Report: Kings sign Dennis Schröder

Meet your new starting PG.
By | 215 Comments | Jun 30, 2025

The rumors are officially true.  Fred Katz of the Athletic reports that Dennis Schröder has agreed to sign with the Kings to become Sacramento’s newest starting Point Guard.  Terms of the deal have yet to be announced but it’s rumored to be for two-years at the Mid-Level Exception which would make it $28 million.  Schröder joins the Kings after a tumultuous year that saw him play for three teams: Brooklyn, Golden State and Detroit.

Schröder, a 6’1 Point Guard from Germany, is entering his 13th season in the league.  Schröder has career averages of 13.9 points, 4.9 assists and 2.9 rebounds a game.  He’s been known more for his scoring than playmaking throughout his career, but he’s a capable enough lead guard.  He has mostly come off the bench throughout his career, but has had successful stints as a starter both earlier in his career with Atlanta and even more recently in Brooklyn, where he averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists on good efficiency for the 23 games he was there to start last season.

This is clearly not a long term solution for the Kings but it does at least temporarily fix one of Sacramento’s biggest roster deficiencies.  The Kings struggled last season after the De’Aaron Fox trade with no real lead guard.  Malik Monk and Zach LaVine are both more natural scorers, rookie Devin Carter wasn’t ready, and Keon Ellis is more of an off-ball player than primary initiator. Schröder should hopefully bring the Kings a little more reliability on the front while also still being able to play off ball at times.  He also has a reputation as a solid defender with his quickness and 6’8 wingspan.

The Kings may not be finished adding to their backcourt just yet.  They are also reportedly meeting with veterans Russell Westbrook and Malcolm Brogdon.  They still have to figure out what do at the wing as well, especially with Jake LaRavia leaving.

Happy to at least have ONE actual point guard.

Gotta look at trade options to pull in someone younger & with higher ceiling for the long term.

What’s the problem? If you’re not going to tear it down, this is a good signing. Schroeder is a solid player with ice in his veins. Always like watching him play. The team is going nowhere but again it’s a good signing if you’re not tearing it down. The second year should have been a team option,

Signing Schroder does not fit your screen name.

Reposting from the other thread:

“Dude, you are fine with the Schroder signing, don’t want to pay Keon, and now want to trade Keegan? I’m at a loss.”

You obviously purposely misinterpreted my post. IF YOUR NOT GOING TO TEAR IT DOWN, this is a good signing. As I’ve said a million times the right course of action is a complete rebuild.

Do you understand now or maybe you understood from the beginning.

But, you said you prefer to trade Keegan. If the Kings are NOT GOING TO TEAR IT DOWN and going all in with Schroder, why would you want to trade Keegan?

so with that said, I think it’s time to move Murray while you can get something for him. Hopefully a nice upper end first round pick along with a young prospect.

Your words from the last thread, my man. How does being fine with the signing and saying that jive? I’m totally fine with a rebuild, and I know you are too, so I just can’t wrap my head around this.

You: Let’s tear it down.

Me: I’m on board with that.

You: Schroder is a good signing if they aren’t going to tear it down.

Me: Uhhh, I’m not sure about that.

You: Now trade Keegan for a pick and youth.

Me: Huh?

I’m not trying to be snarky, I just don’t understand.

YES. Trade Keegan as part of a tear down. Do it while his value is at a peak. Don’t pay him a max contract. He’s the 4th or 5th option on a championship competitive team. They won’t win with this strategy but if this is there strategy Schroeder is not a bad signing. Disparage him all you want but this dude has played a lot of crunch time minutes in his career and has performed.

Who is saying Keegan should get a max contact? That’s in your head.

He’s the 4th or 5th option on a championship competitive team.

Yes! What is wrong with that? Why trade him??? You keep him for a team that you want to be competitive.

They won’t win with this strategy

Yet you praise how OKC has done things. They drafted well and kept their assets on cheap controlled deals. That’s what the Kings have potentially in Keegan and Keon!!

comment image

You completely lose me when you disparage Keegan and Keon but now give props to Schroder, who’s now on his 10th team. Sorry, but this is illogical.

