Kings vs. Timberwolves Preview: Clinch Day

The Sacramento Kings can clinch a playoff spot TONIGHT.
By | 81 Comments | Mar 27, 2023

The Sacramento Kings, holder of the longest playoff drought in NBA history, can clinch a playoff spot tonight.

Let’s talk Kings basketball!

When: Monday, March 27th, 7:00 PM PT
Where: Golden 1 Center, Sacramento, CA
TV: NBC Sports California
Radio: Sactown Sports 1140

For Your Consideration

The Sacramento Kings, holder of a sixteen year playoff drought, the longest such streak in the history of the National Basketball Association, can clinch a playoff spot tonight with a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, or a Phoenix Suns loss, or a Los Angeles Clippers loss.

I refuse to jinx this – I have literally no other words to write.

Prediction

In little reference pages on websites all over the world, the number 16 is replaced with a 0. It causes tears of joy and is generally considered a good move.

Kings: 127, Wolves: 122

I’m not concerned about making the playoffs as the 6 seed. I want to clinch the 3 with faints hopes of getting the 2. But Memphis refuses to lose. Kings went 7-3 in the last 10 and lost two spots to 9-1 Mem.

3rd seed is pretty much guaranteed at this point, since teams like the Clips, Warriors, Suns, etc. would have to go nearly perfect in the win column for the games remaining, while we would simultaneously have to lose almost all our games. I thought that Memphis would be losing more after they had all those players out, but kudos to them for winning. While mathematically it’s still possible to get the 2nd seed, odds are more likely than not we’ll stay at 3rd seed.

Basketball gods, I have never prayed to you before.
I have no tongue for it.

No one, not even you, will remember if we were a good team or bad. Why we won, and why we lost. No. All that matters is that today, we stood against many years of the lottery.

Valor pleases you, Basketball gods, so grant us one request. Grant us the playoffs!

And if you do not listen, then to Basketball hell with you!”

Minnesota has KAT back in play.
Don’t know whether they’ll use him today.
For them, back-to-back
As they come into Sac—
An advantage we can’t throw away!

How fitting. Charlie Brown is from Minnesota, and he’s kicking the football tonight.

Kind of ironic we are playing the Wolves to clinch a playoff spot. Last year when they clinched a playoff spot via play-in, they had the iconic “tears crying – jump up to the announcers table” type of celebration. I suspect the Kings will be doing that (Malik Monk comes to mind) and probably a LOT more if they win tonight.

Can’t wait to celebrate and hopefully Fox is good to go as well.

GO KINGS!

It will be interesting to see how the kings Defend Kat and Gobert when they are in the game together..

Kat can play on perimeter some but is most effective in High Post. Rudy needs to be closer to basket… kings don’t have size to match up with both out there unless they try and play Metu and Sabonis or Sabonis and Holmes together but that messes with offense …

Rudy has not shown the ability to consistently exploit mismatches. I think if the Kings put Sabonis on Rudy and Barnes on KAT, then Sabonis can be an extra hand when Kat goes into the post and whoever the low man is can cover Rudy.

I’m more worried about who will contain Ant. Kessler might get a decent amount of burn down the stretch if it’s close

Last night’s game was Ant’s first back from his recent injury, and he did not look anywhere near 100%. If he plays tonight, let’s hope he’s still a bit hampered.

You’re probably right Jman. They also play @Phx Wednesday, home vs the Lakers Friday, PDX next Sunday 4/2, @Brooklyn 4/4, @San Antonio 4/8 & New Orleans 4/9.

There’s at least 3 winnable games and they are already at 38-37 and 7th in the standings. GSW is 6th at 39-37, LAC is 5th at 39-36, and Phx is 4th at 39-35.

But, I don’t think the Wolves sit anybody unless they are getting blown out and wave the white flag. Hopefully that’s the way it goes because this Kings team could use a blowout in their favor for a change. The last time Domas played less than 30 MP was in the blowout game in New Orleans in early Feb. It’s only happened 7 times all season.

Yeah, that’s crazy.

Kessler seems to get burned on occasion by offensive players going right, Perhaps play to take away the right from Anthony Edwards forcing him left. Also, don’t jump to defend a shot or pass until the offensive player jumps first.

Lyles can force one or the other of them to come out of the paint, and Sabonis can operate far from the basket, too. Hoping that cuts down on traffic in the lane when Kings dive in.

And Keegan needs to just dunk the fucking ball.

But yeah, that’s totally weird. He’s smiling???

And yeah, the bottom photo–the no smile gives it away!

You beat me to it! The record breaking 3 will fall through the net as time expires to seal a 1 point victory! Will the addition of K. Edwards help the Kings to contain A. Edwards? So far, Davion’s the only guy with any success keeping him out of the paint, but tall shooters make life difficult for Mitchell.

