Kings 124, Warriors 123: MALIK MONK

Kings complete 24-point comeback to secure a spot in the In-Season Tournament knock out rounds in the best and most dramatic way possible.

The inaugural In-Season Tournament gave us a spicy one tonight, folks. Kings. Warriors. Draymond Green making yet another dramatic return from yet another earned suspension for yet another display of foolery. My desire for a Kings’ win couldn’t be higher for a late November game. The Kings and Warriors, meeting for the third time so far this season, entered tonight’s matchup with the highest stakes since their playoff matchup back in April, both hoping to secure their advancement to the knock out stage of the IST. Entering the game, there were many scenarios that could result in the Kings being eliminated from IST advancement, but there was one foolproof way for them to punch their ticket: Just. Win. Let’s see how they did:

Quick Stats

Outcome: Kings win,124-123 and advance to In-Season Tournament knock out rounds as champions of Group C

Sacramento Kings: 124 pts, 45.6% fg, 34.1% 3pt, 64.3% ft, 25 ast, 46 reb, 10 to

Golden State Warriors: 123 pts, 47.6% fg, 40.5% 3 pt, 86.7% ft, 25 ast, 53 reb, 20 to

I feel as if I just awoke from a fever dream. My palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy!!! No vomit on my sweater, however, thanks to the Sacramento Kings just pulling out the longest, most dramatic, and ridiculous comeback. After cowering to the Warriors in the first half, where they trailed by as much as 24 points, the Kings spent the third quarter slowly chipping away at that lead until they entered the final quarter within single digits. The fourth quarter felt like scripted television. The Kings finally found some success in their small ball lineup at the same time as Draymond Green had his scheduled meltdown. After getting grazed on the chin, Green rolled around in fake agony for five seconds before spending the next 90 berating the referee until he was finally given a technical. He followed this performance up with a frustration foul on Malik Monk before heading to the bench. It was at this point that the Kings finally realized who they were and used this momentum to make their final push. In final possessions, Malik Monk came up with a huge steal in the back court that found its way back to him for a 3-pointer to put the Kings down just 1 point with 37 seconds remaining. And because the universe needed to find its balance, and good really does prevail over evil, Draymond Green then turned the ball over with 22 seconds left on the clock. Malik hit the game winning shot in the most Malik way – an acrobatic, falling away, bank shot to give the Kings the final lead. Beam Team comeback complete.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

The Good:
  1. Group C Champs: The Kings only needed to lose by less than 12 points to advance out of Group C to the knock out rounds of the In-Season Tournament. And for a lot of the game, it didn’t seem like they were going to do that. It wasn’t until the end of the third quarter that they finally got over the 13-16 point hump that they spent most of the game trailing by. Luckily, the Kings left no questions of their standing for the IST and they did what they needed to do: They. Just. Won.
  2. The Comeback: You can’t complete a dramatic comeback without trailing by 24 points first, right? That’s what I’ll keep telling myself. As painful as it was to see the Kings get big brothered by the Warriors for the first 24 minutes of this game, it was also mega impressive to see them adjust and overcome that bad habit of getting bullied by this team. After shooting an icy cold 7-22 from the 3-point line, the Kings made a more concerted effort during the second half to get into the paint and get to the line. They ended up shooting 30 free throws in the second half, a result of them shying away from the 3-point reliance. De’Aaron Fox finished with 29 points and 9 rebounds after 17 trips to the stripe. Their defense also picked up in the second half as they gave up just 4 offensive boards after giving up 5 just in the first quarter. Overall, it seemed like the Kings realized they didn’t need to be afraid of this Warriors team and found the right ways to claw their way back and win.
  3. Kevin Huerter: Kevin Huerter was phenomenal tonight because he was consistent. Whether it was when the Kings were getting bullied or when they were on their runs, Huerter played with the same effort and composure to help his team win. He finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists on 4-7 from the 3-point line. Especially during the dark times, Huerter was a constant ray of hope for this squad tonight.
The Bad:
  1. Forced Play: During the worst stretch of the game, the Kings were forced out of their style of play and looked like they would never be able to shake the power the Warriors seemed to have over them. While the Warriors showcased their best offense with the ball moving and shots falling, the Kings appeared frantic, rushed, and out of sorts. They looked nothing like the high efficiency offense we just saw a few nights ago. Andrew Wiggins (29 points, 10 rebounds, 11-18 fg) and Klay Thompson (20 points, 9 rebounds) both had get right games tonight, because of course they did. Stephen Curry did his expected damage of 29 points and 10 rebounds on 4 made 3-pointers. Conversely, until the end, the Kings struggled to move the ball with the flow that we are used to, and when they did find open shots, they just weren’t falling. Luckily, that changed just enough in the end for the Kings.
The Ugly:
  1. Free Throws: I will be having nightmares about missed free throws tonight. The Kings shot 27-42 from the free throw line tonight. That is 64.3%. That is a D- grade. Do you know what would happen to me if I ever brought home a D-? I don’t even want to imagine. So many times tonight the Kings worked hard to get to the line, only to leave free points on the table. Even down the stretch, when just a few more made free throws would either get them the lead or extend theirs to a more comfortable place, the Kings just couldn’t convert. This all set up for a perfectly dramatic ending, but my heart would prefer otherwise. I mean, it’s a Tuesday night for crying out loud.

