Kessler is at least a prospect.

Brooklyn’s 2nd round pick this year would be #54 at the moment. Trading for future 2nds beyond that is a big shrug of the shoulders for me.

I agree wholeheartedly that the trade is of the “meh” variety. But I’m sure not going to sweat some sort of future 2nd (many of which seem to come with protections these days).

The Kings had Marvin Bagley’s expiring TPE. They got Kessler Edwards out of it. Between the scale of nothing and Edwards plus a future 2nd, I call it a win. Not getting the 2nd in this deal is like getting a free ice cream cone and then complaining about the lack of sprinkles.

All fine, but it hints to me that nothing is coming down the pike in the next 48 hours. The Kings didn’t have to use that TPE and take up another roster spot. Put it this way, I’d be totally ok with kicking the tires on a prospect like Edwards…over the past couple of seasons.

This kind of move is what a building/lottery team does to “help out” a contender in hopes of finding a diamond in the rough. The Kings are using up a roster spot on a guy who may not even touch the court in the coming months. Why would a playoff hunting team do that?

It may all pan out and Monte’s a genius, but I’d prefer to see on the court improvement for this season as opposed to someone who may or may not take the insignificant minutes of KZ Okpala.

He’s a $1 dollar lottery scratcher that someone gives you.

So you’re ticked because this deal signals that there is not another deal coming? If they broker a better deal between now & the deadline they can waive him & nothing is lost.

This is a free look at a wing. I don’t see the issue. Then again, I like it when someone gives me a $1 lottery scratcher.

I get that he’s a $1 scratcher, but that’s the move a current OKC or Spurs team does. Why does the #3 team in the West clawing for a playoff spot do it? He’s not getting any kind of evaluation in the next 48 hours. Monte made this trade to see Edwards for the remainder of the season, thus taking up a roster spot going into the deadline.

Different perspective:

These Kings are playing with house money. They certainly aren’t Championship contenders and their bench is underwhelming.

Maybe they actually find value in Kessler Edwards. If you want to claim that he is on the third unit for the Brooklyn Nets and plays just 5.6 min/game this season- well, for the Steve Nash’ Nets he played over 20 min/game for a career average (last season, this season) of 17.2min/game.

This season, Matisse Thybulle is averaging 12 min/game after the 3 previous seasons at around 22 min/game.

Maybe Thybulle isn’t acquirable at the value McNair is pursuing and Kessler is and the differences are, stat-wise equivocal.

Lots of possibilities. For a guy who is likely going to be the 10th guy off the bench (after McGenius gets a back up for Domas) seems like an okay to me. The Kings are not making chess moves for a Championship run.

There is no risk, it’s just not improving the roster in the now.

You could say the exact same thing about acquiring a first-round draft selection.

The allure of the deadline is to see if anyone makes big moves ahead of the playoffs, but there’s no reason why longer-term moves can’t be made.

Consider that Monte and his scouting department along with Mike Brown and his coaching staff likely already know exactly what they are getting in Kessler. He’s not a mystery, especially to the professionals who get paid to do this. They likely see something in him. Maybe the conversation is “In our system I think he could thrive” or “if we can just work with him on this on facet of his game he could be an instant rotation player with maybe even more upside”

the guy started for more than half the season just one year ago. There’s a lot to go off of when taking this EXTREMELY LOW RISK MOVE.

Ballsy move by McNair, releasing a guy on a (check notes) ten-day contract to make room for Kessler.

As if Kessler can’t be waived if a spot needs to be opened to facilitate a trade.

You’re overcooking the shit out of this flyshit in the pepper big dog.

You can’t make a trade once the trade deadline comes. Once that comes, the only guaranteed way to shed Edwards’ salary is to waive him and hope someone picks him up.

It’s really not that serious. It’s not going to change anything for the Kings either way. I’d be pretty surprised if another move isn’t made. But it won’t be because of Kessler Edwards, it will be because the price to acquire players wasn’t a price that Monte McNair was willing to pay.

There was an open spot (Burton be gone) Another move may require opening up that spot by waiving Edwards or sending him to Stockton as has been suggested. Of another move may be 1 for 1 or 2 for 2.
For KG21- what did the Kings give up for him? You implied some form of draft rights deal.

Huh? The Nets traded him to avoid the tax. They would not have avoided the tax had they waived him.

That was my point. They obviously moved him to avoid the tax, so why did agree to go to the Kings if there were any possibility of him being cut here?

one good turn begets another?