————————————————————————
theres nothing wrong with securing Keagan but at the right price. His value to a championship competitive team would be similar to Dork’s value on OKC. Dork is making about $17 mil a year. So if I can get Keagan around that which I don’t think he will accept then that’s a good signing.

I don’t however want to sign him to a long term max contract and then possibly have another bad contract around our necks. If we can get a couple of first rounders for him or a first rounder and a good prospect like some of the players mentioned, I might take that instead of being faced with overpaying him or losing him for nothing.

So I’d be aggressively negotiating with him now and if it’s clear I can’t sign him to a Dork like contract, I’m trading him for the compensation I mentioned.

I will add, a two year contract for someone like Schroder does not really damage a future rebuild. It may cause us to win a few more games and drop us down the draft ladder. We all know this management is not ready to accept a rebuild so at least they didn’t go out and sign a marginal player to long term stranglehold contract.

If I’m a championship competitive team and I think I need a little help down the stretch, I’d be looking at a guy like DS so if the Kings want to move him after a year or at the trade deadline, I don’t think it would be a problem.

36 is somewhat optimistic. With way the roster is currently constructed and the hangover from last season – going to take the under here on wins next year – the Kings will be lucky to win 26 games. Bad enough that they are “semi-tanking on accident”.

Not an all-star, but more than competent until the point guard of the future (PGOTF) arrives. I’d have felt better about it if he wasn’t getting the full fourteen mil, but when you need a player at a position, it usually costs ya.

June 30, 2025 4:38 pm

Stupid fucking team. This is why you get trashed by the league and many hate you. You just keep making stupid fucking moves.

You suck ass. You have no money or cap. You need to trade 4 guys for expiring and a pick (just fucking trade LaVine for Beal and buy out Beal and tank). This team won’t win and they may as well fucking tank.

You drafted Carter last year. You have Clifford amd Maxime. Why the fuck are you sticking with vets that will only hinder player development?

Shit like this is why I wished this team DIED IN 2012! I FUCKING HATE THIS TEAM!!! STUPID! STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!

Then get rid of the fucking team. Leave Sac for impossible levels of incompetence. I got back on because of Raynaud but now I am spiteful enough that I hope they lose him because the Kings will waste him. Pacers should have picked him. They made a mistake but Kam Jones isn’t bad. Pacers can develop players and be fun to watch unlike the fucKINGS.

Good player and a veteran at a massive position of need. Talent plus need usually equals at least a good fit. Now, bombs away on a DDR or Lavine trade. Or both.

If what I was hearing this morning has any validity to it, there's a reason why the Schroder signing hasn't been confirmed. For the record, I 100% believe it's happening. But the Kings are working for more, and how they sign Schroder is part of it.

37% FG with the pistons 30% from 3

Empty stats with the nets

They could have signed Westbrook at this point. He would at least show up for us every game and bring vocal leadership and toughness something we haven’t had since the glory days, I’m guessing, was not old enough to watch them lol . Since I been a fan, we’ve yet to have a franchise player who’s a true leader and can command the locker room. That’s why we suck.

First head scratching move. All this talk about defensive 2 way guys… making the team look like the pacers or thunder and you do this??? Loved the draft but this goes against the grain completely. It also goes against their young player development. By the time we get rid of these old guys, our young players will not be the young anymore.

Hopefully we have a bunch more moves or trades or wake me up in 2 years, when after not making the playoffs the rebuild finally begins.

We just lost one of our 2 way guys in Keon so we could sign an aging alleged PG in Schroder. This is the price of refusing to do a tear down. The Kings told Keon he isn’t part of the team’s future. Building a play in team around mediocre veterans other teams don’t want is the strategy. Would love to see Keon end up in Denver.

If the goal is to get a Top 5 pick, this is a great signing. How vsluable is he? Dennis played for 3 teams least year. If the goal is playoffs, this is a typical Kings blunder.

Of course they do. This owner treats this team like his ego toy and in turn treats fans like shit.

Why people have a problem with people on this site pointing out the shit is beyond me.

