Kings 136, Magic 111: Conjuring Up an Easy Win

Harrison Barnes and the Kings exploded offensively against the young Orlando squad.
By | 98 Comments | Jan 9, 2023

Jan 9, 2023; Sacramento, California, USA; Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox (5) takes a three point shot over Orlando Magic guard Markelle Fultz (20) during the first quarter at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The Sacramento Kings’ got their offensive firepower going early, and for the first time in three games their opponent couldn’t keep up. The Kings hit a franchise record 23 three pointers and Harrison Barnes finished with 30 points on 11 of 13 shooting as the Kings (21-18) cruised to a 136-111 blowout of the Orlando Magic (15-26).

After close home loses to the Hawks and Lakers over the weekend, it was good to see the Kings take control of the game early and never relent – Sacramento took the lead at 10-9 with 9:07 to go in the first and never trailed again. And while the Kings defensive effort and awareness struggled in long stretches tonight and may not have held up against a playoff team, it held the young Magic at bay and right at their season scoring average (110.4).

Domantas Sabonis finished with 12 points, 10 boards, and 8 assists, while De’Aaron Fox had 11 points and 9 assists. While the two combined to shoot just 10 of 25 from the field, their combined playmaking was huge as the Kings had 8 players finish in double-figures and the team shot 53.6% from the field and 50% from deep. The squad showed up offensively even when the stars were struggling with their shots. Barnes’ 30 points, which included 6 three pointers, was huge – the Black Falcon seemed to make a big three every time the Magic showed any aggression.

To Sacramento’s credit, they also won the battle on the boards – a 48 to 41 rebounding advantage – and outscored Orlando in the paint 46 to 41. The Magic had big advantages in the paint and on the glass in their first matchup in Orlando in early November, so it was good to see the Kings make some real improvements.

Rookie-of-the-year favorite Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Wendell Carter Jr. made Sabonis’ life difficult in the post, and finished with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while Markelle Fultz had 16 points and 5 assists on 8-10 shooting. Orlando’s young, positionless squad has the pieces for a real run in a year or so, but couldn’t keep up with the Kings tonight.

Keegan Murray had 15 points, 3 boards, and 3 assists with 5 made threes, while Malik Monk came back after his one game absence to score 14 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. The Kings bench had some real bright spots offensively tonight, especially from the big-man duo of Trey Lyles (14 points and 5 boards) and Chimezie Metu (11 points and 9 rebounds).

The Kings will now face two straight home games on Wednesday and Friday against the Houston Rockets, who sit at the bottom of the NBA standings at 10-30.

You are awesome.

This was my exact thought.

lyles and Metu have a good thing going. Metu was a nice backup 5 for a long stretch then suddenly went to no minutes. I think it was all about coach Brown giving Holmes another opportunity to prove himself and earn a spot. Sadly Holmes failed miserably. Other sad thing is that I think it cost us a couple wins. Several close games lost that Holmes contributed next to nothing. Metu gets after the boards and is a threat on offense. I hope to god he continues seeing all back up 5 minutes moving forward. His defense is exceptionally better than Holmes as well. Way better on the perimeter and go’s for blocks, alters shots. Personally I don’t think we need to trade for a back up 5. Metu is good there. If we make a trade and use assets it should be to get significantly better with a significant player that demands at least 30 minutes a night. I’m happy with this squad.

An addition should be a 3/4 that is proven. Someone who takes minutes away from Keegan/Lyles/Barnes/Huerter. That’s a significant player that actually moves the needle. Otherwise just stick with what we got and focus on how to collectively play better defense.

Chris Biderman has a story in the morning’s Bee (electronic) about how Metu fell out of the rotation and the decision and conversation between Metu and Brown that led to his return. Very informative.

Brown told him that he had relaxed too much in December, that he was faster, more athletic and more skilled than the people he played against, but that he needed to bring energy and enthusiasm every time.

Great article. Thanks for putting it here. Good to hear he’s back and all of that. Hopefully in a more solidified role now.

