The rumors are officially true. Fred Katz of the Athletic reports that Dennis Schröder has agreed to sign with the Kings to become Sacramento’s newest starting Point Guard. Terms of the deal have yet to be announced but it’s rumored to be for two-years at the Mid-Level Exception which would make it $28 million. Schröder joins the Kings after a tumultuous year that saw him play for three teams: Brooklyn, Golden State and Detroit.
Schröder, a 6’1 Point Guard from Germany, is entering his 13th season in the league. Schröder has career averages of 13.9 points, 4.9 assists and 2.9 rebounds a game. He’s been known more for his scoring than playmaking throughout his career, but he’s a capable enough lead guard. He has mostly come off the bench throughout his career, but has had successful stints as a starter both earlier in his career with Atlanta and even more recently in Brooklyn, where he averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists on good efficiency for the 23 games he was there to start last season.
This is clearly not a long term solution for the Kings but it does at least temporarily fix one of Sacramento’s biggest roster deficiencies. The Kings struggled last season after the De’Aaron Fox trade with no real lead guard. Malik Monk and Zach LaVine are both more natural scorers, rookie Devin Carter wasn’t ready, and Keon Ellis is more of an off-ball player than primary initiator. Schröder should hopefully bring the Kings a little more reliability on the front while also still being able to play off ball at times. He also has a reputation as a solid defender with his quickness and 6’8 wingspan.
The Kings may not be finished adding to their backcourt just yet. They are also reportedly meeting with veterans Russell Westbrook and Malcolm Brogdon. They still have to figure out what do at the wing as well, especially with Jake LaRavia leaving.
Happy to at least have ONE actual point guard.
Gotta look at trade options to pull in someone younger & with higher ceiling for the long term.
If it’s for the full MLE, we are fucking stupid.
On the plus side. He did nut punch Cuz that one time.
What’s the problem? If you’re not going to tear it down, this is a good signing. Schroeder is a solid player with ice in his veins. Always like watching him play. The team is going nowhere but again it’s a good signing if you’re not tearing it down. The second year should have been a team option,
Signing Schroder does not fit your screen name.
Reposting from the other thread:
“Dude, you are fine with the Schroder signing, don’t want to pay Keon, and now want to trade Keegan? I’m at a loss.”
You obviously purposely misinterpreted my post. IF YOUR NOT GOING TO TEAR IT DOWN, this is a good signing. As I’ve said a million times the right course of action is a complete rebuild.
Do you understand now or maybe you understood from the beginning.
But, you said you prefer to trade Keegan. If the Kings are NOT GOING TO TEAR IT DOWN and going all in with Schroder, why would you want to trade Keegan?
Your words from the last thread, my man. How does being fine with the signing and saying that jive? I’m totally fine with a rebuild, and I know you are too, so I just can’t wrap my head around this.
You: Let’s tear it down.
Me: I’m on board with that.
You: Schroder is a good signing if they aren’t going to tear it down.
Me: Uhhh, I’m not sure about that.
You: Now trade Keegan for a pick and youth.
Me: Huh?
I’m not trying to be snarky, I just don’t understand.
YES. Trade Keegan as part of a tear down. Do it while his value is at a peak. Don’t pay him a max contract. He’s the 4th or 5th option on a championship competitive team. They won’t win with this strategy but if this is there strategy Schroeder is not a bad signing. Disparage him all you want but this dude has played a lot of crunch time minutes in his career and has performed.
Who is saying Keegan should get a max contact? That’s in your head.
Yes! What is wrong with that? Why trade him??? You keep him for a team that you want to be competitive.
Yet you praise how OKC has done things. They drafted well and kept their assets on cheap controlled deals. That’s what the Kings have potentially in Keegan and Keon!!
You completely lose me when you disparage Keegan and Keon but now give props to Schroder, who’s now on his 10th team. Sorry, but this is illogical.
Let’s switch names. Because this isn’t how you rebuild. My name is a mockery of the franchise.
I must ask: Has anyone affiliated with the organization stated that rebuilding is the current plan?
Of course not. And you know that’s not what I said. You’re looking to make false controversy.
Play-in here we come!