If I am looking at this correctly, due to how tight the West is, if the Kings win tonight (or if the Clips lose), the Kings not only clinch a playoff spot, they clinch home court advantage for the 1st round.

Scratch that – a Kings win clinches home court in the 1st round, but a Kings loss and a Clips loss doesn’t quite cinch things up. Bottom line, win it and clinch, with a top four berth guaranteed.

I’d just like to see more 5 more W’s because a 50 win season is awesome and I haven’t experienced one of those in awhile (and I was certainly feeling differently about the Kings in my early 20’s 20 years ago than I do now LOL).

I’m sure you, and many of the older Kings fans, understand that sentiment well. Or really anyone who was of age for those teams and these teams.

But simply looking at the schedules for everyone, it doesn’t seem slight edit: nobody below them in the standings can catch the Kings if they just simply win their next 4 games. That’ll put them at 49 W’s. Every single one of these games is very, very winnable. I’m just hoping we don’t have a Kangz moment tonight.

On 3/6 the Kings beat the Pels for their 38th win of the season, officially turning my preseason prediction into pessimism. Your prediction was a thought-to-be audacious 45. They may get you tonight, oh brother in pessimism. 😜

Its absurd that a preseason prediction of a top 7 ORtg and 45 wins can be now claimed pessimistic. And that’s just about my favorite part of the season. These guys literally shocked the world.

Stick this in your sexagenarian noodle and let it roll around for a bit: Imagine this team if De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis develop a serious 2 man game. Imagine Keegan Murray as a 22 PPG scorer. My quinquagenarian noodle is struggling with this. I’m accustomed to not having that many nice things. But it’s fun to think about!

We don’t see the Kings feature a 2 man game between De’Aaron and Domas. Keegan is a guy that shows alot of flashes on 2 ends, but they are still flashes. I love this teams future alot, honestly. And the crazy part is that the rest of the offense doesn’t necessarily have to suffer.

Absurd really.

I like that. Sanonis at 26 and all other starters, except Barnes and other major bachups under 26. If we keep the core around a few years draft a couple and young free agents or two ( We should be able to not like years past) we could be set for quite a few years. Maybe even a championship or two.

The Kings are already mathematically guaranteed at least a Play-In spot. I think it just happened last night, actually, after the Mavericks loss. The West is so tight this year that it’s only slightly easier to guarantee a Play-in spot than it is to clinch a Playoff spot.
Nobody seems to be tracking play-in ‘clinching’, and I know that nobody cares, relative to clinching an actual playoff spot, but I thought it was at least worth mentioning.

Hello Kings Herald!
Been a daily reader for years (since the old site) and prob interacted with some of you on Twitter, but never commented before. First time, long time, etc.
Born and raised in Sac but left in 2005, returned for a brief stint as a reporter for the Independent and have lived in New York for the past 11 years.

Saw Sac beat Brooklyn a couple of weeks ago (my 1st Kings game since the Boogie era) and there were hundreds of fellow fans there. Pretty sure every person in the Tri-State area with any connection to the 916 came. The common refrain from New Yorkers was, “I had no idea there were so many Sacramento,” and our response was “me neither!”

Flew to Sacramento for this homestand, hoping I’d get to see them clinch. Friday night against the Suns was my first trip to Golden 1 center and it was just amazing. Now I’ve got tickets to take my dad to the game tonight and I couldn’t be more excited.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone and hope to be an active part of the Kings Herald community in the future. Also, need to find the other New York-based Kings so we can find a bar to gather and watch games together in the future!

Let’s go Kings.

(Carried over from the Kings pulse thread. Just thought it might work better in this thread.)

Ya gotta think that Clippers and Warriors would rather face Sacramento in the first round rather than a healthy Phoenix team with Durant, Booker and Chris Paul.

Actually, a week ago I was thinking the Kings really didn’t want to face Phoenix in the 1st rd….but I’m going to take a guess and say they don’t want to face Sac in the 1st rd as much as they might have a month ago. The matchup is looking less, and less, in their favor. Sac plays at a fast tempo that already puts their roster at a disadvantage (IMO), and the Warriors and Clippers don’t want to play at the Kings tempo either. The Clippers are a really slow team (I saw Ty Lue admit that before one of their OKC games last week) and that alone puts them at a disadvantage. Watch what De’Aaron Fox said after the 176-175 game about ‘we knew we could speed them up.’ That was not what anyone in the Western Conference FO wanted to hear. All you got was the “I don’t give a fuck whose over there’ quotes on social media but that wasn’t the real takeaway of that presser IMO. What De’Aaron said about 7 minutes later was far more revealing, and far more dangerous to every team out West. I guarantee everyone knows it, too. The Kings, they be a’ comin!

