Precious Achiuwa is coming back to the Sacramento Kings next season, according to a report from Chris Haynes.

Back in April, both Achiuwa and general manager Scott Perry expressed interest in a deal getting done. He averaged 10 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists in 23 minutes per game for the Kings last season. The 6’8” forward, who turns 27 in September, provided solid minutes throughout the season and brings the type of energy and defensive tenacity that is always a good complement to a team as a role player.
I am pleased to hear this.
He is both likable and useful as a player, and seems like a very fungible trade piece as well.

He is a good looking man, but maybe we should be talking about his contract and fit rather than focusing on his looks.

Skills are adequate, and at times well done. I liked his decision making best and I feel bringing him back is a solid move.
We never got to see healthy Keegan at all last season, but Keegs at the 3, Precious at the 4, healthy Domas (doubtful Duren) at the 5 with Acuff and Lavine in the backcourt should be “not bad, not bad at all” (I did not say good, just to be clear). If you substitute Duren, the defense goes up but the offense goes down. If it’s Poetl, the defense remains up (like Duren) but availability goes way down. What type of team do you all want to see?
Hunter, Clifford, Karaban and Monk, Sharp off the bench. It sounds more interesting than last season. But that is saying very little.

A team that can win sustainably, make deep playoff runs, and win a title. I doubt that will be done in Sacramento during my lifetime.
All joking aside, I like defense. Defensive stops are as exciting to me as a nice assist, highlight dunk, big 3pt make, etc. That means LaVine needs to go, but we all know he will be here all season.
For the center position, Domas and LaVine don’t work together. So one has to go. It will most likely be Domas this offseason, I think. Rather have Duren than Poeltl.
Sorry, but any team starting Precious at the 4 is not a serious franchise.
In any Domas trade, they need to get a SF/PF or 3/4, or whatever term is used now, back in return. Preferably a a bigger guy, like 6’9+. I don’t think Max is a 4, which means he should be splitting time with Cardwell at the 5.
Thus my not bad, not bad at all label. I don’t expect Sac, even with Duren, to break 30 wins with Coach Doug and Zach/DeRozan/Westbrook (one or all).
But…it’s progress and the kindling for a bigger flame.
Max is just as much a 4 as Precious is. He stretches the floor better as well. They also have Hunter.
And Duren off the market (apparently).

I think the thing that Klam linked means they will match any max offer in free agency, which is significantly less than what max offer he may want from Detroit, since they can pay more. That’s where the hangup is.
As to Domas, my chips are still on Charlotte. He’d fit so well next to Naz.
Both options aren’t good with the current roster.
I see him as an adequate 4th big. Absent of any trades, give me Domas and Max in the starting lineup (yes, there will be issues, but there is not a permutation of this roster that does not). Keegan at the 3. Hunter the first one off the bench with Keegan to the 4. Precious behind that. Max can toggle between the 4 and backing Domas at the 5, with Cardwell sprinkled in.

But I agree with you – if they think they’ve signed their starting power forward for the next two seasons, that’s…that’s just not who Precious is.
At least they didn’t wildly overpay to keep him.
Remember…our bar as Kangz fans right now isn’t for this team to build a winner. it’s for them to stop doing incredibly stupid things.
And that bar has at least been cleared here. This isn’t an incredibly stupid signing (Westbrook), or an okay signing for an incredibly stupid amount of money (Schroder).
It’s a signing for a decent backup power forward at a reasonable amount of money.
Sad that this is where the bar actually is for this organization, though.

Does this team really need Jason Thompson 2.0? Seriously, go look at at JT’s numbers when he was 26 and with the Kings. Compare those numbers to what Precious put up last season at the age of 26.

A funny thing about this, the Carter trade and Hayes cut got the Kings below the 1st apron AND tax line. This contract would put them back above the tax and just $1.5M below the 1st apron.
They still have use of the MLE and BAE (which Rob mentioned is probably being used on Precious) but that DDR hammer still has to drop if this team is to stay below the first apron this summer.
Simply put, if they don’t cut or move off of DDR soon, the next signing puts them back into the apron. FWIW, teams can’t execute a S&T (Duren?) if they are above the apron.

