The playoff-bound Sacramento Kings squad is home today for one of those funny little Sunday “oh damn it, it’s 11 am, tip-off’s in a few hours and I haven’t written the preview” games, against a San Antonio Spurs squad really trying to establish their footing in the race for Victor Wembanyama. Missing eight rotational players, the Spurs will have to dig deep if they’re going to go after a healthy Kings squad (minus Aussie Jesus, of course) and end their six game losing streak! Will the Kings rest key pieces with the Pacific Division still somehow on the line? Will Pop pull out the stops to play spoiler to the Kings for the first time this season? Will I get this preview out before you’re in your seats at the Golden 1 Center?
Let’s talk Kings basketball!
When: Sunday, April 2nd, 3:00 PM PT
Where: Golden 1 Center, Sacramento, CA
TV: NBC Sports California
Radio: Sactown Sports 1140
For Your Consideration
Yee’d Their Last Haw: Today’s preview feels like the NBA equivalent to senior-itis. The Kings have aced their take homework and chapter tests, they’re sitting their with a 3.7 GPA and a partial scholarship to the playoffs and there’s two weeks of school left – you really want a five paragraph essay on the San Antonio Spurs, Mrs. Johnson?! But Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan aren’t even playing! On Gregg Popovich?! But I do the ‘trap game’ stuff EVERYTIME we play the Spurs! Find an interesting angle about one of the assistants? Umm Darius Songaila was my first Kings poster, but that was just an insert in the Sac Bee that got sun faded after six months. THE CBA? YOU WANT ME TO BREAK DOWN THE NEW COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AG- GO GET TIM. MAYBE AKIS OR GREG CAN DO IT BUT HOW DARE YOU THINK THAT I’LL DO THAT IN HERE.
The Spurs have lost six in a row and are sitting everyone they can right now. Pop remains a great coach, so don’t be surprised if this three PM fight has some gamesmanship early on. Pop and Mike Brown are friends – its quite heart warming. Umm… Yeah that’s it for today! Enjoy the sunshine on your face, enjoy the last “easy” game of the season.
Bye!
Prediction
I tweak my back lifting some moving boxes, my bald head gets sunburned during the move and I blame this preview for jinxing me.
Kings: 132, Spurs:114
Let’s clinch that 3rd seed and Pacific Division Title TODAY!!!
I mean we gonna…..unless the Kings don’t bother to show up at all. And I’m not sure the Spurs care at all at this point whatsoever. Even though they played the Dubs a bit tough Friday night.
I saw part of that game. Was interesting to see some of the young players get an opportunity for a bigger role. why wouldn’t they care?
I meant the Spurs org, not some of their fringe guys. Sochan, Vassell, Birch and Collins all did not play. That doesn’t scream trying all that hard from the org standpoint, IMO. Especially if development is important.
They kept the game close until the 4th qtr and the Dubs blasted them. I’m not worried….but I think the Kings likely float through the game and hope the Spurs don’t show up. They’ve had alot of games (20) with 5 to go to finish out the regular season. Domas is at a career high for minutes, and if De’Aaron hadn’t been held out of games he’d be at his career high or slightly past it by now, as well.
I’m prepared for a stinker…that the Kings pull out at the end.
For years Pop’s teams have been vaunted
With success we Kings fans have wanted.
But now things have turned;
Sacramento has earned
Our spot in the playoffs, undaunted!
If you’re gonna blaspheme, at least blaspheme properly. It’s Outback Jesus, dumbass.
You guys should read this comment by BuffaloDiaspora (and myself in response) to Deuce Mason’s tweet.
(edit, reply fail)
This is not cute, Gonzo.
Grizzlies down 10 to the Bulls with 9+ mins to go in Chicago. Kings are 2 back of the Grizzlies for the 2 seed atm.
????
I talk about the timeout game a lot on Twitter….but the Grizzlies have used all their timeouts (and Taylor Jenkins was refraining from taking his last one just now) and the Grizz are down 14 with 4:26 to go in the game.
Bulls still have 3 TO’s. That’s why you’ve seen coaches not take their timeouts vs Sac despite having one’s to use. They are trying to get MIke Brown to use up all his timeout’s…..and it almost never works.
And Memphis lost. Stacey King is talking a lot of shit (as he is wont to do), but he did make a point: Memphis looked rattled.
Stat of the game: Points off turnovers: Chicago 29, Memphis 0.
And pooh pooh the victories against PDX….but Minnesota is losing to Portland today down 3 with 24 secs to go….
Oh wow, Grizzlies are gonna lose to the Bulls. If we win today, only one game back of the 2nd seed.
Wolves just lost to the Blazers. That’s a huge loss in the Western Conference standings.
Bummer, because that helps the [redacted] climb.
I’d be okay with a Lakers-Kings 1st rd series. Lakers do not scare me. Take them seriously, absolutely, but they don’t scare me at all. The only team that I think can really outclass the Kings, RIGHT NOW, is the Nuggets.
Let that roll around in your noodle.
As exciting it would be to tribute and get Fitty, sense is that it probably doesn’t matter much to Mine Brown and the players as to the fans. They know that the regular season will be a memory come mid-April.
Same goes for the number two seed.
But damn, darn, dang – hitting the second season as the second seed would be awfully sa-weet!.
Agreed! I’d like to see the Kings get the 2 seed….as long as they are healthy and functioning come game 1 of the 1st rd!! I wanna see fun, entertaining playoff games!!!
