Kings vs Pelicans Preview: One Pel of a Conundrum

The Kings have ended their four game losing streak… so what now?
By | 11 Comments | Mar 2, 2022

The Sacramento Kings are in New Orleans, playing a game the day after Mardis Gras… and I’m incredibly tempted to just end the preview right there, full stop.

The Pels are attempting to climb out of the vast cavern of the 1-12 start to the season and prove they belong in the conversation as a potential Western Conference playoff team. They made trade deadline acquisitions for CJ McCollum, Larry Nance, two big time pieces to an already surging team, and have started their post All Star break with two impressive wins against the Suns and Lakers. Will this be the start of the Kings run to the 10th seed or the acceptance of their Top 5 pick potential? Will Herb Jones get the love he deserves for being a beast of a rookie? Is CJ McCollum still gunning for Sacramento for pumpfaking him out of a draft selection all those years ago???

Let’s talk Kings basketball!

When: Wednesday, March 2nd, 5:00 PM PT

Where: Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, LA

TV: NBCSCA – Mark Jones (play-by-play)

RadioKHTK Sports 1140 AM

For Your Consideration

McCollum Like You See’em: I’ve gotta say: I’m happy that CJ McCollum has finally gotten a chance to shine somewhere that absolutely needs him to be the man most nights. Sure, the Pels have Brandon Ingram and in theory, Zion Notmyson, but right now, in 2022 with a playoff race in the balance, CJ is going to be the make or break guy for a New Orleans squad who could desperately need some positive news.

And making that man is: in his seven games with the Pels, CJ’s averaged 28 points per game, shoot 52.8% from the field and 43.4% from deep during that stretch and to go along with those shooting numbers, the man’s also snatching 5.9 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game on top of it all. He’s doing everything right now for the Pelicans and while their record is 3-4 during that span, I can’t help but think this trade has already turned out great for New Orleans. With big time guys like CJ, Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valenciunas and young dynamic talents in Herb Jones and Jaxson Hayes, the Pelicans have a nice little group of guys that beat anyone on a given night and while I get why Zion might be pulling a silent Ben Simmons this season, I can’t also help but think this team is better situated than the team he last played for. Sure, bouncing his best friend Lonzo Ball down the road was a bad choice and I certainly can’t accuse David Griffin (Not Griffith, also, not related) of being anything more than mediocre during his stint in New Orleans, I also will give credit and say this team could be a well built, sustainable team… around a healthy Zion.

Will that happen? Who the hell knows. I know Zion’s a health risk and a bit demanding for his length of time served but if the shoe was on the other foot and the Kings suddenly had him on the Kings I’d be buying Notmyson merch left and right. He’s that talented a kid. I feel for New Orleans fans during this whole damn saga.

As for tonight’s game: I really interested to see how the new look Kings respond on the road to a team that’s at least close to them record wise. CJ’s a better scorer than anything the Kings have and JV is bound to pull some bush league junk to get into Domas’ head… I really think Harrison Barnes vs Brandon Ingram might end up being the deciding factor amongst the starters, with a hat tip to any Fox vs. Herb Jones minutes coming second. We’ve seen Donte DiVincenzo finally come alive – if he can continue his game against the Thunder into tonight’s the Kings are gonna look pretty decent, all things considered.

That’s it. That’s all. We talked about basketball today, which is literally always a step in the right direction for this team.

Prediction

The Smoothie King Baby eludes police after another mutilated corpse is found with his two massive teeth marks across their torso and rainbow bird feathers glued haphazardly down their arms. He’s only getting started and the police aren’t prepared for what’s next.

Kings: 113, Pelicans: 111

Might be hard to watch Harden get introduced to the Philly crowd with the Kings/Pelicans on at the same time. 🙂

The Pels are a team we’re still chasing,
Just one of the battles we’re facing.
Winning this one’s a must
Or get left in the dust
And give up on play-in embracing!

Settle down there, Stephen King.

I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say a loss tonight to the Pels should put any thought of the play-in to bed. It would put the Kings 4 games behind the Pels (5 in the loss column) for the 10th spot with 18 games to go, and just 8 of them at home. It would take a total collapse by the Pels and MVP performances from Fox and Sabonis to change things.

That being said, a win tonight likely keeps the front office’s dreams alive.

I’m glad the last couple of sentences were of a positive nature. Some of your buddies are so pessimistic even before the game is played. By the way I also like your comments more than any others. For the most part we are on the same track. Anytime you are up Grass Valley way let’s get together and I’ll buy the beers. GO KINGS!

yes, but is that really good? faint hopes for a sneak in to the 10th spot against the 9th ( maybe LAL) and even if there is a win there, a loss in next game?
Is there value here?
Right now- no way to catch the big bad bottom four. Then Pacers (tankathon galore)
Next up- Pels at 25. SAS at 24. Blazers at 25 but falling like a stone and Kings at 23.
Just hold tight and hope Blazers catch fire. Otherwise- 7th spot.
I have heard that I have “given up” I prefer to say that I am “playing the long game”
