Kings 141, Lakers 137: Kings Beat LA

It only took 73 minutes of basketball, but the KINGS BEAT THE LAKERS!!!
By | 88 Comments | Nov 26, 2021

Nov 26, 2021; Los Angeles, California, USA; Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox (5) shoots a ball over Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis (3) during the second quarter at Staples Center. Mandatory Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with love, warmth and gratitude. What a lovely holiday to force us to rationally reflect on and appreciate all of our blessings, despite being a fan of the Sacramento Kings. But now that Thanksgiving, the day of good feelings and full bellies, is over, we now move on to what Will has so brilliantly coined as Hatesgiving – the day where the Sacramento Kings play the Los Angeles Lakers. All that rational gratitude you felt yesterday? Throw it out the window. Open your heart now to feel the pumping rage of disdain and disgust as we channel that energy into how much we all hate the Los Angeles Lakers. I don’t care how many years go by, or how large the talent gap between us and them becomes, or how nonexistent the rivalry may seem, it’s forever f*** the Lakers. Let’s. Get. Ready. To. HAAAAATE:

Quick Stats

Outcome: Kings WIN, 141-137

Sacramento Kings: 141 pts, 45.0% fg, 31.1% 3 pt, 65.5% ft, 32 ast, 56 reb, 15 to

Los Angeles Lakers: 137 pts, 50.0% fg, 34.1% 3 pt, 71.4% ft, 32 ast, 51 reb, 19 to

What a beautiful night to be a hater!!! It was a long, hard fought battle, but the Kings did THAT. The Kings ended up being bested in all shooting percentages tonight, but somehow managed to pull out the win after fighting through three overtime periods. The math ain’t mathin’ exactly on that one, but I’ve come to accept that basketball doesn’t make any sense and the only thing that matters is that the Sacramento Kings beat the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
The Good
  1. No Hesi Hali: It was a welcome sight to see Tyrese Haliburton looking to score tonight. We all love him for his unselfish playmaking, but we also end up begging him to look for his own shot in the offense. Tonight he demonstrated no hesitation when he had open looks and finished with 19 points on 5-9 from the 3-point line. The Kings need Tyrese to be decisive and confident in his ability to score and his point production was huge for them tonight.
  2. All Hands on Deck: Alvin Gentry played 11 of the 13 available Kings’ players tonight, getting early minutes for different bench groups. This early experimentation paid off as he was able to find a strong rotation down the stretch, notably including Marvin Bagley III over Chimezie Metu and Moe Harkless. Along with finding key guys to contribute, Gentry’s loose rotations allowed for every player to make an impact. Tristan Thompson had a great stretch in the second and third quarters, providing energy and physicality inside. Thompson finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Terence Davis had a hot start off the bench and contributed 13 points and six rebounds. And although he didn’t win the bulk of his position’s minutes, Chimezie Metu had some huge plays in regulation that highlighted his willingness to do the dirty work and not back down from the bigger Lakers. Overall, it was a great team win with contributions coming from all over the roster.
  3. Closing it Out: I didn’t know if I was going to make it if this game went into a fourth overtime. All night long, every time the Lakers tried to pull away, the Kings responded and found a way to claw their way back. The Kings’ 16 offensive rebounds were huge for them tonight, as Alex Len and Marvin Bagley III secured them a handful of extra possessions that kept them in the game. It wasn’t until the final three minutes of the third overtime that the Kings began to get some separation as they gained their largest lead of seven points. Even then, they almost gave it away on a sloppy inbounds pass that resulted in a Russell Westbrook and one, but they quickly got themselves together and finally closed the game out for good. De’Aaron Fox had a comeback performance tonight, scoring 12 of his 34 points in overtime periods. Fox hit big shot after big shot and I LOVE TO SEE IT.
The Bad
  1. Free Throws: The Kings made their free throws when it mattered most to win them the game, but shot an overall 19-29 from the line. Just one of those things where you recognize we might have all been saved from an extra 15 minutes of cardiac torture if they had cashed in on just a few of those misses in regulation.
The Ugly
  1. Regulation: If you plan on watching this game, I suggest skipping the first 48 minutes. Both teams started out absurdly bad, scoring just 20 points a piece in the first quarter, and then not doing much better by matching each other in the second with just 23 points. There was a lot of bad shooting throughout the first four quarters, and despite it being close throughout, there was not a lot of beautiful basketball happening.
The King of Kings

