Barring a huge, unforeseen setback, it appears that Dave Joerger is set to become the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Kings are looking to finalize a deal today to sign Joerger to a 4 year deal worth $16 million. Joerger has already met with Vlade Divac and the front office and is now meeting with owner Vivek Ranadivé today, the only candidate so far to get this far in the process.
It seems the Kings have had their eye on Joerger for a while, even before he was let go from the Grizzlies. Adrian Wojnarowski had reported that the Kings were even discussing potential draft compensation to get Joerger from Memphis before the Grizzlies decided to simply let him go instead.
If Joerger decides to sign with the Kings, he will become the team's 4th coach under Ranadivé. He will be tasked with getting this team to the playoffs for the first time in a decade, reining in big egos on the roster, and ushering in a new era at a new arena. It's a lot of responsibility. Let's hope he's up for it, and let's hope the team empowers him in return.