That said, this is the first time I’ve looked at Mike Browns coaching and thought, “well that could have been handled better”. Still all on the mike Brown train but seems like he could have just had the conversation with Metu that he had last night 2 weeks ago without benching him for 10 games. Spared the team the struggles and frustration and earned a few more wins. I’m sure there was a lot more at play there though then just “I thought he was being too relaxed so I benched his ass for 10 games” with the Holmes situation making things sticky, trying to give him another opportunity to be part of the rotation. On Paper Holmes should undoubtedly be absorbing every single back up 5 minutes. Sadly for him he has done nothing to keep himself in the rotation. Metu on the other hand is making an impact consistently every time he plays. It’s pretty cool. Good for him. Good for this team. Good for the fans. If Metu stays in the rotation which it seems like he will now then the kings will be a better team and win more games.

side note: Poor Holmes. Must have hurt seeing Metu almost get a double double his first game back along with being awarded the Defensive player of the game chain in the locker room. Sadly I don’t think Holmes sees the court for the rest of the season unless he’s traded. He had multiple opportunities that were boldly and emphatically squandered by shitty play with no energy and no impact.

Agreed on the handling of Metu by Brown, this should not have been a month-long situation. Also, who takes Holmes at this point?? Any team would want picks or good players attached to his deal. The Kings may just have to bite the bullet for the next 2.5 years.

I’ll (respectfully) take the contrarian point of view.

Metu has shown multiple times over the past few years that he:

1) Can be stubborn at times
2) Sees his skill set differently than most of us on the outside
3) Has a tendency to lose focus and try to coast on his athleticism at times

In addition, Mike Brown knows him (professionally, and possibly personally) better than most, having coached him on the Nigerian national team.

Also, though I’m not the Kings team Psychologist (my beard game isn’t nearly in that league), I do have that background (along with some sports coaching). At this level, everyone has a pretty decent-sized ego, and a lot of guys are either used to getting their way or getting away with things.

It’s possible (even likely) that if MB noticed Metu coasting too much (not a word he’d use with the press, but that’s likely what was going on) that sort of thing isn’t going to be solved by just having a conversation with him. The ego can easily ignore that. It has to hit where it hurts, and really gets the player’s attention.

Playing basically no minutes for 10 games is how you get (and hold) that attention.

What I love about the move, is that it shows Mike Brown is looking beyond this season. Yes, everyone wants to win right now. But sustained winning over a decade or more requires a culture change – even if doing the things to make those changes hurts a bit in the short term.

Everything I’ve seen from Mike Brown aligns with his desire to build something long-term and sustainable around here. If you want to play for Mike Brown, there are certain things you’re expected to do. If you don’t do them, you don’t play.

That’s how Adleman did it. That’s how Popovich does it. That’s how it should be done.

And I’m absolutely here for it.

Uh. I’m not sure what this sentence you wrote means and the sentiment behind it.
Makes me fee obligated to say this. Florida sucks. Seriously people. Florida is a Shitty place. Feel lucky you don’t live there. The weather is nice. Kind of. It’s muggy as hell when it’s not hot as hell. And then there’s hurricanes every year. South beach and the keys have beautiful beaches that’s it. The people there suck though. Florida lacks humans with high functioning brains.

if you moved there thinking you would like it… you would regret it. Terribly.

What an silly comment to state that Florida Lacks humans with High Functioning Brains.. i live/split time in two states California and Georgia and have ton of friends in Fl who are incredibly smart, kind and successful.. plus the beaches on the panhandle are the nicest beaches. 😂 I was just having a little fun.

I don’t live in California.

I don’t live in Florida. Thank god.

sure there are nice people in florida. All humans have a brain. The humans in Florida just have brains that operate at a lower level of optimum performance than most other humans. It’s science. There are way better beaches than Florida beaches all over the world. Way better. Including California. So many people in other states want to think that their state can compare to California. Their states can’t. Is it elitist when it’s just fact? Smarter more talented people live in California than florida. Period end of story. It’s not even close homie. The land mass that is California is exponentially better more divers and more beautiful than the land mass of florida in every way. It’s jut the way the planet formed. Nothing personal for people with low functioning brains that live in Florida to get upset about.