Jason Thompson was an NBA role player. A team needs 15 NBA players on the roster. At less than $6M per year, it isn’t a bad signing. It isn’t franchise changing, it’s a roster spot filled by a decent NBA player at a decent price.
Both are role players on 30 win teams. That ain’t saying much. I get that teams need to fill out roster, but teams living at the apron can’t overpay for dudes. Just give him the vet minimum or kick the tires on some undrafted guys like Cardwell was, instead of potentially wasting the BAE.
Also, FWIW, you can fit two undrafted contracts and it’s even possible for fit 2 vet minimum deals into what the Kings gave Precious.
I get we are splitting hairs here on end of the bench dudes, but I just feel this team needs to hunt for some diamonds rather than polishing some granite.

I understand this logic but I don’t really care that much. Next year will be a crap year from a W-L perspective so there is some logic to kicking the tires or offering a vet minimum to fill roster spots. The big moves or non-moves will be what they do with Domas and/or LaVine. What they have to give up or get in return for those two players are what may have the longest term impact. These guys are good (not max) talent on max deals for a bad team. If the Kings can clear cap space and/or get younger, that’s going to be the story line I’m looking for. I won’t be surprised to see both back in Kings uniforms to start the season though. They may just let LaVine expire. Domas may still have several years left in him and I can see a world where they still build around him if they can’t get a deal that makes sense.
This is where I am at. JT, Trey Lyles, Precious, Ty Corbin, Lawrence Funderburke, and on and on and on. The rate and term is fine. He is neither problem or solution.

I’ve watched almost every Kings game since 1986 and Jason Thompson is my least favorite King of all time. One of many Kings who somehow started here but was not allowed to touch the floor on other teams. Precious deserves an apology!

The problem ain’t Achiuwa and how it effects the salary cap, lux tax, first apron or second apron. They are paying Precious 11% of what they are paying Zach Lavine.
He’s a solid piece and he likely makes it easier for Coach Doug on the court, and at the negotiating table to try and find warm bodies for SPSP and BJ Armstrong.
Lavine + Sabonis + DeRozan + Hunter + Monk + Murray = $189M. That’s your problem. Not $5.2M for Precious Achiuwa. Which one of those is a better value than Precious on this 60 loss team?
The amazing thing with the Kings isn’t just the ineptness. It’s the ineptness combined with a solid 40-year run of bad luck, bad timing and unfortunate circumstances.
Monk is just the most recent one.
That contract wasn’t horrible when he signed it. It wasn’t great, mind you. But it wasn’t the albatross at the time that it has since become.
But between coaching changes that pulled him out of what he does best, a decline in performance, and a change to the NBA’s financial structure that suddenly made his contract look horrible for a 6th man, and the Kings just can’t win – even when they kinda sorta don’t kick themselves in the balls.
I like this re-signing. He always looks like he’s putting forth 100% effort.

$9M per is not insignificant for a solid role player. Also, Marco Belinelli netted the Kings a first round pick while Isaiah Thomas landed Sac a box of rocks. There is no ironclad standard.

Precious at least gives it his all. Lavine should just be benched if we can’t dump him. If i had to choose between him and Domas it’s Domas all day! Can’t fault his effort and gets others involved. Lavine can only do Iso ball and nothing else. Unfortunately he has ZERO trade value.
Good. I have been wanting that with about 20 games left in the seasons, that is, after we got a good look at him. He is willing to mix it up physically and is a decent defender and a versatile scorer around the rim.
No teams want the Kings players and/or contracts, unless the Kings attach picks, which they won’t do.
So that means Zach will stay on the team this season. Domas will be here probably until next offseason. Monk will have a roster spot and probably have his role bounce around from 6th man to DNP-CD throughout the year.
The only relevant move that I can see happening is DDR being waived/stretched. That’s your Sacramento offseason. Fun times!
