The Sacramento Kings have signed Killian Hayes to a 10-day deal, according to HoopsHype.

The 6’5” guard was drafted 7th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. Most recently he was with the Cleveland Charge, the Cavs G League affiliate. His last time playing in the NBA was in 2024-25 when he played in 6 games for the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 9 points, 5.2 assists and 3 rebounds.

Hayes is 24-years old.

So he will compete for minutes with ‘Nique Clifford and Devin Carter at PG?

interesting. I am not a GM, never been one, don’t think I ever will be, but wouldn’t a SF/PF type be a more sensible “kick the tires” choice ?

And of course –

They did just sign Patrick Baldwin Jr. To a two-way deal. He’s tall…not sure how good he is at being an NBA level basketball player (Hint: I don’t think very good)

BB-ref has PBJr at 7-0, others have hin at 6’10”.

I found this blurb:On Baldwin: On Baldwin: He was a 5-star recruit coming out of a high school, one of the top prospects of the 2021 class. An injury-plagued freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee dropped his draft stock considerably. Baldwin has struggled with his lateral quickness, athleticism, and shot creation over the course of his career. Teams have hoped he’d utilize his lanky frame better on both ends of the floor, but his game hasn’t translated well to the NBA. At the draft combine, he recorded the lowest max vertical in history. That’s not to say he can’t contribute in Sacramento. The team has struggled from beyond the arc, and his prowess from deep will likely be a sight for sore eyes for Kings fans. Given how small the Kings are overall, he could be thrust into the bench unit as a power forward, a position well suited for his skill set. As a power forward, he won’t be required to keep pace sideward

The team needs help at EVERY position. If you’re not looking to upgrade the long term prospects at guard on this team then you aren’t being a good GM. Avoiding kicking the tires on a high potential guard because you already have Nique and Devon would be GM malpractice. I’m not saying Hayes is the answer, but the GM should be looking to upgrade every position by 2027. If taking a flyer on one of these guys works out, great. Low risk high reward move IMO.

I hope he does work out, we need another cheap useful piece to send out with draft capital to get rid of Lavine.

Lavine is going to play out his contract in Sacramento. No one should be sending valuable young assets out to get out from under that contract at this point. By the time this team has a chance to be decent again Lavine’s contract will be long gone.

Ever since his first time around he’s like the master of lateral moves.
Post trade deadline presser, “we love Dylan Cardwell that’s how successful teams are built, 6-7 pillars, valuing all talent especially ones you don’t have to use draft capital on”….next question….so Keon Ellis…..”yeah reasons and stuff why all that shit I just said about Cardwell isn’t true.”

As many of you know, Iv’e been a proponent for the front office to do something…or anything, over these last few months by offering 10-day, 2-way, or even filling the last roster spot. I’m all for this kicking the tires approach, regardless of the player they bring in. To me it shows at least someone still give a damn.

Oh, hell of low, but the last twitches of death are more alive than a stone cold dead corpse. Had the Kings not filled the last 2-way and/or roster spots and done absolutely nothing, it would have left me a feeling of complete apathy. This at least shows me there is some life in the front office.

They have to get out of their own way first and keep cheap talent. What good is undrafted gold when you give it away?

Apparently the Kings would be eligible to sign another player to a 10-day contract via the hardship exception once Cardwell misses his third game in a row tonight:

As cap expert Yossi Gozlan observes (via Twitter), the Kings will soon qualify for a hardship exception with Hunter, Sabonis, LaVine and Dylan Cardwell (left ankle sprain) all out for an extended period.

Interesting that he was drafted higher than Devon Carter and Nique Clifford and is only one year older than Devon and the same age as Nique. I guess other franchises have players that don’t work out. Although may have been a better signing at the beginning of the season than Dennis Schroder.

Schroder was so bad in terms of front office decisions. 100% agree that Hayes (for example —- a 2 year contract) + Westbrook would have been exponentially better than what they did with Schroder. That, and easily retaining Ellis with a suuuuuuuuper reasonable contract. Unbelievable how easy it seems

WiltLives

Injured big men: Sabonis, Cardwell, Hunter. So we sign another guard? Maybe Ranadive had his eye on Hayes back when. That would explain it. That explains a lot of the last few years….

Nobody cares about this season and the injuries to the big men. They are looking for players that contribute in 2027-2028. PBJ and Hayes are low risk high reward guys that fit that timeline. Have a look, assess whether they can be part of that 27-28 team and move forward with or without them. Hayes was once considered a top 10 pick and has been killing it in G-league. Maybe he’s turned a corner. PBJr, is tall, has a high release, and can shoot. Seems like he knows how to play basketball and might be a guy you can find a role for.

Same group who horrifically failed to look for players to contribute in 2025-2027

I dunno – they kicked the tires on Markelle Fultz last season and I was there for his first game, and man, he looked pretty good. Then he went on and played more games and last I looked, he is no longer in the League.

As for Killian Hayes – same sorta thing, in that, maybe he’s finally matured AND his game works on an NBA role player level. Look at Kris Dunn, Ryan Rollins, Dante Exum, Neemias Queta and Jordan Walsh, etc, etc, etc.

sometimes it takes a while for the right things to line up right, at the right time and in the right place.

Or, you could end up in Sacramento and who the heck knows?

Don’t care about this wrinkle at all. Clearly Carter will included in a trade in the offseason ((one would logically thin). So finding a potential guard to fill the void in the 2026/2027 makes sense. Roster building in the traditional sense of getting positions of need for this seasons matters ZERO. See if you can find a piece for next season, period.

I like the usage of a 10-day for getting a look at Hayes, but I don’t really like the PBJ 2-way signing. Would’ve preferred someone really athletic with good size at the forward position and see if you can develop any skills that they may have. I think PBJ is so limited athletically that he’s already hit his ceiling.

I’m good with both signings. PBJr is tall, has a high release point and has good mechanics. I remember people liked Skal, PBJr has a lot more potential to be an NBA player than Skal even if he’s not nearly as athletic. PBJr has a Kyle Anderson vibe to me. Killian, who knows? Some guys take longer to figure it out than others. It’s his last opportunity to figure it out. If he’s better than Nique and Devon (neither of whom are exactly knocking anyone’s socks off), then we’ve got an upgrade.

Totally off topic and a long way between now and then, but I want to call it now – I have less than zero interest in Darryn Peterson if the Kangz are indeed ordained with the #1 pick … load managing in college, give me a freaking break … if he’s not interested in playing for Kansas and Bill Self, you think he’s going to be fired up to play here?

i don’t like the guys dad or him already telegraphing what teams he would prefer.

However Sam Veciene posted a video breakdown of his high school tapes vs college and he honestly thinks he’s hurt and it looks like it. Which sincerely would make me want him even less than the other off court stuff.