It can be if you flaunt with facts or smack others with facts in the face.

The land mass that is California is exponentially better more divers and more beautiful than the land mass of florida in every way.

Although many people would agree, that is a matter of taste. I know people who love rocky deserts, and I certainly know people who absolutely love the Everglades.

There’s a lot of Statism going on in the US, and a lot of City-ism too. It’s as if everything is a f-ing contest to you. Just enjoy your city or State, why try to convince and argue with everyone else that your place is the best? Do you want all these these people to become your neighbors?

In that vein; don’t come here! Holland sucks. Bad weather, flat land, combatitative pleople, overrated cheeses and weak beers. Especially in the Rotterdam area!

Just playing around with some elitist fact dropping. My bad.

ps. I don’t live in California.

pps. California has Rocky desserts, along with Yosemite, Joshua tree, incredible beaches like Malibu as an example, Big Sur, the sierra mountains, sequoia National park and Golden one center.

Florida is shaped like a limp penis.

There is no competition. Jesus made it that way.

Just jumped away from work computer and this thread is great… Love Our Dutch contributions and whenever anyone gets on “white males” for all of the shitty things we have done in the past I retort with don’t blame me, blame the Euro’s they were the people that came over and started it all; in fact we kicked them back to the UK.

I will be leaving California for good next September and it’s a love hate thing. I love love Cali for its diversity of people, topography, cultural events, food, our willingness to be accepting etc . Also have hatred/frustration of things but no need to digress.

there are great things about a lot of states and Cali does rank very high in a lot of areas and I will mis many things as this has been my only home…

to Woodstock GA. My wife lives there; it’s a second marriage and we have been together 15 years and married 10 but never lived together because we shared custody of our kids. My boys are in College and my oldest is in good place so I am moving out in Sept when my sons transfer from a school in San Luis Obispo to Sac State. They will move into my house and live here until they graduate. I will move out but keep a room so I can visit and get out of my wife’s hair. I used to be excited but now it’s nerve wracking leaving the place I grew up. More than you wanted to know…

If you plan on coming to San Francisco for a weeklong vacation, plan on six days being spent trying to find a parking place in Golden Gate Park. Use your final day to spend on counseling to process what you saw in the bushes.

Agreed. It didn’t have to be perfect, but it was necessary.

I particularly like the sequence where they fight for offensive rebounds, which grabbed 2/3 offensive rebound in one play….love the way they fight hard….

Also, I like the below play…..lots of players movement, and off-ball movement…….

Free Mezi! He passes my eyeball test when he plays which I can’t say for the other back up bigs. Maybe his deep dive stats suck but he seems to bring energy and offense. More minutes for Trey too.

I think Metu is better at his spacing; Holmes seems to move the wrong angles a lot creating bad spacing when a guard drives and this takes away the option for the guard to dump off because the defender almost takes two players because of the bad spacing. I didn’t notice it with Metu

I noticed it some with Metu last night, but much better than Holmes and he hasn’t played for a month, its to be expected.

Finally this Kings team held their inferior opponent to their season averages. Last night the Magic scored 111 points on 45% shooting and 31% from three. For the season Orlando scores 110 PPG while shooting 47% from the floor and 31% from three. The Kings defense wasn’t anything exceptional, but they did what they were supposed to do.

And honestly. that alone would be enough to propel this team from 42-44 wins, to much closer to 50 wins. I think coach gets frustrated because he knows they don’t have to become the 80’s-era Pistons. They just have to be *average*.

Loved Matthew from beyond the arc near the end. Because at the end of a satisfying win, there’s nothing quite like a little Delly Trey.

Was at the game and the arena went crazy when Delly hit the three. Was for sure the icing on the cake for a blowout win.

the idea of Mo Bamba as a trade target has been kicked around lately. Last night he did not look like an nba player. Neemie might be better than him.

anyway, Metu?