I am very happy to give tonight’s crown to Marvin Bagley III who had a huge impact on the Kings’ win tonight. Bagley finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while going a perfect 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. He also provided a few big defensive stops against LeBron James in the extra periods. Bagley was aggressive on the boards and showed good decision making on the offensive end. No matter how you feel about Marvin Bagley III, we can all root for him when he helps the Kings beat the Lakers.

More importantly, why did Damien Jones only get 5 minutes? Did he get hurt?

Am I the only one that laughed at Buddy slapping AD’s ass as he ran past him? Someone make a GIF out of that!
comment image

My wife loves Buddy. While we watched the game she said, “I bet he has a nice booty.” She caught her self and added “…..just like my baby.”

….

Got back into LA tonight after a long drive from Sac. We had planned to attend the game versus Portland at G1C the night before Thanksgiving, but something terrible came up and I wasn’t able to buy tickets in time. We tried to buy tickets at the arena, but after tip-off they stopped selling them. So we watched on TV at the Kimpton Sawyer bar. I was extremely bummed afterward because my wife really wanted to go, had been talking about it all week, and that would’ve been her first Kings game (first NBA game). It would’ve been a great memory hearing the raucous crowd in a win.

So as we drove down to LA, I said well maybe we can watch the Kings play the L*kers tonight in LA if we get there in time. Long story shortened, I convinced her it would be a waste of money as we’d get there a little after half-time and Holmes and Barnes weren’t playing so we would likely get destroyed.

If this idiocy by me is what it takes for the Kings to win, I guess I’ll have to keep doing it.

I would said the below play is an under-rated play by Tyrese

Its need high BBIQ to get into the passing lane, and steal the ball, it just stopped the momentum from the Fakers.comment image

So this is what it looks like when you have a real coach. Puke was useless.

Love it when Hali shoots. Particularly the 3 ball. I’ve been begging for him to put up at least 5 a game.

Maybe this is Gentry impact.

That was quite a game. Wow.

Terrific win for the Kings, horrible loss for the Lakers. How they can lose a game with James, Davis, and Westbrook going against a team missing their two most efficient starts, yikes. LeBron settling for fadeaway’s in crunch time against Marvin Bagley, that just explains the issues the Lakers face this season. They really should have traded for Buddy.

That being said, congrats on Alvin for squeezing some juice from this roster. Getting contributions from so many is the key to tonights victory. Great clutch play from Fox and Buddy, and terrific work from Tyrese, Len, TT, Bagley, and Metu. The Coach utilized the entire roster and made adjustments! amazing!

Keep up the entertaining basketball. Win or lose, that was a helluva game to watch.

Lots of great contributions from so many–agreed!

I think I saw James Worthy say on Twitter that the L*kers were not playing team ball. Pretty nice to see the Kings were the ones doing so. I’m really thankful that Gentry is helping make this team watchable again, after it was so hopeless the last few games under Walton.

And Gentry used his coach challenge at an appropriate time of the game, a questionable call in overtime (still not sure why that was a foul on Fox).
Regardless, I can’t tell you how many games Luke didn’t use his challenge appropriately.

Gentry went deep into the rotation, and that was before the OT’s.

Some of it was due to injury, but it seems he isn’t scared to go ten or eleven deep.
I like it.

That’s why I don’t understand Luke’s rotation of playing only 8-9 guys. If they plan on playing with pace, he should have employed a deeper rotation to help combat fatigue and makes players more involved knowing they can play every game.

I think with Gentry we could see this in a constant basis. He keeps mentioning about it takes a whole village with this team which means playing 10, 11 or even 12 deep.

I haven’t watched the Lakers at all this season, but I have to say, LeBron looked old. Father Time is catching up with him. So many fade aways, standing around and dribbling out the shot clock, and contested threes.

Well for that being my first Kings road game to watch in person, guess that can’t be beat!

Watching Laker fans suddenly realize in the last OT that they might actually lose was priceless.

