Draymond Green suspended for Game 3

The league responded to Draymond’s stomp.
By | 118 Comments | Apr 19, 2023

Apr 15, 2023; Sacramento, California, USA; Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green (23) looks for a foul call after a play against the Sacramento Kings in the third quarter during game one of the 2023 NBA playoffs at the Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The NBA announced late Tuesday evening that Draymond Green is suspended for Game 3 between the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors. The suspension stems from Draymond Green stomping on Domantas Sabonis’ chest in the fourth quarter of Game 2. The league also cited Draymond’s “history of unsportsmanlike acts.”

The Sacramento Kings also announced that Domantas Sabonis is questionable for Game 3 with a sternum contusion. Sabonis has proven his toughness all season as he continues to play through a fractured thumb, so it will be surprising if Domas misses the game. Hopefully the extra day off before Thursday’s Game 3 allows Sabonis a little more time to heal.

Without Green, the Warriors already-thin front line will face a big challenge. Kevon Looney got in early foul trouble in the second half of Game 2. If the Kings can attack Looney again in Game 3, the Warriors only other big man is JaMychal Green. The Warriors may be forced into going with a super-small ball lineup, but the Kings have thus far chosen to play their own game and exploit Golden State’s lack of size. Alex Len’s minutes have been a big boost for the Kings in the series.

Game 4 is schedule for 7:00 PM PT on Thursday,  April 20th.

Update:

Joe Dumars explained the suspension further to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski:

Good decision. The NBA can’t allow this type of behavior to go unpunished. Taunting the fan base after you intentionally look to injure a player is unacceptable. As I said yesterday, many national writers and GSW players should be ashamed of themselves for rationalizing this behavior. It has no place in a league that wants people to have their kids watch games.

The taunting and other after-the-fact antics are what did it, IMHO. The league office still vividly remembers the Malice at the Palace. Yelling “P***y!!” at fans (who might be intoxicated) who are already very angry at you and standing up/leaning forward in their seats, security on-hand to try to discourage further confrontation, is akin to throwing gas on a fire. If Draymond had shown even one ounce of restraint (let alone remorse) after the stomp, he wouldn’t have been suspended. But instead he fanned the flames, basked in the chaos he was causing, and then went on social media and mocked the guy he’d just got ejected for stomping on. He didn’t realize how BAD this made the league look? Or that Adam Silver himself, who remembers the Malice, was at the game watching him the entire time? Draymond got suspended for being Draymond, and it’s about damn time. He’s a disgrace to the game.

Thank goodness for whomever was that person in white that immediately ran in front of all the rabid fans and was shouting at them to stand down. You can see people clearly returning to their seats.

agree.
the entire dud management and players have defended his actions, have stated that DS grabbed daymoron as he was running at a full sprint. National pundits have defended him. This is some sort of Stockholm Syndrome (especially for Poddle who whooped it up with him. Hey, poodle, who knocked you senseless?)
This was ugly and intentional and he had been trying in the first game and earlier in game 2 to stomp on DS.
The duds are desperate. This is what they got- junk it up, take the narrative away from their game failures and put the focus on day-day and in the meantime try to injure a player.
As Nate has said- the duds don’t want the pace to go faster, and they can’t survive playing slower.
With draymoron out, it is time for Kings to take advantage of the weak ass bench.
of course, he should be suspended: the act itself, the lack of remorse, the antics on the court afterwards and the LONG history of similar behavior.

I learned that as long as it doesn’t happen to a player on your team, a good chunk of players and fans thinks it’s ok to stomp out someone’s rib cage

Ok, you WOULD defend him.”

The people who annoyed me the most were the ones who said, “But Sabonis grabbed his leg,” as if that excused Draymond stomping on his chest.

I found those reactions to be lazy, desperate, and illogical.

Sabonis got a technical foul for his actions. That was his punishment.

Draymond wasn’t given a free roll to try to hurt Sabonis.

I’m surprised that the possible damage Draymond could have done to Sabonis hasn’t gotten more press. Draymond is 230 pounds, and he put the full force of his weight on Domas’ chest when he launched himself off of him. Cracked ribs? A broken rib puncturing a lung, or even worse, an artery near the heart? Heart damage itself? This literally could have ended Domas’ career or even killed him if Draymond’s foot was shifted an inch or two.

My wife doesn’t care for basketball and only has indulged me in semi paying attention to the games because I’ve been suffering since the year we were married. (May 2006) …. Suffering because of the losing, not because of the marriage…

Even she was shocked to see that and keeps saying “I can’t believe that Green guy…”

I think 9-10 people who don’t know any of the history of the players and have no context of the emotions of the game would look at that play and say – “What a jerk.!”

There was the play the last game where donkey swiped the ball out of Domas’ hands and instantly started yelling and clapping directly in his face and Domas just kind of laughed it off and walked away, with kind of an “ok?” type of gesture. We’re definitely in his head. You can’t rattle the ox, and a donkey damn sure isn’t beating an ox.

I think this is where having Mike Brown as our coach helps in this series in particular. He’s privy to what Draymond will try throughout a game, especially the playoffs. He probably has these guys ready with what to expect, how to counter, and how to go on the offensive in terms of the mental battle with Green.

Personally didn’t think a suspension was warranted but I also think Green made his own bed. The stomp in the first place was avoidable. The antics afterwards even more so. You do all that knowing your reputation and that Adam Silver’s in the building, you invite whatever comes your way.

From the Kings perspective, selfishly you have to take advantage. Personally this series is still very much in the balance regardless of 2-0. Razor thin margins separated both game 1 and 2. Kings were great in leveraging Looney and Draymond with Sabonis last game. With Kevon now the sole assignment have to capitalize. Get Looney in foul trouble again or needing help from the wings, points are there to grab.