I can’t wait to win 36 games next year!! Purgatory and it feels so gooooood!!!
Not an all-star, but more than competent until the point guard of the future (PGOTF) arrives. I’d have felt better about it if he wasn’t getting the full fourteen mil, but when you need a player at a position, it usually costs ya.
Stupid fucking team. This is why you get trashed by the league and many hate you. You just keep making stupid fucking moves.
You suck ass. You have no money or cap. You need to trade 4 guys for expiring and a pick (just fucking trade LaVine for Beal and buy out Beal and tank). This team won’t win and they may as well fucking tank.
You drafted Carter last year. You have Clifford amd Maxime. Why the fuck are you sticking with vets that will only hinder player development?
Shit like this is why I wished this team DIED IN 2012! I FUCKING HATE THIS TEAM!!! STUPID! STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!
lol let it all out I’m here for you bro
At least you’re taking it well.
Trade Lavine for Beal? This must be a PHX burner account
I’m feeling these vibes. I was born in OK and if we lose Keon for Schroeder I’m going to just bail until vivek is out
Get ready, that’s what is happening
This is like going to McDonald’s and complaining about the food being of low quality.
One of the worst NBA ownerships in history didn’t improve just because it’s the off-season.
Yeah at this point it just “is”.
Then get rid of the fucking team. Leave Sac for impossible levels of incompetence. I got back on because of Raynaud but now I am spiteful enough that I hope they lose him because the Kings will waste him. Pacers should have picked him. They made a mistake but Kam Jones isn’t bad. Pacers can develop players and be fun to watch unlike the fucKINGS.
Sonics fans say hi
When the fries and McNuggets are hot and fresh they are quite delightful.
You know recently I got turned on to their vanilla cones after a 40 year absence, and I must admit, after a long ride they are quite delicious.
Why isn’t this green’d yet?
Good player and a veteran at a massive position of need. Talent plus need usually equals at least a good fit. Now, bombs away on a DDR or Lavine trade. Or both.
…and you thought the Sloppy Seconds Veteran period had come to an end. 🙂
Seconds? The Kings will be Schroder’s 10th team. 😉
Second tier FA.
Were we in the running for a first tier one? At least Doug can start a PG who isn’t Monk or Fultz.
Welcome to Basketball Hell Herr Schroder.

Can someone translate what he’s getting at here? Is Schroeder not officially signed because there’s a contingency?
No clue. I’m guessing other working parts?
He is to be traded to the Lakers for Jake LaRavia.
Maybe there is a sign & trade being worked on with Dennis? Kings adding players and teams to the deal?
As Homer said:
Herzlich wilkommen an einen hoffnungslos Mannschaft. Viel Gluck!
Cole Anthony would of been better
Please tell me he’s going to be number Nein(9).
37% FG with the warriors 32% from 3
37% FG with the pistons 30% from 3
Empty stats with the nets
They could have signed Westbrook at this point. He would at least show up for us every game and bring vocal leadership and toughness something we haven’t had since the glory days, I’m guessing, was not old enough to watch them lol . Since I been a fan, we’ve yet to have a franchise player who’s a true leader and can command the locker room. That’s why we suck.
We are now at the Luka Garza signing of free agency and the Kings still have roster spots to fill up.
Atlanta just traded for Alexander-Walker, so maybe they’re looking to trade one of their wings?
I still think Derozan for PJ Washington and Naji Marshall makes sense.
For everyone but the Mavericks.
We’d have to add more than that. I don’t want to give away any FRPs for the next decade. It’s really the best shot the Kings have to get talent.
Love what the Hawks are doing, Just not sure Tre can lead them to the promise land.
Tyus jones for 1/7 >>>>>>>>> Schroeder at 2/20+
Modern day Darren Collison.
Are they also going for a Ty Lawson or Jordan Farmar too?
I raise you one Corey Joseph and double down on Rajon Rondo.
Beno?
Ramon Sessions and Aaron Brooks would like a word with you.
Holy fuck, there are so many of them.
Anthony Johnson, Jason Hart, Randy Brown.
Frank Mason, Kyle Guy
Grieves Vasquez has entered the chat
Who did you expect them to get SGA.