The only players Monte should consider on trading are Holmes, Dais and Len. Keep the rest as they are working well together, If we could get a rim protector and rebounder like Chris Boucher I would be happy.

I agree. I’d rather they not make a move than make a rash decision. I don’t take Monte as a rash decision-maker.
Chances are, they aren’t going to win a title this year, so think more long term.
If there is a game-changing offer out there, sure, go for it.
Otherwise, work on the edges. A reasonable trade for Plumlee would be helpful.
Who knows how they can bolster the team in free agency in the offseason or what kind of help they can get through the draft.
Think long term.

Whenever they get a chance to move Holmes, I think they’ll do it. Davis and Len are expiring contracts which is not bad to have, and although they are both tradeable, TD has contributed to some wins and might do so again this year.

I feel the past few weeks with Holmes backing up Sabonis has really hurt his value around he league. A team would have to be pretty desperate to want him at this point, and it really just comes down to his contract. At 2 more years at $25M he is going to be hard to move. if he is unplayable as a 15 minutes per night backup, who is going to want him at $12M per year?

The only way I see him being traded at this point is part of a larger deal or a trading of mutual bad contracts. As en example: Duncan Robinson, Gordon Hayward, Hardaway Jr, etc.

Buddy (who is playable) and his contract were able to be moved because Hali was the center piece. I think it would take a package like that to move Holmes as well in order to get something of value. Just a butt-pulled and not at all advocating for example: Holmes and Murray for OG Anunoby

This ^^^^ If the plan was to increase Holmes trade value, it failed. If the plan was to get Metu playing harder, it took way too long. Kings either live with Holmes on the bench for 2.5 more years with that cap hit or attach him with picks/better players. Not a good situation for Monte.

To your point, maybe there is a team out there devoid of future draft assets (Mavs?) who see value in Holmes are willing to take on his deal if it cam with some future 2nd round picks. Holmes and a future 2nd or two for an expiring Dwight Powell works.

Would it be worth it for the Mavs to take on $24M and Holmes as a backup up to Wood if he came with some 2nd rounders. Would it be worth it to the Kings to give up some 2nd rounders to get out of Holmes’s next two years of contract?

To be fair though, nearly every team in the league seems to be saddled with at least one highly-flawed player with a big contract. The key is finding a trade partner whose contract problem player has a (limited) skill set that matches what the other team is trying to do.

That, or as is much more common, being thrown in as part of a larger deal, which still often results in a trade of bad contracts.

It might be easier to move him in the off season or next year’s trade deadline. Worst case scenario might be to cut and stretch his final year (rather than taking on a bigger contract or messing with the team).

In fairness to Richaun Holmes, when he signed the deal (August 2021) it was reported with this:

In his first two seasons as a King, Holmes averaged 13.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 64.1% from the field.

A season and a half later…. and well, he is a shadow of that player, for whatever the reason. I believe Coach Brown and his staff have been hoping to see that level of play but it is not there.

Maybe, just maybe, someone will figure that this is a team related issue and not a player related issue – though in truth, I consider that a pipe dream.

Most likely, if you trade a29 year old overpriced bench big, you will get something equal in value unless you add more value to the trade.

I predict the Kings stretch Richaun this Summer.

there’s no reason to stretch him this summer. it’s the following year (his player option) when there will be a financial pinch.

In think it’s his mostly not playing for the season that’s hurting his value after not playing alot of the previous 3 seasons on top of that.

He’s a buy low project at this point. But that’s why I don’t think the Kings will worry either. It comes down to what possibilities that are available to McNair. Can you take back serious money? Are draft picks on the table? (That means negotiating with Atlanta realistically.)Which players can you get that move the needle for you? Are they worth the price?

It’ll be interesting to see how McNair plays this deadline.

I find it interesting the Hawks just signed Derrick Favors to a 10 day. They are flush with big men so it has my wheels spinning.