The King of Kings

Sasha Vezenkov was the answer tonight. Off the bench, in just 15 minutes in the second half, Sasha led the team with a +/- of +17 and was just the spark the Kings needed. He hit two big 3-pointers at lightning speed and came up with two huge blocks on the defensive end. The flurry that was Sasha tonight was exhilarating and he deserves all the praise for tonight’s big win.

a bit “nasty”.
My wife got mad at me for yelling at a dud fan- when the game was over to “get the fuck out of here!”
She probably did not deserve that but I am tired of their fans acting like entitle children for years. and this one arrived with dud gear and was cheering in the first quarter with every dud basket. I just fumed for 3 quarters and let lose my best Malik.
I did not do the two words above but close.
years of frustration I suppose

Your wife’s right. Be respectful. I had to move to Seattle last year and took my son to the 49ers game here. It was not fun, people were horrible to us. It’s ok for opposing fans to cheer their team. It’s also ok when they have to watch their Warrior team fold and lose a game to our Kings 😉

You are correct.
Here is my “but” my excuse- I am so very tired of all the gestures- “night-night”, the mocking of other teams players and fans, their sense of entitlement. And the fans act like that as well. They say “we are just playing with joy”- no, you are mocking our team and fans.
The woman did not deserve my wrath. I should have celebrated by myself rather than do the duds thing to her.

Be sure to save some of that justified vitriol for the thousands of Kings “fans” who sold their tickets to the Warriors’ bandwagon fans. Without knowing where the game was played, you’d have had a tough time guessing it, in the first half, especially.

I felt relief more than exhilaration at this one. The second duds game was very disappointing because I thought we deserved that before
klank hit the last shot. We did not deserve this at all. Got out shot from filed, from 3 and OMG at the FT line. Fox missed like 8 FT’s. 8 !
day- day did have his scheduled meltdown- he simply cannot help himself.
and coach steve clearly enables his behavior.
This win felt dirty, sloppy, tainted but I will take it. Now I am going to watch the game again on DVR

this was how did the Kings win but how did the duds lose?
and Kings still in 6th spot.

Almost as fun as Game 1, thanks in part to the Warriors fans in front of me stamding up and making “night night” gestures, asking “what happened to the beam” near the end of the 1st.

They left very sheepishly at the end.

THIS!

I’ve been listening to KNBR since the 80’s. There was a brief period of time during a couple of “we believe” / Baron Davis years around 2006-07 where maybe 15% of calls were about the Warriors, and then…dead silence until 2012-13. Bay Area fans couldn’t give two shits about the Warriors previously and it was completely evident on the airwaves.

There has always been far more interest in the Bay Area around the Niners and Giants. Sharks fans seem to support their team more consistently, too. I know a couple of long term Warriors fans and they tend to be fairly classy. But these bandwagon fans are insufferable. I can’t wait until age ravages their old-ass roster completely and their fanbase goes back to ignoring the Warriors. Their arena is shiny but boring as hell and their fans are second worst behind the Lakers.

Last night’s game was as gratifying as they get. Fuck the W’s right in their earholes.

Live by the 3, die by the 3, live again by the turnovers and somehow survive despite the FT’s. Hard to explain this one, but I am not complaining.

Confession: I often bet $10 on the other team thinking that if the Kings lose at least I’ll win a little. Often the Kings win and I happily lose the bet. Tonight I took the duds at +2. It was the perfect scenario with the Kings winning by 1 tonight. Game sucked until about halfway thru the fourth and even then were all thinking get within 11 and make the tourney.