This Kings team plays a very fast tempo in the halfcourt. You have to have size, length, a lot of offense that can attack this team effectively, and you have to have someone who can manage the tempo of the game in your favor. Paul is that guy….but he’s mostly not a threat offensively like he once was. Mike Conley is similar only he’s more effective. I’m not sure if the Warriors truly have that guy (I don’t think that’s a strength of Steph/Dray IMO.). The Clippers do not. In otherwords, you really want to be Milwaukee, Boston, Philly and to a lesser extent Denver. Those are the teams that I would hands down pick to beat the Kings in a 7 game series. RIGHT NOW.

Tempo, not pace (that’s about how many times you get up and down the court), is how you beat the Kings and how you stop them offensively. You make them work for every shot in the halfcourt, you don’t let them shoot it quickly before you’re completely set up. (We saw that against Memphis, Toronto, Philadelphia, Boston, Milwaukee.) Like we saw against Utah, they bombed early and often because attacking Walker Kessler was just something they weren’t going to do that successfully. Utah’s size and length kept them in the game (that and they probably had a lot left in the tank after getting blown out at home vs MIlwaukee the night before) far longer than it should have because the Kings just didn’t have quite enough counters at scoring in the paint without De’Aaron Fox. But even against Utah, as the game wound down, the points in the paint favored Utah less and less as it had early on. They won that battle by 20 points, and lost to the Kings by 21 at the 3pt line. In a game in which the Kings didn’t shoot especially lights out and on a SEGABABA which does not favor jump shots usually.

That’s the thing with this Kings team. They don’t beat you offensively one way. They are one of the lowest live ball TOV teams in the league which helps their defense to not constantly give up a stream of layups on the defensive end. Which is good since they don’t have any sort of rim protection whatsoever. They speed you up in the halfcourt with the way they flow and cut and shoot and what not. They are conditioned for it, too. Plus they don’t quit. They make you beat them. It’s a testament to the coaching staff and players alike just how committed they are to playing their game. They rarely get frazzled, they rarely make horribly bad decisions, and so forth. Plus they can score…. a lot.

This Kings team is not one that I suspect a lot of the West teams will be eager to see. Can they lose in the 1st rd? Absolutely. But the Warriors mystique is gone (IMO), the Clippers have a lot of wear and tear on their key players and aren’t the daunting matchup some to seem to believe they really are, the Suns need DeAndre Ayton to be great and he’s not every night (and Durant/Booker won’t be enough to beat every team out West either). There’s a game within a game component that people keep missing with this Kings team and all we keep hearing about (especially nationally; occsionally locally) is what they don’t do.
But it would be a mistake to assume this team can’t make noise and can’t score on their opponents. Especially since they will likely be rested for the playoff push. Just a sample size based on something I looked up (because of a conversation I’m having on Twitter):

Kings ORtg against:

LA Lakers: 124.8 (2nd highest of any Lakers opponent)
LA Clippers: 125.5 (3rd highest of any Clippers opponent)
Phoenix Suns: 119.9 (7th highest of any Suns opponent)
Golden State Warriors: 112.9 (19th highest of any Warriors opponent)

But let’s remember a point about those Warriors games: They were all played within the first 13 games of the season (and through November 30th the Kings had a 116.1 ORtg), and since Jan 1st the Kings have a 121.9 ORtg and a 118.4 DRtg (and a 26-14 record; which amounts to a 53 win pace) which puts the Kings in the same place they’ve been all year — elite offense and below average defense — but they don’t beat themselves either. They make you beat them in the halfcourt, they play for their defensive rebounds to push the tempo, they play for the opportunistic steal (which is a real problem for the Warriors given how turnover prone they are) and we saw how that helped against the Clippers, you can’t just keep this team out on the paint or leave them alone at the 3 pt line, fouling them is a problem since they are top 5 in the NBA in made FTs (and close to that in FT rate), and you have to figure out a way to stop multiple lineups that can really score.

We can talk about the bad matchup’s for the Kings, but they are a bad matchup for a lot of teams out there, too. Let’s not forget that part of the equation in our rush to provide a fair and balanced viewpoint of our beloved dipshits.

The team I want in the 1st rd, believe it or not, is Golden State, and yes I know the series will not be easy. I know the 50-50 calls will go against Sac at least 65% of the time (maybe 70% early on). But….I don’t think that’s what really determines the game. I think the matchup’s dictate that the Warriors will have to stop Domas down low, keep De’Aaron out of the paint, the mid range and so forth. They’ll have to stop the movement of Huerter, they’ll have to slow down Murray on the perimeter or he’ll just get 12 3FG every game and likely hit half (which is a ton to give up in the halfcourt and in the playoffs). Much of the series might hinge on how each side is able to get the most out of their bench. The Dubs have older players with a lot of wear and tear and a lot of experience, too. But I think that won’t be the advantage everyone thinks it is either. At the end, we aren’t talking about whether or not experience wins you games, it’s whether or not experience gives you the ability to execute. The Warriors when they beat the Celtics mainly did so because they had the fresher guys and were able to wear them out.