I mean, I saw a shit ton of positive posts about the draft picks.

The Kings? On a Kings site? Or do you mean the Kings ineptitude?

Either way, what else should we talk about? The good moves? The good/smart owner? Kinda hard to discuss things that don’t explain at.

Im a tank guy at this point but I realize Vivek won’t ever allow that. On its face, maybe a slight overpay but need to see what other moves there are to actually signal a real direction. Schroeder hasn’t been on many great teams lately and maybe he’s just a quiet tank to silence Vivek. Im hoping they bring the suck and not fiddle with mediocrity for middling picks.

Since we don’t yet know what the deal cost, let’s just recap what other FA PGs got:

Jones: 1yr/7M from Orlando
Jerome: 3yr/28M from Memphis
Russell: 2yr/12M from Dallas

Judging by the above, fair value would be right around here, 6-9M per year right?

Any thoughts on trying to get Cam Whitmore? Seems like Houston needs (wants) to move him. 2 years left on lower end rookie deal. He’s not even 21 yet, younger than a lot of guys drafted last week. Clearly Udoka doesn’t want much to do with him…and maybe there is good reason for that. He has some deficiencies, but he has the size and athletic ability to become a real player.

Seems like the type of relatively low cost swings/potential the Kings should be taking. He could play off the bench consistently or shift to more minutes as larger contracts potentially make their way out. Would have a year or 2 to see what you got.

I still remember Whitmore falling in the draft and hoping MM would trade up for him. Instead MM stood pat and traded the pick to DAL. Kangz.

Clarkson signing with the Knicks.
They needed another perimeter bucket getter to take some of the load off JB.
I’d say the Knicks are the faves in the East heading into next szn with JT, Hali and Dame out.

Yeah, I had seen some rumors on BlueSky regarding Monk. Dunno how much truth there is to it, but I guess we’ll see….

Pistons considering trading for Malik Monk, per @ Jake Fischer.Dennis Schroder deal could be folded into sign-and-trade between Kings and Pistons.

1000%, but just a bit more traditional PR out of Schroeder. Better defender. Get out of the last year Monks player option at 21M, which feels like a possible pick up depending on how things go for him. Plus save 4-6 million on cap each of next 2 years. Could be important for resigning Keon or someone else. Think it makes negligible difference on win total next two years. Possible positive (if that’s even a good thing)

At first I was WTF, but thinking about it it makes a lot of sense. Clears some log jam for Keon to play since he isn’t a true point.

I don’t hate the move. Better than Westbrick or the two Pats: Beverly and Mills. Wish he could’ve been a little cheaper. Time to get whatever you can for DDR, Monk, and JV. Wings, more long wings.

So I’m seeing some interwebs stuff that says the reason why this Schroder signing isn’t a done deal is because it may be a S&T with Monk?

I’m really not a fan of adding Schroder, but I can rationalize a swap for Monk. To me, the two are damn near the same. Why have both?

How so?

Dennis assists better, but turns the ball over more. Monk shoots better but defends worse.

HERE is their career comparison. How does one offset the other. A straight swap is negligible, IMO. Kings need a PG and Dennis is marginally better at that. Maybe it comes down to contracts? A straight swap really doesn’t affet the W/L column.

Dennis Schröder

  • AST/TO: 2.85 (averaging 5.4 APG and 1.9 TOs per game across 75 games)

Malik Monk

  • AST/TO: 2.28 (averaging 5.6 APG and 2.4 TOs per game across 65 games)

I’d not realized it, but even playing for three teams, DS still played ten more games than Monk.

It’s not going to be Schroder’s job to put up a bunch of shots, at almost all times he’ll be playing with four guys who can score the ball.

I looked at the career comparison, and was kind of surprised in how many ways DS’ numbers are better than Monk’s. Hell, the Pizza Guy’s 3P% is .350 and Dennis’ is at .342 over their careers. That’s a difference of eight makes every thousand attempts.

I didn’t examine the head-to-head stats, given that they aren’t likely to play more than two games against one another whether the trade happens or not.