Darren Collison
First head scratching move. All this talk about defensive 2 way guys… making the team look like the pacers or thunder and you do this??? Loved the draft but this goes against the grain completely. It also goes against their young player development. By the time we get rid of these old guys, our young players will not be the young anymore.
Hopefully we have a bunch more moves or trades or wake me up in 2 years, when after not making the playoffs the rebuild finally begins.
We just lost one of our 2 way guys in Keon so we could sign an aging alleged PG in Schroder. This is the price of refusing to do a tear down. The Kings told Keon he isn’t part of the team’s future. Building a play in team around mediocre veterans other teams don’t want is the strategy. Would love to see Keon end up in Denver.
This kind of zero upside overpay is a perfect example of why our franchise is a dumpster fire.
Plus we might lose keon because of it, stellar move
You act like Keon is Scottie Pippen. It’s possible all these guys including Schroeder get moved at the trade deadline when reality hits they can’t win with just a few tweeks.
Everything is possible! That’s what’s magical about the offseason.
Actually not bad, it’ll be a tradeable contract.
Yes – and they probably will.
If the goal is to get a Top 5 pick, this is a great signing. How vsluable is he? Dennis played for 3 teams least year. If the goal is playoffs, this is a typical Kings blunder.
It’s stupid regardless. You don’t have to pay a guy $10 million plus to get a top 5 pick. Just start Devin Carter to do that.
But Stupid things are what the Kings are experts at
Uhhh Schroeder is a nice piece off the bench on a contending team. Don’t knock his ability. The guy continues to have a nice career. Again this is not the route I want but he can play.
Is this the only thing this group talks about?
BBQ rib recipes are in the other thread, but it can get too spicy for some.
People get a bit too saucy at times on the site.
Folks have definitely been rubbed the wrong way.
Of course they do. This owner treats this team like his ego toy and in turn treats fans like shit.
Why people have a problem with people on this site pointing out the shit is beyond me.
I mean, I saw a shit ton of positive posts about the draft picks.
The Kings? On a Kings site? Or do you mean the Kings ineptitude?
Either way, what else should we talk about? The good moves? The good/smart owner? Kinda hard to discuss things that don’t explain at.
Im a tank guy at this point but I realize Vivek won’t ever allow that. On its face, maybe a slight overpay but need to see what other moves there are to actually signal a real direction. Schroeder hasn’t been on many great teams lately and maybe he’s just a quiet tank to silence Vivek. Im hoping they bring the suck and not fiddle with mediocrity for middling picks.
Awesome! We got Dennis the Menace to go along with the rest of this comic strip franchise.
He’s an accomplished basketball player. Don’t knock him because he’s not the right player for the Kings. If you think he’s a comic strip character you haven’t seen him play.
Since we don’t yet know what the deal cost, let’s just recap what other FA PGs got:
Jones: 1yr/7M from Orlando
Jerome: 3yr/28M from Memphis
Russell: 2yr/12M from Dallas
Judging by the above, fair value would be right around here, 6-9M per year right?
Good luck with that haha
Any thoughts on trying to get Cam Whitmore? Seems like Houston needs (wants) to move him. 2 years left on lower end rookie deal. He’s not even 21 yet, younger than a lot of guys drafted last week. Clearly Udoka doesn’t want much to do with him…and maybe there is good reason for that. He has some deficiencies, but he has the size and athletic ability to become a real player.
Seems like the type of relatively low cost swings/potential the Kings should be taking. He could play off the bench consistently or shift to more minutes as larger contracts potentially make their way out. Would have a year or 2 to see what you got.
I still remember Whitmore falling in the draft and hoping MM would trade up for him. Instead MM stood pat and traded the pick to DAL. Kangz.
How about Carter for Whitmore? Money works.
I would much rather go for Whitmore than Kuminga, especially considering the salaries.
Clarkson signing with the Knicks.
They needed another perimeter bucket getter to take some of the load off JB.
I’d say the Knicks are the faves in the East heading into next szn with JT, Hali and Dame out.
Not if they hire Mike Brown to be their head coach.
They really need to make amends with Thibs lol
I’m checking out of this shit show if the Kings trade Monk for Dennis Schröder straight up. That’s garbage.
