Is Marvin Bagley the key to the Kings rebuild?

The second-year forward has played just 13 games this season.

When the Sacramento Kings selected Marvin Bagley III with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, he was supposed to be the player who solidified the team’s rebuild.

Jason Jones of The Athletic took part in the website’s Pacific Division roundtable and had an interesting take when asked if the team he covers is in a better place now than the start of the 2019-20 season.

Here is what Jones had to say:

“No, because we still have no better idea of what Bagley is as a player because he’s been injured most of the season. Bagley is the other key to Sacramento’s rebuild and until he’s on the court, the Kings still do not know if he and Fox are the duo they can build around. The Kings’ decision to commit to a four-year extension to Buddy Hield before the season at starter-level money (four years, $86 million with up to $20 million more in incentives) could be problematic, depending on how much it costs to retain restricted free agent Bogdan Bogdanovic. It helps that the Kings were able to trade Dewayne Dedmon’s contract in February, but the Kings are still in a tough spot in a deep division. If the season is restarted and the Kings were able to make the playoffs, that changes the perspective and gives the team something to build on. But until the Kings know what they have in Bagley, their future is uncertain.”

Bagley has only played in 13 games this season and put up decent numbers in his second year, averaging 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds.

The downside is that the Kings went 2-11 with the sophomore in the lineup and Bagley’s net rating is sitting at a brutal -12.6.

The 21-year-old was picked ahead of Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic, but that decision was made by vice president of basketball operations and GM Vlade Divac.

Injuries have robbed Bagley of making a leap this season, but that isn’t to say he can’t improve to be a consistent double-double guy.

Do you agree with Jones’ opinion that the Kings future is uncertain until they know what they have with Bagley?