This isn’t an attempt to make some big case to support such a trade, but at the moment, What Schroder does is more critical to the Sacramento Kings than what Monk does.

Schroder has much better handles than Monk but isn’t the outside shooter that Monk is but Schroder is an adequate shooter. You can feel very comfortable with Schroder as your primary ball handler and distributer. That’s not Monks game, he’s a scorer first.

Just a pointless, awful signing. Overpaying for middling vets to chase 41 wins is just…why? Monk is better than Schroeder (not as a point guard, but otherwise) and four years younger. A sign and trade makes this worse, not better.

I haven’t paid attention to the other bottom feeder teams, but on a talent basis, this is not currently a play in team.

Thank you. The signing was bad enough but to then give them monk for nothing is so unbelievably stupid. No one was going to pay Shroeder 14 million a year. Let alone 2 years of it. And spare me the Collison comparisons. Check the stats. Collison was not good but he was much better than Shroeder. This is why this team cant have nice things. What a joke. Looking forward to Shroeder grifting fouls and launching 3’s at 30 percent a clip. Scot is giving off Pete vibes

I’ve watched enough of his game to know he isn’t worth 28 million for 2 years. Who was going to pay him that much? Why be in such a hurry to lock down a player that doesnt have a market? Even if you did insist on signing one of these shitty pg’s would it have made that much of a difference if it was Jones for only 1 year and 7 mill? All of the other garbage pg’s in his tier are making half what we’re paying Shroeder. It was a dumb move.

“… Who … pay him that much?” The team that signed Monk for $78M for 4 years? Jest aside, in the circumstances (team won’t tear it down and rebuild or go all in/pay the salaries & tax) it is an OK move … and if in an S&T they move Monk, who is cool guy, good attitude but makes some bonehead plays and may be less keen about being in SAC than he was a years ago, all the better.

Does the 4 years younger even really matte?. Are either of these guys going to be on the next iteration of a even decent Kings team? Feels unlikely.

I think they are similar like Adam, but even if Schroeder slightly worse, he might be a slightly better fit for what they need and more importantly you get out of the last year of Monk’s contract for around 20M

Guys rarely get a lot better at 28, in the league for 9 years. Not impossible, but goes against history. He is what he is, this is Monk’s prime…which is maybe a 10% better Schroeder. Worth clearing a little bit of cap and definitely clearing 20M in year 3. Neither one are helping the Kings win 45+ this year.

Monk has actually declined for 3 straight years, but none of that matters. Neither Monk or Schroder are moving the needle for the Kings next season, unless you consider 41 wins are considerably better than 40 wins.

-Well it’s one way potentially and has some benefits if swapping similar players. I just think it’s fairly likely 2 years from now if Monk isn’t moved this site will be having a discussion about hoping that Monk doesn’t opt in to 21M in 2027-28. This gets a similar player, although shifting ball handling roles a bit and hopefully opening more minutes for Keon.

I don’t think Monk has some great value. You aren’t getting a decent first for him…maybe a 20s first from some team. Your aren’t getting a valuable wing.

I like Malik, I’ve cheered for him…but he is a fairly one dimensional offensive minded guard off the bench. He had his chance at the car keys last year and I think he proved he is not a quality starter. Nothing wrong with that. There’s lots of dudes kind of like him…Jordan Clarkson, Ty Jerome, Buddy Hield, Dennis Schroeder, Payton Pritchard, TJ McConnell. Malik is probably better than some of those guys. Worse than others. You know what none of those guys do though? They don’t make 19-21 million like Malik for the next 3 years. Most are getting 1/2 that or less.

Paying guys like that 20 million is in an inefficiency. It’s like RB’s in football. You can find one dimensional scoring guards in the late first and second round reasonably enough.

I have no idea if the goal is to cut payroll for ownership…but this would provide a bit more flexibility now and in the future, without a major downside in talent in the short and long term. I’m also for moves that open up minutes for Keon at this point, just for the simple fact that every single flipping line up he plays in has a positive net rating and sometimes a massive one.

Gotta build around Zach, an order straight from the top.

From that perspective, Monk is reduced to being someone competing with Zach for shots, and we can’t have that.