Hey. We might get some cash considerations out of it. You gotta have cash considerations.
Yeah, I had seen some rumors on BlueSky regarding Monk. Dunno how much truth there is to it, but I guess we’ll see….
https://bsky.app/profile/fantasynbanews.bsky.social/post/3lsupkxzlwc2s
They are the same player…

1000%, but just a bit more traditional PR out of Schroeder. Better defender. Get out of the last year Monks player option at 21M, which feels like a possible pick up depending on how things go for him. Plus save 4-6 million on cap each of next 2 years. Could be important for resigning Keon or someone else. Think it makes negligible difference on win total next two years. Possible positive (if that’s even a good thing)
At first I was WTF, but thinking about it it makes a lot of sense. Clears some log jam for Keon to play since he isn’t a true point.
Yes, trading Monk so that Keon can get more playing team to be developed for teams to sign him after the end of season would be such a Kangz move
I don’t hate the move. Better than Westbrick or the two Pats: Beverly and Mills. Wish he could’ve been a little cheaper. Time to get whatever you can for DDR, Monk, and JV. Wings, more long wings.
Problem Is, they might get Westbrook too. Fun.
They should given what they are trying to do.
Westbrick as you call him will be in the hall of fame and a former MVP. It wasn’t too long ago when he practically carried the Wizards to the playoffs and I think he was in the top 10 of MVP voting.
Is this the next incarnation of Beno Udrih?
Or Darren Collison?
Or Darren Collison. Or Ty Lawson. Or aged out Rajon Rondo.
Or Darren Collison!
Sac: Schroder / Westbrook / Carter
SA: Fox / Castle / Harper
????????????
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.
So I’m seeing some interwebs stuff that says the reason why this Schroder signing isn’t a done deal is because it may be a S&T with Monk?
I’m really not a fan of adding Schroder, but I can rationalize a swap for Monk. To me, the two are damn near the same. Why have both?
Does this indeed involve a trade of Monk? Just ridiculously horrible if that’s the case.
Monk is an asset to be used to get something worthwhile.
A joke if true
How is Monk more of an asset than Schroder? I’ll give you age, but if Dennis comes cheaper, how is their value different.
If this is essentially a Schroder for Monk trade, than that optimism and benefit of the doubt position I have taken regarding Perry is already gone and I’m done.
They are not the same much different skill sets.
How so?
Dennis assists better, but turns the ball over more. Monk shoots better but defends worse.
HERE is their career comparison. How does one offset the other. A straight swap is negligible, IMO. Kings need a PG and Dennis is marginally better at that. Maybe it comes down to contracts? A straight swap really doesn’t affet the W/L column.
Just a pointless, awful signing. Overpaying for middling vets to chase 41 wins is just…why? Monk is better than Schroeder (not as a point guard, but otherwise) and four years younger. A sign and trade makes this worse, not better.
I haven’t paid attention to the other bottom feeder teams, but on a talent basis, this is not currently a play in team.
Thank you. The signing was bad enough but to then give them monk for nothing is so unbelievably stupid. No one was going to pay Shroeder 14 million a year. Let alone 2 years of it. And spare me the Collison comparisons. Check the stats. Collison was not good but he was much better than Shroeder. This is why this team cant have nice things. What a joke. Looking forward to Shroeder grifting fouls and launching 3’s at 30 percent a clip. Scot is giving off Pete vibes
You know nothing about Schroeders game. He can play.
I’ve watched enough of his game to know he isn’t worth 28 million for 2 years. Who was going to pay him that much? Why be in such a hurry to lock down a player that doesnt have a market? Even if you did insist on signing one of these shitty pg’s would it have made that much of a difference if it was Jones for only 1 year and 7 mill? All of the other garbage pg’s in his tier are making half what we’re paying Shroeder. It was a dumb move.
Does the 4 years younger even really matte?. Are either of these guys going to be on the next iteration of a even decent Kings team? Feels unlikely.
I think they are similar like Adam, but even if Schroeder slightly worse, he might be a slightly better fit for what they need and more importantly you get out of the last year of Monk’s contract for around 20M
More guys get better at 28 than at 32
Guys rarely get a lot better at 28, in the league for 9 years. Not impossible, but goes against history. He is what he is, this is Monk’s prime…which is maybe a 10% better Schroeder. Worth clearing a little bit of cap and definitely clearing 20M in year 3. Neither one are helping the Kings win 45+ this year.
