The season is over so now we have some clarity on where the Kings might end up picking. The Kings beat the Rockets on Wednesday while the Bulls lost to the Pistons, leaving both teams tied at 27-55. So what happens in a tie?
The 6th slot normally gets 63 combinations while the 7th slot normally gets 43. In this case, both teams split the combinations evenly to get 53 each. That leaves both teams with an 18.3% chance to jump into the top 3 (5.3% for #1, 6.0% to #2 and 7.0% to #3).
Soon, the Kings and Bulls will have a coin flipped by the NBA to determine whether they are 6 or 7 in the draft lottery. The winner is placed 6th and the loser is slotted 7th. In the second round, the loser of that coin toss gets the better pick. This scenario is not new for the Kings, as in 2016 they finished tied with the Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks and won the coin toss there.
The Phoenix Suns finished with the best odds for the #1 pick, followed by the Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic. The NBA lottery will be held just over a month from now on May 15th in Chicago.
