The grade of incomplete is kind of a copout, don’t you think? Is a GM’s work ever complete? If your team wins a title, well, how are you going to get another next season? Just announce that your work is done here, and we’re going on autopilot?
The question is essentially, is the team better, and/or positioned better than at the beginning of the season? Opinions will vary, but it’s a question that is eminently answerable.
It’s The Sacramento Curve; we’ll know more next year.
While I agree, I do think that the it wasn’t clear the Kings would be able to acquire Sabonis (or would lose Hali) before the season. So even setting aside the fact it takes teams time to gel (even the Heatles started mediocre before going to the Finals their first season), we don’t have a roster built around Fox and Ox.
I think the success of the trade will depend on Monte’s ability to reshape the roster around them and prove that it was worth sacrificing a potentially great long-term piece for a current near all-star level player.
It’s a bit of a tough trade to judge in a vacuum, because the value is probably fair. But if we drop the ball this summer, then it’s just a poor move. If Monte has an executable plan and we make the playoffs and build momentum, then it’s likely to be a good move.
I agree that it’s difficult to evaluate the micro without the macro, but the question asked for a grade for ’21-’22, so that’s what needs to be addressed if one is giving an answer. There is certainly a range of opinions that can be offered in assessing the set time-frame, and they may end up seeming completely foolish in the next 3-48 months, but falling back on “incomplete” in lieu of an answer is wholly inadequate.
The Kings were one team in October, and they are another team in April, and that goes well beyond the roster. So the question, again, is, how would (the collective) you grade the ’21-’22 season?
Even “I don’t really know” is a better answer than “incomplete.”
The Kings were a losing team in October and a losing team in April and all yhe months in between.
Monte declared his faith in Walton before the season and the goal to reach the playoffs. For this season, he gets a fat D-
Next season he’ll have his work cut out for him.
It’s definitely a copout. Not out of fear of putting a grade down, but I don’t know what to grade here. The season sucked but they are also better positioned to compete heading into next season than they were heading into this season. At the same time, the direction McNair picked could fail just as easy as it could succeed if they make mistakes over the next couple of months.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t judge McNair yet. I hate that take. I just don’t know what letter grade to give him at this stage.
If the Kings won a title, I’d give him an A+, so I think there is a pretty clear difference in grading that outcome, and where the Kings are at after this season.
And that’s an evaluation that can be argued for or against, but it’s definitely a clear answer, and I appreciate it. It doesn’t need to be assigned a grade, but since the question was framed that way…
I’ll show myself out.
Let’s see now, in this season the FO:
Traded for a 2-time All Star.
Got rid of both Buddy Hield and MB III w/o having to give up a 1st round pick (which a lot of people didn’t think was possible).
Got rid of TT to cut down on the overload at center.
Made what appears to be another successful draft pick in Daveon Mitchell.
Fired Walton and will not retain Gentry.
All positives in my book.
Potential positives for me would include:
DD becoming a good 3&D player.
Trey Lyles turning out to be a diamond in the rough and becoming a quality bench big at a decent price.
Based on the above I’d give the FO a solid B for that, maybe even a B+.
Agree mostly, in that DD may be a decent 4th guard, and Lyles is an OK reserve . Monte is clearly competent but this season a B at best due to Walton fiasco .
i just hope we can get to 4 or 5 and draft Keegan Murray or get Griffin..I know I made a comment about him that was negative, but after a lot more research think he could be a very good player.. maybe trade Holmes for a mid round pick and get a guy like Nikola Jovic ..charlotte may need an affordable center like Holmes.. I think Murray would be a good compliment to Sabonis.. if we draft a Griffin then keep Barnes until deadline to help mentor him..
Was there anything better about this season than this podcast series? I think not.
It’s in the top three, at worst.
Agreed Rob. This is terrific content.
Jerry had the perfect take re: Jason Anderson’s article. Why on Earth would you call an opposing teams GM? WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Great podcast guys. Thanks as always.
That was pretty shocking. Even for Vivek. Yikes.
Nothing shocks me with Vivek Ranadive anymore.
You don’t suppose he consulted with Mark Cuban on whether he should pick Bagley over Doncic, do you?
Seven good players. If you include Divincenzo in that group and draft a good player, that’s 6. Getting close.
OT: Maybe we won’t need to worry about hiring Mark Jackson—

That would solve so many problems for so many of us.
Another great listen . Wish you could do one per week .