Also, I was laughing when Bagley was originally getting the assignment of taking Lebron at times down stretch…but after awhile, everytime he wasn’t on Lebron I found myself thinking, “they need Marvin on Lebron”. Strange strange game.

I HATE being a diamond hands fan of this team. Two weeks of the most garbage basketball in the galaxy on top of 15 years of equally putrid trash, and all it takes is two close wins against .500 teams and all my hope is restored. I’m already daydreaming about our championship parade as if the Kings haven’t completely disappointed me after a few wins every single year since I was a teenager.

Kangz has got to refer to the fans also.

Coach Gentry standing on the best record of any Kings Coach. What a joy to see good clock and time out management, as well as the after time out plays the Kings are running. The use of the bench has been really good even with all the injuries to starters. Last night the tempo was really good. On the Kings feed you could hear him yell out one word when it was called for…”Go”.

I think and hope Gentry, like a real coach, is putting players in a spot to succeed. Perhaps getting g them to develop/play the way they need. IE -Bags not for ing O but passing. Hali shooting more 3s etc.

Excellent and simple point that escapes some coaches. The good coaches teach from the bottom of the bench. That is where you find difference makers and glue players. That is what the University of Christie does. A point you have noted in past games.

In maybe the 2nd/3rd overtime, Fox was playing matador defense on Westbrook for a couple possessions in a row, and it was making me a little angry. Then the announcers said he had played 50 mins and just got to the free throw line for the first time. He definitely deserved a pass for saving his energy for offense at the end there.

Not to quibble, but he played subpar D all game long.

Last night his offensive contributions compensated for it, and that was a big difference.

I completely agree, even before overtime, there were many pick and rolls where it was just an easy bounce pass between Fox and the help defender for a dunk or layup. Not sure what the defensive strategy was supposed to be but it felt like Fox would be a step behind then the help has to aggressively go to the ball leaving a big opening for the roller

Whether you hate or love De’Aaron, there was something for everyone last night. This team is what I have called (at least in my own head) the Rorschach test, and there’s no better prime example of that than De’Aaron Fox both last night and on the season as a whole.

Calling De’Aaron’s performance a very mixed bag last night doesn’t do it justice. He’s just all over the place right now on both ends. The Kings simply need more and better from him consistently if they are going to win more.

I still can’t fathom how he has the ball with 10 seconds to go in the 1st OT and the Kings don’t even get a shot up. I don’t get it.

I like what Gentry’s doing, and I think the players respect him as a father figure, but that play was coaching as much as anything, Gentry should’ve called timeout or had Hali run the play. At the very least he gets a switch for Fox to try and create. Hopefully, they learn from it.

I’m going to disagree on that point. That’s what Gentry does, and frankly, I agree with it. The reality is regardless of how you draw up a play, you have to be able to get a shot. There’s no greater likelihood of the Kings getting up a better shot in a designed halfcourt set than De’Aaron seeing something in real time and making a play.

That said, if you do need a head coach to draw up a play to get you a quality shot in that scenario, you’re not an All Star PG IMO.

I think there are times and merits for both ideas. Once it settled in with nothing there though, they should’ve called timeout. As all of the greatest coaches and players throughout history have done before, in that scenario.

In the post game Gentry said that was a mistake and he should’ve called a timeout. It was his fault and he took the blame.

Gentry can say whatever he wants, but he purposely didn’t call a TO there.

Did he not call for a TO from the time out that didn’t happen?

Of course he did. My point is if Gentry wanted to call time, and thought it was important enough to call, like that near violation Haliburton and Jones had at the end of the Portland game, Gentry calls that TO.

But my hunch is he wanted to see how De’Aaron handled that situation as something of a teaching moment I guess?

I dunno. Your points (and Rosevillian’s for that matter) are all fair and one’s I agree with. I just think Gentry purposely didn’t call that TO regardless of what he says to the media. He’s trying to win games not just against the Lakers on a Friday night, but the rest of the season, too.

Playing a full rotation of many players is so obvious , especially on a roster like the Kings which is not particularly top-heavy, glad Gentry has some common sense. Walton being gone is already a huge win, dude was a black cloud from day 1 until the end.