Monk has actually declined for 3 straight years, but none of that matters. Neither Monk or Schroder are moving the needle for the Kings next season, unless you consider 41 wins are considerably better than 40 wins.
Everything matters!
Monk has actually declined for 3 straight years, but none of that matters. Neither Monk or Schroder are moving the needle for the Kings next season, unless you consider 41 wins are considerably better than 40 wins.
Nothing matters.
“I think they are similar like Adam, but even if Schroeder slightly worse, he might be a slightly better fit for what they need and more importantly you get out of the last year of Monk’s contract for around 20M.”
And this is the only way to do that? Maybe the only way that cuts payroll for the owners.
-Well it’s one way potentially and has some benefits if swapping similar players. I just think it’s fairly likely 2 years from now if Monk isn’t moved this site will be having a discussion about hoping that Monk doesn’t opt in to 21M in 2027-28. This gets a similar player, although shifting ball handling roles a bit and hopefully opening more minutes for Keon.
I don’t think Monk has some great value. You aren’t getting a decent first for him…maybe a 20s first from some team. Your aren’t getting a valuable wing.
I like Malik, I’ve cheered for him…but he is a fairly one dimensional offensive minded guard off the bench. He had his chance at the car keys last year and I think he proved he is not a quality starter. Nothing wrong with that. There’s lots of dudes kind of like him…Jordan Clarkson, Ty Jerome, Buddy Hield, Dennis Schroeder, Payton Pritchard, TJ McConnell. Malik is probably better than some of those guys. Worse than others. You know what none of those guys do though? They don’t make 19-21 million like Malik for the next 3 years. Most are getting 1/2 that or less.
Paying guys like that 20 million is in an inefficiency. It’s like RB’s in football. You can find one dimensional scoring guards in the late first and second round reasonably enough.
I have no idea if the goal is to cut payroll for ownership…but this would provide a bit more flexibility now and in the future, without a major downside in talent in the short and long term. I’m also for moves that open up minutes for Keon at this point, just for the simple fact that every single flipping line up he plays in has a positive net rating and sometimes a massive one.
Will there be a next iteration of a decent Kings team?
Unlikely with these owners
I’m sure there will be…whether I’m alive to see it or not is a different question
Chasing a 41 win season is the point. No need to disparage Schroeder is an accomplished player.
Monk one of the few players left on the team i enjoy watching so fully expecting them to do this sign and trade rumor.
I hate this team.
I was so annoyed listening to the radio today and everyone trying to shovel this shit out to the masses. Now that they are also giving away Monk for nothing I cant wait to hear the justification tomorrow. I see Barley is already sweeping for the Kings. Making business decisions. Thats some shameful shit
Hopefully Perry get at least some assets for Monk. It can’t be straight up trade. If so, Perry is already in Vivwreck world.
So are Matt George and Kenny Caraway.
Gotta build around Zach, an order straight from the top.
From that perspective, Monk is reduced to being someone competing with Zach for shots, and we can’t have that.
This team is going to be horrifically bad this season.
It sounds like Perry is (understandably) not a fan of Zach & doesn’t want to re-sign him once his contract ends.
Why is everyone so adamant that we need a point guard?
For what exactly? Reaching 37 wins? Why?
For an offensive identity which consists of DDR and LaVine chucking up shots? Or handing it to Domas in the high post?
For developing young players? Which ones? These two mid older rookies that have a minor shot at staying on a roster of a competent team?
Imponderables, to be sure
I mean, it’s hard to argue with this. Just sayin’.
https://giphy.com/gifs/pokemon-omega-ruby-alpha-sapphire-Iyc2wjiZ5ruRjxsKKJ
Should have just gotten Collin Sexton for peanuts
Kangz: masters of the middy…mid AF moves…whoooooo cares, we suck and this doesn’t stimulate me in any way. 0% looking forward to next year’s squad…just sayin
It doesn’t really matter, it’s not going to make anybody feel any better.
