The Sacramento Kings announced today that they have picked up the 2013-14 Team Options for DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmer Fredette. Cousins will be entering the 4th and final year of his rookie contract next season, while Fredette will be entering his third.
The pickup of Cousins option is a no-brainer, and while Fredette hasn't performed to expectations, I'm betting that was also an easy decision for the team to make. The team has invested a lot into Fredette, and with newcomer Aaron Brooks on a short term contract, Fredette's development is still very important. It also helps that rookie contract team options generally aren't too expensive in NBA terms. Cousins meanwhile, will likely be viewing this year as a contract year of sorts, as he can qualify for a max extension before next season.
Note: Rookie Team Options are only picked up for 1st round draft picks. Isaiah Thomas and Tyler Honeycutt both signed multi-year deals for the minimum featuring a lot of unguaranteed money. Both players signed three year deals.
Another Note: Tip of the Hat to Jon Santiago of Cowbell Kingdom, who noted on Twitter that the Kings also have a team option for Francisco Garcia for the 2013-14 season. Per Larry Coon's CBA FAQ, the Kings have until October 31st to decide whether or not to pick it up. I'll be very surprised if it is picked up. Cisco's role has become increasingly diminished over the last few years and it would be hard to justify a $6.4 million option pick up for him.