Team is playing hard and showing a lot of fight on these last 2 games. I am going to withhold my excitement for now. Walton had to go. But, the team had some nice stretches with Luke last year as well. Portland and the Lakers are no longer the same teams of years ago. Both are really mediocre much like the Kings are now. The Eastern Conference is far more dominant now. For the first time in years. Gentry is doing a good job playing everyone. He actually has no choice. There isn’t any All Star talent on this team. If the consistent effort is there from everyone, Kings will start beating the bad teams on a regular. Occasionally beat the good teams. In turn this could be a .500 roster. Definitely a play in team. This player by committee probably won’t work against the really good teams too much. Definitely won’t work in the playoffs. Gentry has been for the most part a terrible coach through his career Detroit, 6 years(1 year over .500) Phoenix, 5 years (1 year over .500)
Pels, 5 years(1 year over .500)

i have a feeling this team gets the playin and he’s extended 3 years. I definitely see this as a real possibility.

Here’s hoping that terrible career has taught him what not to do.

Marvin f’n Bagley… I cringe every time he shoots, I laugh when I see him defending LeBron… and he proved me wrong everytime. Well done 35.

I’m happy I decided to turn this game on. I checked the game thread and it wasn’t exactly making me want to watch. I caught the fourth quarter and OT’s. So glad I did, no matter where we are in the season beating the L*ckers is always fun to watch. GO KINGS!!!!

I told my wife last night, “the Kings can lose every game but they have to beat the Fakers.” Thank you for doing that Kings!

I think I would prefer they win 42 games after this, also. You’re welcome to call me crazy for that if you like.

I won’t be the one to call you crazy…but, you may be nuts…! They have a 2 game winning streak. Who says no to 40 more?

I was talking about the whole season! But I have no issue with a 42 game winning streak either!

Had they just beaten horrible OKC and SA, they’d be 10-10. But we’d likely still have Walton, too.

I still thinks 37-38 games. Kings have a ton of games against high level teams remaining. Probably enough for a playin. I think it going to come down the the Wolves and Kings for that final playin . Kings fans are going to start rooting for Wolves losses now.’lol! The conference will get much tougher in The next few months: Murray back for Denver, Kawhi back for Clips. I still think the Kings need to make a major move. I see a few teams that will push hard to stay in the playoff hunt being active at the trade deadline. I don’t think the Kings will do much unfortunately. Especially, if they are just a couple games out of .500.

I was going to watch the 2nd half, but then my son took over the TV for PlayStation. Despite my efforts to shame him as a bad Kings fan, he wouldn’t budge. Figures that the Kings would win in triple OT and that Fox and Bagley would play great.

It sounds like Doug has been assigned to Bagley. His on-man defense looks different. That would be a fun story if it is a thing and continues.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I wouldn’t mind him starting next game to see what’s what. And then just hope he doesn’t revert to wannabe Giannis Bagley.

Great rebounds, great corner 3s, occasional moves to basket, improving defense. Increasing market value

Well, I was wrong. I said the other day that the Kings could only beat 4-5 teams in the entre NBA and then they went out and beat two not on my list. Caution: bad teams always have a stretch or 2 where they look competitive. Then either regression to the mean or talent comes home to roost and they go back to .401 winning percent.
Hope: new coach. Last 2 games clarified why fluke was not a good coach. Kings have a couple of skilled guys and then a bunch who are NBA players but all about the same. And they are un-balanced. In this case, the coach has to actively and aggressively try to create mis matches and confusion, constantly adjust and not react. Fluke reacted all the time. Gentry makes the other team react. Some interesting lineup options: Buddy on AD, Bagley !!!! on LeBron !!!! Three centers played. Gentry pushes his lineup, acts and not reacts, plays multiple guys, goes deep into bench, not the 8-9 fixed rotation.
Kings were without 2 starters
This is better but is this a turnaround- next 2-4 games will tell.
On the other hand, LAL, despite all the stars, do NOT look good. Out of synch. Flashes of individual brilliance but not sustained
You know Buddy can really shoot it- and sometimes he can really make it. Fox looked like old self. Bagley lost all confidence with fluke.