Draymond Green was the King of Kings tonight. I hope he plays for the Warriors forever. When he flopped, whined and got T-ed up he put more energy into G1C than a Monk poster dunk.

I hope this game helps the Kings get out of their own heads about playing the Warriors – the first half was just rough to watch in large part because they were playing weird and scared. Blitzing Curry in the second half helped a ton (I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t do this – the rest of that team isn’t great any more) but hopefully with the win they aren’t get getting brain-fucked by this team anymore.

My Buffalo Bills spent 20 years getting this same thing from Tom Brady. Even after the bad man was gone it took a while for a New England game to be a normal thing for both the players and the fans. A playoff game that involved throwing the Pats down an elevator shaft repeatedly was what was needed to achieve catharsis and I’m hoping to see the same with the Kings, but, you know, quicker.

Yeah, my alternative headline for this article would have been “Draymond Green Propels Kings to Victory.” The guy has become a caricature of himself. No one will miss him when he is gone, not even Warriors fans. Take the frustration that we used to feel with Cousins and douche it up 100x. That’s Draymond Green in the here and now.

As a Patriots fan with a Brady jersey, I could always assume a win against Buffalo. Miami was never a given. Now it’s my turn to be humble. Still a huge fan but now rooting for losses for better draft picks. Mac Jones and Zappe are not the answer. It used to be I had my Patriots and Red Sox fandom to make up for the Kangz. Now it’s the other way around.

This should be the start of a 10 (including the two previous wins)…maybe 12 game winning streak. We got over the GS hump. We have a tough schedule coming up, on paper, but I think we gained A LOT of confidence with this win and we should ride that confidence as far as it takes us. And Keegan should be back soon. We need to create some distance in our division. The top teams will only get better as the season goes on.

GO KINGS…great game. Absolutely great game

I lost faith after 1st half, as the team played awful….

Fox and Barnes with some really careless turnovers…..

And the Dubs played with more energy in 1st half….

Luckily, that we got two sparks (Monk and Sasha) off the bench in this game…..

Most importantly, we are in National TV broadcast and win the game, which is even more huge….

Let the league knows about the Kings, and Fox can start to get recognized and can get those Superstar call….

Fox had two turnovers in forty minutes, and Barnes had only one. I don’t have the kind of memory to say definitively whether or not any of them were careless, but I do feel confident in suggesting that they weren’t a huge factor in the Kings falling behind by twenty-four.

I think that the advanced stats also had Fox holding Curry to 5 pts. on 2-9 in 25 possessions.

Honestly, Fox is playing at another level, maybe another two levels. If he stays healthy he will become the Sac. Kings GOAT sooner than later.

Sooner, definitely.

Fox was giving fits to any ballhandler within reach last night. He was credited with only two steals, but he was jabbing the ball away and gumming up the works the entire game.

We are lucky that Fox is the kind of person (not just player) that he is, and responded well when finally given a coach that knows how to get the best from him.

(No shade to Dave Joerger, who I think did a very respectable job. There just wasn’t enough talent to get over the hump.)

Yep. The toughest thing to gauge in a player is their inner nastiness, and the overwhelming aversion to losing. Chris Webber was probably at the top of the list of Sacramento Kings when it came to inner nastiness (Ron-Ron had both an inny and an outy). And to your point, Brown came along at the right time to weaponize Fox from baseline to baseline, as well as in the locker room. They have placed a lot of faith in each other, and they are rewarding each other, themselves, and those around them for that faith.

both Curry and Fox were mic’ed up for the game. I listened to the re-broadcast. Curry talked a lot ( of nonsense, like play hard guys ! and they are double teaming me!) and Fox was never put on the mike.
I think there is a bias or Fox just plays and does not talk b/s. for the cameras.

Monk should start. I know he’s a savior off the bench but dude is one of the three best players in this team. He’s the assassin when we need it. Big games, big moments, fox and monk will be the ones doing it. I know he’s in at the end but his energy and firepower could be big in the starting lineup. Brown won’t even try it.

Monk is more important as 6th. man than a starter. What he brings off the bench is so important. Another note: I thought Sabonis did not have a good game. He seems tyo have these when we play the Warriors. Needs to get out of his funk and play with more confidence.

Starting or not, Monk will get the minutes when needed. He is currently at 24.1mpg, and played 26 last night and 30 the previous game. They need him to cover the minutes when Fox first goes out, and then they usually play together for stretches.

I have to admit, I was ready to turn the game off in the first half. I just didn’t need that kind of energy. In the end, I cracked another beer and was overjoyed with the second half. What a comeback by the Kings! This win felt special.