This team is going to be horrifically bad this season.

Why is everyone so adamant that we need a point guard?

For what exactly? Reaching 37 wins? Why?

For an offensive identity which consists of DDR and LaVine chucking up shots? Or handing it to Domas in the high post?

For developing young players? Which ones? These two mid older rookies that have a minor shot at staying on a roster of a competent team?

Got a little shake up to my already dwindled (and still dwindling) hope when just for the heck of it, I clicked on Tankathon.com as I prepare for my VSL trip next week.

They have Sacramento as the 8th worst team.

Sigh.

The Sacramento Kings should send Kfan to rep the team on Lottery Day

Wow! Did not see that one coming. How did the Bucks afford that? They are an apron team

FROM SHAMS:BREAKING: Free agent center Myles Turner has agreed to a four-year, $107 million deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, plus a player option for year four in 2028-29 and a full 15% trade kicker, sources tell ESPN. Stunner.

Well, this may be the answer.

FROM SHAMS:Just in: The Milwaukee Bucks are waiving Damian Lillard and stretching the remaining $113 million on his contract in order to acquire Myles Turner, sources tell ESPN. Lillard's two seasons in Milwaukee come to an end as he rehabilitates a torn Achilles tendon.

My guess is he takes the year to rehab the Achilles and then re-assesses from there. Worst case scenario, he doesn’t make it back and has a $113m severance package.

That is one heck of a bold move and confuses any thought of trading away Giannis. Big /hat tip to Dame’s agent, Aaron Godwin (who also represents DeMar DeRozan) and to the Bucks.

So I understand correctly, he is off their NBA ledger but not off their books (they have to pay him).

He will count for roughly $22m-$23m against their cap for the next five years since they waived and stretched him. I suppose if he ultimately does not come back and retires that they may be able to petition to have him removed from the cap math due to injury, but I believe that he has to count against the cap until then.

That’s pretty crazy, but I guess that’s what you do to keep a guy like Giannis on your team. It will absolutely suck for them if Giannis still demands a trade within the next few years or hits free agency in 3.

Apparently Giannis was not happy with the Bucks waiving Dame. This should be interesting. Could completely change how this offseason goes now if he wants to be leave now.

I would also be pretty shocked if he doesn’t try to come back. I still remember Darius Miles getting a brief briefly with Memphis and it completely messed with the Blazers salary cap as they had previously gotten the retirement exemption.

I feel like some team in the East would 100% sign Lillard to a 1 year, $5M deal to be a player coach just to hurt the Bucks cap situation if they felt they were any threat.

I reserve my reaction until the dust settles. I think Monk and Schroeder are on the same level. The team is probably going to suck with either/both player(s).

Shroeder’s reported salary for ’25-26 would be 80.4% of Monk’s this season. Would Detroit need to include something to make up some of the difference?

If this does result in more PT for Raynaud, I’m in favor of it. Could it be a very subtle indicator that Sacramento is steering into a mild skid toward a tank?

My guess is trying to line up another move. Whole point of maybe being a S&T is to use the space on another FA or trade that can presumably add more value than Monk.

Assume Perry is trying to line up some complex pieces. Not sure you just give Monk away in a vacuum if those fall through.

WTF?

The Denver Nuggets are trading Dario Saric to the Sacramento Kings for Jonas Valanciunas, league sources confirm. ESPN was first to report. Nuggets have now added Valanciunas, Bruce Brown, and acquired Cam Johnson via trade since free agency began.

There probably is more to come, but do you feel that Sacramento didn’t need a stretch four more than a backup center?

And I ask as a fan of JV.

Certainly fits the stretch four role while saving some money. Seems like there’s other stuff in the works aside from Schroder.

We still need a backup four… a Trey Lyle’s type player since there are not any 3&D stretch fours available.. unless we take a run at someone like a Jonathan Isaac who I know has injury problems, etc. but he can play the four defensively can also play the five and hits the three. I’m wondering if DDR to Miami is still out there pick up Jacquez and Rozier I doubt they will send us wiggins

Made me chuckle, tell us how you really feel. He did suddenly seem to forget how to shoot but I think a lot of that had to do with inconsistency, etc.. Had he gotten into a rhythm and settled in his shooting would’ve been just fine but it doesn’t matter.