I know the common wisdom is we should be afraid of other teams due to lack of experience, but that’s just hogwash IMO. These guys are professionals, they are tremendous players with a ton to prove (and their regular season isn’t quieting any doubters)., there’s quite a bit of depth on this team Mike Brown has at his disposal, and the Kings have not matched up recently with the Dubs which will likely make it even tougher for the Dubs to gauge what they have to do to beat the Kings. A week and half ago the Dubs lost in the Crypt to the Clippers even though Steph had a 50 point outing. BY DOUBLE DIGITS. That never happened before. He put up 47 at home to barely beat the Kings (in what was an absolutely insane performance), too. The Kings didn’t let him beat them the next go around at the G Spot, remember, and the Warriors/Kings ended up in a tight affair the Kings ultimately prevailed in.

Cherry pick all the shit you want out of this matchup, but Domantas Sabonis knows what it feels like to be blown out in the 1st rd. But every year he was in the playoffs with Indy, they started off their playoff series on the road (or in the bubble). This will be a very new experience for him. De’Aaron Fox was always going to be ready for the playoffs, the question is how even can he be. But I think he’ll be fine. The moment has never bothered him. Davion will be fine; these moments aren’t too big for him either. Monk was made for these games, the question is whether or not he hits his shots. Huerter knows the drill and is in the same boat as Monk IMO. Lyles has been in these games before (although not as many as I thought before I looked it up). The only guy for whom the playoffs will be completely new for is Keegan Murray…and that was always going to be the case. Past the first game, the kid’ll be fine. He’s got the temparement and moxie for the NBA playoffs. “Between the ears game is what this team has and what they did not possess in previous seasons.
Yeah, I can’t wait for the playoffs. I’m ready for this regular season to get over with (and the Kings to get their 50 W’s and top ORtg) AND LET’S FUCKING GO PEEPLEZ!!! THESE BEAMERZ ARE GONNA WHOOP DAT AZZ COME PLAYOFF TIMEZ!! YA HEAR?!?!?!? They bringing HELL and BEAMZ WIT ‘EM!

Yep, I’m ready. 🙂

If that took you a second longer than 15 minutes, I’d be very disappointed. But I’ll give you a pass since English is your 3rd language. 😜😜😜

THE KING IN THE FOURTH RETURNS!

Pretty sure I heard that a Kings win and Suns loss would clinch the playoffs, the division, and the 3 seed, since we’d have tiebreakers over the Suns and Clips. Can anyone else confirm or was I just dreaming this? Sorry if I overlooked it in someone else’s comments.

Yep. That’s correct. But I don’t think the Kings clinch the 3 seed/division until Wednesday when they are in PDX for the short baseball series. I don’t think Phx is gonna lose to Utah unless they completely shit the bed.

A Kings win gets us to 46 wins for the season. The Suns (currently 39-35) and Clippers (currently 39-36) would be the only other teams below us in the West who could get to at least that total. A Suns loss caps both them and the Clippers at 46 wins. Since, as you noted, we have tie breakers over both, we would earn the 3 seed in that scenario!

I still don’t like the way the T-Wolves matchup against the Kings, but I’m liking the Kings chances more now.

Yeah, they aren’t playing either guy tonight. I wouldn’t were I them either. An extra day of rest for the in Phx game they have Wed might be alot more beneficial.

I makes me wonder if the Kings consider resting Fox for another game. The Kings don’t have to win this one, but Fox’s long term health is more important. Those nagging hamstring injuries can become a problem.

There’s no way they are keeping him off the court for a game like this Adam. They might sit him in PDX though.

I mean, for fucks sake, I’m going to be going, albeit a bit late, and getting there by mid 2nd qtr (hopefully) because I don’t get off work until 7pm. There’s no fucking way on God’s Green Earth De’Aaron Fox is missing tonight unless he legitimately can’t suit up.

Rest him (Fox) in Portland. And once they hit the Pacific Division Champ clinch, they also clinch Spot #3.

Rest Domas then. Maybe Red Velvet and HB as well, or play them 20 min. Keep Keegan in to hit 200 on the 3FG meter and to get more experience as the main guy. Get Lyles, Metu, Edwards and Davion minutes. Maybe get Keon Ellis and Queta in there.

Appreciate the preview Will. Short and to the point. It will be good to once again shed tears of joy for this team from the contrary. Go Kings!!!