Malik Monk with his “no No, NOOOO, YESSSSSSSSS!” last shot will be one for the memory books. Overall, Fox needs to practice some free throws, Sabonis needs to get Looney out of his head, Sasha needs to be apart of the rotation, Mitchell does not, and it’s a good thing Lyles is back!

It sure was a rollercoaster game.

As for Davion, I just don’t see him being needed on the roster. He doesn’t seem to fit what the Kings are offensively, and defensively he has been pretty bad this season. His minutes need to go to Keon, and I think some of those minutes will be going to Sasha if the Kings want a bigger lineup.

I admit that I turned off the TV when the Warriors went up 20 in the 2nd quarter. I turned it back on when I checked the score online and saw we made it a 10 point game near the very end of the 3rd. I just wanted the Kings to beat the Warriors SO BADLY tonight, after having to play them so many times already and losing a handful of heartbreakers, I’m just so glad we came out on top for once. I was afraid that the Warriors were going to forever be this demon that the Kings wouldn’t be able to overcome mentally, but I hope this win will give them that confidence boost they need to not play so scared against them anymore. They are clearly an aging core on the decline, and we need to take advantage of that going forward. And seeing Draymond Green serve as a momentum changer with his crying/flopping for us and turning it over in those final seconds is just the icing on the cake.

I do feel bad for Davion, but yeah, I just don’t really see him as part of this rotation going forward. The good news is that so long as we are winning, you won’t be hearing guys complain about their lack of playing time.

I think Davion has value ans think our offense is not suited well for him… great defender and a system offensive guy…

You are a better person than I, I’m in ATL this week (moving in Jan-Feb) so it was a late start to game and I had spent 2 hours dealing with xfinity internet (1:51 minutes ) earlier and was in a $hitty mode because their service is horrible, so when the kings went down by 21 or 22 I said F it and went to bed since I needed to start work around 6:30… so I missed the fun…

Do you think Trey should possibly start at PW in place of Barnes? I think Sasha is getting to understand how to play in the NBA. Still a work in progress but making some major strides. I wpuld try and trade Mitchell and maybe 2 seconds to the Raptors for Precious Achiuwa. Precious would backup Sabonis at center. He is very athletic plays ghood defense and can run the floor.

The thing I like about Barnes starting is pace and comfort with the rest of the starting 4. I’m not sure Lyles has the quickness and court awareness of Barnes. On paper Lyles might be the better player Per 36, but I think Barnes fits the system better. IMO, the same can be said for for Ellis backing up Fox over Davion.

I was out to dinner with the missus and missed the first half, so I got to watch this team play a damn-near perfect game last night. All Kings dance!

OMG I turned this game off multiple times. The Warriors just get under my skin. Thank the Gods for Malik Monk and Sasha and Fox. Huge win. Let’s go win this IST thing. I’ll be at the Clips game tonight with a much better attitude than if we lost last night.

Having Curry “mic’d” up was great. He was all cocky about how they needed to this and that to win by 12, like they were playing some high school team. Their entire team (outside of Wiggins) is unlikeable. Arrogant, cocky, obnoxious, etc. Can’t wait for them to retire and see the Warriors go back to bottom feeders for years.

It’ll be interesting to see how many Warrior fans who joined the bandwagon when they got good will still follow the team once that core retires and they become a rebuilding lottery team.

The ones that know who Clifford Ray, Nate Thurmond, Al Attles, etc. were will stick around. The rest won’t. That said, G1C is much more full with Kings fans these days than it was a couple of years ago, so…

The one thing I noticed about last night and opening night is that, while there were Warrior fans all around the arena, the amount was definitely a “the teams are close in distance”, not a “this is Golden State West” number of fans we’d been seeing for much of the last decade. Kings fans are definitely coming back to games in droves.

There were also definitely fewer Laker fans at that 2nd home game this year, too.

My in-laws went from being Duncan-era Spurs fans, to Warrior fans, and are now interested in our Kings. It drives me bananas because all of their Spurs gear is collecting dust, the Warriors gear is seen less and less and my father-in-law wants Kings gear for Christmas. I’m thinking of giving him a Wemby jersey, but I honestly don’t think he knows who he is.

Get him a custom jersey with the home team reading “Whoever is in First Place” on the front, and “Bandwagon” as the name on the back.

