The Sacramento Kings expressed interest in Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams III, according to a report from Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints:
“In the Western Conference, the Sacramento Kings are another team that has registered interest in Williams, sources said. The 6’9″ center would provide immediate rebounding and defensive depth in the frontcourt behind Domantas Sabonis. Sacramento ranked 14th in defensive rating and 13th in opponents’ points in the paint during the 2023-24 season, two areas that Williams would immediately provide a boost in.”
Williams would be an interesting player for the Kings. As Siegel notes, Time Lord is a rebounder and a rim protector, and would be an excellent backup to Domantas Sabonis. It’s hard to find a trade between Portland and Sacramento that would make sense, though. Williams is owed $12.4 million next season, and any trade for him (unless it was part of a larger deal) would likely involved Kevin Huerter (probably unappealing to Portland due to their abundance of guards) or Trey Lyles and another player (unappealing to Sacramento given the lack of power forwards other than Lyles).
Following the signing of Orlando Robinson, the Kings have three centers currently on the roster. This makes me think that Sacramento’s interest is probably something that happened prior to the Robinson signing, and the Kings have already moved on. Nonetheless, it’s a fun idea to discuss during a slow time in the season.
How is his health, nowadays?
Played 6 games last year, 35 games the year before.
So…he’s rested and fresh!
Low mileage!
Time Off Lord.
His minutes are bigger on the inside.
Guessing his health will make a rebound
LOL
Health is fine- this week (off season)
12.4 is way too high. Portland got jimmered on that deal.
Robinson, while he looks like potential is expendable is something better comes along. Portland cannot avoid playing Clingdan. Ayton expendable but not good pick up for Sac. Rather have J. Grant but for only 1 First round pick
IMO not a good idea to poke around on the deep periphery, like JT Or etc. Go for starting caliber. Which teams are in sell mode?
RW3 and Mitchell Robinson are two similar players with immense talent that simply can’t stay healthy. Both appear to be available and would be nice backups to DS, but hard pass as neither can stay healthy.
Plus, keep the powder dry for a starting PF. Even Jerry in the last pod mentioned the need for an athletic 4 and the need for more athleticsim on this team as a whole.
Williams is something to see when he’s healthy, but the cost to Sacramento would need to be low, since there’s a bit more than a non-zero chance that he’ll miss a lot of games. Barring something weird, there’s no particularly good reason for Portland to sell extremely low.
I would prefer them going after. Flyer on JT Thor or the better Morris twin in hopes of getting some depth at the 4
Omot from S Sudan looked good against the US Team too. But he might be more of a SF. We could use that too.
No thanks. $12 million for a guy that plays as many games as Harry Giles is not something the team needs. When healthy, he is a solid center, but he is rarely healthy.
Couldn’t he be absorbed into our MLE?
Kings don’t have the full MLE anymore, at least that’s what I heard. Also, he would push them in to the tax, and he ain’t good enough to go in to the tax for.
Correct. Because the Kings acquired DeRozan via sign-and-trade, they are hard capped at the first apron, the MLE doesn’t apply anymore. They would need to send outgoing salary in order to acquire RW.
The Orlando Robinson signing doesn’t have much bearing on them being interested in Time Lord IMO. If he’s healthy and can be had for cheap, they should absolute go get him. He brings a totally different dimension to this team.
My friend, the cut and paste of Google, added these quotes on RW3:
I dunno. He was drafted 27th in 2018 out of Texas A&M and has played 215 games in 6 seasons (215/6 = 36). His career high is 22 points in 2021. His health in 2021 (played 61 games, 29.6 min per game) earned him his current contract. It was a gamble on Boston’s part and they finally gave up. I am sure he is a nice fella, but I would be shocked if the Kings can’t do better. I think I would prefer Drew Timme (sorry, Bryant). I see that Emoni Bates is a RFA from Cleveland and I thought (and I know less than nothing) that he looked pretty darn decent in this Summer League for Cleveland. I like him better than Jalen (not Jaden) McDaniels. They may turn out to be the same players (so to speak) but Bates is 20 years old.
No thank you.
Can’t stay healthy, paid too much, and too costly to acquire (considering his exorbitant salary and severely-limited availability and) given that the Kings would have to send back a player that actually contributes.
He is big. He is not in the G league. He has talent.
Better than many prospects but that does not mean much if he cannot play.
The “registered interest” likely applies to any NBA big. The Kings are historically a great target for this type of deal. Cannot blame the Blazers for trying.
Will Monte break the cycle?
the most important ability is availability, and he lacks that.
McDaniels can be “aggregated” in a deal after Aug 26 or 27.
I don’t think this is the guy. Some games are great but just not enough of them
And Nets raising asking price on DFS and C. Johnson When Ainge hears that, he will demand 18 first round picks for Markenon.
I would love the Kings to get someone. But 2 first round picks for anyone is a bit high especially if salaries have to be matched as well
If I had a over paid and often injured player I did not want I would offer that player to the Kings in a trade. Historically that has worked. For the other team, not the Kings.
Huerter has far more value so any trade involving him would require PDX sending back assets to take on Time Lord’s deal, and that doesn’t even take into consideration the depth PDX already has at the wing.
When the calendar hits, I’d offer Huerter and McDaniels for Williams, Thybulle and some 2nd round picks.
Kings need another move. Too many guards, not enough big guys.
PDX does not need Williams. Infact, does not want him. My goodness, they have Ayton and Clingdan.
If they see RW3 as redundant (he is) + as an injury risk (he is) thy should be willing to get rid of him. But what do they want? They have a ton of guards already- Simons, Scoot, Sharpe and what would they do with Huerter?
NOP and Knicks also looking. Do they have better offers?
My guess is PDX wants draft picks and Kings have to move a salary. Maybe some form of 3 way.
The injury issue is very scary.