So I’m seeing a lot of hate for this signing because it seems to signal the same move to stay afloat as a middling team, but I don’t really see schroder as winning us many games. If we sign him as an asset and trade him mid-season while still sucking, it’s not a bad move. If we use the full MLE on signing him now that Jonas has been traded, hopefully we at least get a pick or another player in the deal, but I still see us fully able to lose games (I hope).

OTOH, if Monk is traded straight up for Schroder, I’m going to be confused and annoyed becuase I am quite sure we could at least get a late first for him

I don’t think anyone believes that Schroder will be some huge difference-maker, but you need to have at least one guy who can dribble the ball without kicking it out of bounds. DS gives you that, and if a better point can be had, he’s a solid backup.

Anyone signed for the position this summer was never going to be more than a placeholder.

exactly. So I don’t hate this signing. He’s a placeholder and at least has some value around the league to be flipped later while still losing us games

Well I’ve been saying that Val would be a great fit for Denver and now it has happened. Not sure what the Kings got for him but if it’s just Saric, I don’t like it. Very solid move by Denver as I said many times, Val is the perfect backup for the Joker. Deandre Jordan just not the same guy anymore and Denver needed a solid backup and got one.

As for the Kings idk. Have to see the full trade.

ChatGPT in the house ..cheaper than Scott Perry Kings need real depth at backup PG, a 3-and-D power forward, and a reliable backup SF behind Keegan Murray. A DeRozan sign-and-trade could fill all three holes.

Teams worth targeting for a DeRozan trade:

Brooklyn Nets – Rebuilding, willing to absorb DeRozan’s contract and send back rotation pieces or draft capital.New Orleans Pelicans – Have young wings/guards (Herb Jones, Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr.).Indiana Pacers – Could part with TJ McConnell, Aaron Nesmith, Jarace Walker, Obi Toppin.Orlando Magic – Surplus at forward/guard; Anthony Black, Markelle Fultz, Jonathan Isaac could be involved.Sample trade ideas:

Pelicans deal: Kings send DeRozan, get back Dyson Daniels (backup PG), Larry Nance Jr. (stretch PF), and a 2nd-round pick.Pacers deal: Kings trade DeRozan, receive TJ McConnell + Jarace Walker + filler.
???? MLE Target Profiles (~$12.9M)

Caleb Martin (SF/PF)

Proven playoff defender and floor spacer; averaged ~9.1 pts, 4.4 rebs, 2.2 asts, shooting ~38% from deep  Royce O’Neale (SF)

Veteran 3-and-D specialist; elite perimeter defense, high basketball IQ.Kyle Anderson (PF)

Playmaking big with solid passing and decision-making—ideal alongside Sabonis.Jae’Sean Tate (SF)

Versatile wing; strong on-ball defender, brings hustle and energy off the bench.
Kelly Oubre Jr. (SF)

Athletic scorer; can provide instant offense in spurts.Torrey Craig (SF)

Physical defender; brings toughness and locker-room grit.Yuta Watanabe (SF)

Budget-friendly; high-effort shooter and 3-and-D role player.Sandro Mamukelashvili (PF)

Stretch 4/5; brings playmaking and size with perimeter shooting upside.Bottom line:
Flip DeRozan to plug the PG, PF, and SF backups, then use the MLE on a quality 3-and-D forward. That strengthens the bench while keeping the Kings competitive in the West.

The Bulls are not trading Giddey—they’ve built around him and are set to extend him after his breakout performance.
If Sac wants a backup PG, they need to look elsewhere. Giddey isn’t the guy—Chicago’s already stacked at the position and sees Giddey as core.

I’m interested if there’s anything to the Monk deal with Detroit. If so, could the Kings mgmt. be showing the first signs of acceptance that a total rebuild is required. If so, I’m ok with the Val trade as it reduces payroll. So reduce payroll, acquire draft capital, make trades to get younger and cheaper and let’s go.