One thing that really chaps me as of lat is Klay’s shoulder shrug. He does the “get off my back” shrug when he makes a play and has a bit of a scowl when he does it. I doesn’t recall seeing it in their championship years but it is very present this past 12 months. It strikes me as a “f@#k off” gesture and is worse than Curry’s “night night” thing.

This is from my wife you pleases me to no end. She watches 90% of the games with me and when I was coaching was in the stands being my greatest fan. She also notices Klay's shrug and scowl. She also can't get over Curry's peacock stride. I used to like to watch Curry when he was playing with confidence but now he has gotten so cocky I can't watch him now. I also coached my players to have all the confidence in the work and when they got cocky I sat them down. Didn't take long on the bench until they with a little help figgured it out. I don't think Curry will never know.

Klay’s game has gone to about 80% flopping. It’s sad to see. (Not that I like the guy. I don’t, but still it’s sad when a aging player has to resort to making flopping a huge part of his game.)

The TNT announcers weren’t making things much better by snarky proclaiming “All the Kings need to do is not lose by more than 11!” or “They have to be able to beat the Warriors” every two damn minutes. My blood pressure was like a bypass candidate.

When making it to the next round of the in-season tournament by losing a regular season game but getting the point differential to advance becomes “acceptable”, then the tournament is a failure. It only cheapens the regular season and sends a message that the regular season games don’t matter as much. It was the most annoying part of the broadcast.

That’s simply because of the nature of tie-breakers. We beat the Wolves, Wolves beat the Warriors, and if the Warriors beat us, then it’s a 3-way tie. Only difference between that and a regular season three-way tie is there is no way to use division/conference, because teams compete strictly in their own group. That said, even in the regular NBA season, point differential is one the list of tiebreakers for playoffs if need be.

I was saying similar about Wiggins. He can kill us at times but he’s not a whiny douche like little sleepy, prancer Curry, “what me, fouled?” Klank, or dreckmond.

Dubs and their fans got what they deserved a big L! Some of the most obnoxious fans in all of sports, most entitled frontrunners ever. They will all disappear when Dubs suck again unlike Kings fans that followed and supported team through shitty times. I get so mad watching these games but remind myself to enjoy them really thought we lost but felt great to win! Monk is our best #2 option down the stretch he has that killer and clutch that only him and Fox really have.

Disclaimer: Dispensing rotation advice that runs counter to Mike Brown is an exercise in futility, and it only makes one look stupid. So away we goooo!…

I’d be really interested in a front line rotation that was primarily Sabonis, Lyles and Vezenkov, with Sabonis and Lyles getting the start. Small doses of McGee/Len as needed against teams that have a little more length up front, and doses of Murray when you go small. Honestly, I think that Lyles is as laterally quick as Barnes at this point, longer, more aggressive defensively, and is more confident with his shot.

Barnes’ role at this point is that of a backup wing when you need more size than a guy like Duarte, Ellis or Huerter can provide. He is also positional depth. I know that this probably tanks Barnes’ value, but this team is about on-court results now.

I leave Monk as a guy that doesn’t start games, but he sure finishes them. His playmaking is valuable off the bench, and that minimizes the need for Mitchell, who seemingly has the wrong offensive toolkit to work in this offense – he’s just not a ball movement guy. And props to Kevin Huerter for his improved defense, as he now has the ability to still contribute even when his shot is off.

Fox / Huerter / Murray / Lyles / Sabonis
Monk / Vezenkov / Barnes
McGee-Len / Ellis
Duarte / Mitchell

Disclaimer disclaimer: I am probably rushing the Vez thing, but I think that it should/could happen come early next year. Also, I would not be averse to seeing Colby Jones move up after he logs a little more G League time.

I’m a huge fan of Edwards. He’s ready when called, busts his ass on either one of the tough defensive assignments on the floor, never tries to be something he’s not and takes his shots as they come.

Minus the lousy free throw shooting, that was the most satisfying win I’ve experienced in a while. I can not stand the Warriors, so I’m all for anything we can do to speed up the collapse of their empire.

I thought Vezenkov had one of those “better than the box score” type games as his impact was greater than the box would indicate.

I also liked throwing multiple bodies at Curry defensively, while pressing his dribble and even trapping him. No superhero mode for Steph last night.

Great win!

Oh, and fuck Draymond Green.

I want to give full credit to Draymond for the King’s win. Without his technical late in the game (and his turnover), the fourth quarter would have ended up as a tie and overtime. I know it doesn’t work that way perfectly, but let’s give Draymond the King of Kings award. Credit is due.