In a League of 30 GMs, it’s not too far a stretch to help a fellow team avoid The Tax.

Exactly this could even be an advance move that leads to a deal involving the Nets and Kings again. “We’ll take Edwards and save you 8 million and then we take this guy in the three team trade”

it’s possible.

I should clarify, I feel Edwards agreed to the trade because he had assurances from the Kings that they aren’t going to cut him in the next 48 hours. They are going to give him a good look…which is totally fine, but I don’t think it moves any needle to the current rotation or push to the playoffs.

That’s my only pause to this. Why use a roster spot on a guy, 48 hours before the deadline, when you are giving it everything to make the playoffs, only to see if you want him around next season?

If Monte sees some long goal objectivity to it, then great! I just don’t see the need right now.

You need to take this off the stove, buddy. You are overcookin’ the livin’ shit out of it.

Cost the Kings nothing.

Free look at a prospect at a position of need.

Does not hamstring the Kings in any way, shape or form.

Could very well be. I tend to over analyze every move because I’d imagine that’s what Monte is doing.

My honest opinion…Monte sees something in Edwards and want’s a good long evaluation of him. I just don’t like it happening right now when the Kings are at the precipice of breaking playoff curse and there are bigger holes to fill.

and the Kings are “in between”- a recent lottery team and an aspiring playoff team- this is an in between move. Yes, it is the type of move that a lottery team makes but this is not the Nuggets here.

Honestly. McNair took an expiring nothing, and turned it into something at zero cost.

Now, this particular something may not turn out to be anything, but even so, there’s not a single reason not to do this deal.

Only a something if he does something for the team. Otherwise it is nothing for nothing.

No harm no foul at this point.

I feel that cash considerations should result in free beers or snacks in G1 until the amount of the cash considerations is spent.

After two decades of historical shit drafts and trades….overall shit roster construction……cash considerations should belong to the fans.

And incredibly over priced beer. This should be brought to the attention of the Players Association in their negotiations with owners and management to offset something or other. All cash considerations received in trades shall result in $5.00 beer at all NBA arenas until said cash considerations have been spent in beer price offsets.

I would vote for that. I might even stand in front of Safeway for an hour collecting signatures to get it on the ballot.

Brilliant idea ABB.

$5.00 beer everywhere except G1. Free at G1 because they own the record for most seasons without any playoffs.

Make it a punishment for the team that owns that record.

Whoa, that’s quite a chunk of change Brooklyn sent. It makes sense since it saved them $8m in tax, so they still save over $5M overall.

So here’s why SA took on a 2nd rd pick for Dedmon and Sac didnt: Dedmon isnt worth the roster spot. Edwards is.

That’s just my read on things. But…I mean….a free 2M? You do that if you’re Monte. Especially if you like Edwards.

Agreed. Had I know he was coming with that kind of change yesterday, My concerns over the trade would have vanished. It’s a no brainer with that kind of money. I feel like cash considerations is normally a few hundred grand or so. I don’t believe I’ve seen that kind of payment before.

That’s what happens when you get a good young prospect with a good deal on the backside and you’re saving a team with a hefty tax payment a decent chunk of that.

Had I seen Bobby’s tweets on this, I would have linked them yesterday. I feel like half of the amusement of this thread would have disappeared, though. Ain’t gonna lie! LOL

I’ll add, one nice thing about that kind of money coming back is that it would make it a whole lot cheaper to cut/buyout a guy like Len. It now costs the Kings very little and that roster spot then opens back up before tomorrow. The trade would basically boil down to Edwards for Len (or whoever they cut at the end of salary charts). That’s 100% a win.

I figured you’d know, so let me ask: I’d not have thought that second-rounders would have anything as plush as a no-trade clause in their contracts. Is this more common than I’d have guessed?

Yep. It’s standard. Anytime there’s a situation (players signed to a Qualifying Offer apply here as well) where a player could lose their Bird or early Bird rights, they have a limited no trade clause. It happens where a player in Edwards’ situation gets traded and consent from the player to make the trade is required.

Edwards obviously liked what he heard from the Kings.

Monte: “So we’re the 3rd seed with a healthy young core competing for the playoffs…”

Edwards: “Ok, is there anything else?”

Monte: “We, uhh, we have a huge ass laser beam-”

Edwards: “Say no more, I’ll be there on the morrow.”

I’d assume the cash sent in the trade from Brooklyn covers most, if not all of Kessler’s remaining salary for the year.