In short the Dubs defensive anchor isn’t on the floor. Cant let their shooters go nova at Home, but otherwise Kings have to see the opportunity in this. Personally a split is necessary in San Francisco. Expecting 3 wins is a lot, but the caveats are what they are. Go win game 3.

I would have expected the formal notification of the suspension to address the incitement of the crowd as an aggravating circumstance. A bit surprised that it wasn’t stated explicitly.

Just my opinion:
Draymond, by his post stomp antics was practically begging to be thrown out AND suspended.

He’s earned flagrant fouls every playoffs. His rep – he owns it.

He made his actions about Draymond, not about his team. He let his team down. Again. That’s his reputation, that’s his legacy – the amazing good with the unfortunate bad.

Surprising call by the league. I had assumed they would let him skate, as they have the other couple dozen times he’s tried to intentionally hurt players. Wonder if plans on trying to injure another one of the team when he returns.

Draymond is garbage player who is enabled by a garbage coach.

In all fairness to Morant, I’d venture a guess that there are a number of players in the league who own firearms. Posting a video of one on Instagram is what the league got mad about (coupled with punching a child).

I’d be surprised if a healthy percentage of pro athletes didn’t own firearms. That’s their right, and violates no NBA rules.

Morant’s issue is that he’s a complete dumbass, and thought he could get away with doing something so galactically stupid. You watch: He’s going to idiot himself out of a long career.

I also think part of a bigger issue is that he traveled with the firearm and did not properly declare it, so it could be stored per federal aviation regulations

My guess, if he just done the stomp and gone to the bench and took a seat, he be playing tomorrow. Taunting the crowd, the standing on the bench and cursing at them while grabbing his junk is what pushed it over the top. Had a fan reacted to Green’s behavior in the same fashion we be talking about the “Throwdown in Sactown” and would have long forgotten about the stomp.

Green got of light, IMO.

A suspension was the only option. Equate the ankle hold to an arm hold, happens nearly every play. Then equate the stomp with a punch. You don’t get a free punch when someone grabs your arm.

Agreed, simple logic here, but Warriors fans don’t get that. Holding an arm. leg, whatever may be a foul, but punching another player in retribution is more than a simple foul, it’s assault with intent

The major difference between holding an arm or a leg is that holding a person’s leg can cause them to trip and fall. Holding a person’s arm is not the same. That being said he absolutely deserves the suspension due to the possible severity of injury he could have caused to Sabonis. And of course the ridiculous antics after the fact.

Holding someone’s arm as they pull away is a great way to strain your shoulder, which happens all the time in the NBA, shoulders get tweaked in just that way.

Some days it’s good to have your team’s “special adviser” be the NBA Executive VP. Beats the hell out of whatever “special advice” Chris Mullen had to offer.
Also, Draymond Goon is a clown.
Also, also. you don’t need to be a rocket surgeon to know that if Sabonis were to go down this team was going to be in some trouble so kudos to Coach for getting Len some warmup burn in the last month of the season to get him up to speed as much as possible. After re-watching games 1 & 2 its pretty obvious the Dubs have been hacking away at Sabonis all series either trying to get a rise out of him or flat out injure him “accidentally on purpose” and its pretty plain to see. From Gary Payton Jr.’s constant ramming into him, Klay pushing him every chance he gets, to the obvious clown antics from the Draymond Goon, they’ve been targeting Domas relentlessly, so its a good thing the guy is built like a fkn oak tree and has about the most level head I’ve seen. He’s the anti-DeMarcus, completely unflappable. I sincerely hope we go into their building tomorrow night and serve up some crow and humble pie to those arrogant ass fans.

I’m done spending any more mental energy on Stompy O’Kicknuts. It’s more dipshittery from someone literally famous for junking up games with dipshittery, and I’m not letting it distract me from enjoying the run of this special Kings team any longer.

I will say this: I never really understood other fanbases’ contempt for Warriors fans before. As a Giants fan, and someone who liked the Run TMC team as a kid when everyone else was wearing Bulls jerseys, who has a lifelong Warriors fan in his close family, I could never muster the contempt that others seemed to. But now? Now, I get it. A sizable portion of these people are literally disconnected from reality, gleefully passing heaping platters of bullshit between each other and loudly mocking others for not seeing the truths buried inside. I have always used the euphemism “Laker brain” to describe that level of turbo-delusion in sports fandom, but I might need to rethink some things.

I believe you have to differentiate between the fanbase at large and those on Twitter (and maybe other social media). Twitter is the worst, and unfortunately Kings fans are making up for lost ground rather quickly.

If the Kings keep getting better, we’ll be viewed as obnoxious as any other fanbase of succesful franchises soon, I think.

It’s talking heads on national news outlets, too, though Twitter is definitely the worst of it.

Kings fans will definitely become the villains one day; even the Warriors fans seem to have forgotten how obnoxious we were to them during the Greatest Show on Court era. I just didn’t expect people to start demonizing the Kings this quickly. We haven’t even won a playoff series yet, and suddenly Sabonis is a dirty player compared to… Draymond Green?? I feel like I’m losing my mind.

I showed the video to 3 people yesterday who don’t really care about either team. All three said it was “just a step” and was justified by Sabonis grabbing his ankle. Even after showing it to them full speed and slow mo several times from different angles, they excused it. Only after I said how would they like to get stepped on in the ribs did they start hedging about it.

I just don’t understand how we look at the same video and come away with such differing views. Yeah I’m biased of course, but it’s a terrible look. There were several different things that could’ve been done other than stepping and LAUNCHING oneself off another person. But nope, grabbing a leg seems to justify getting curb stomped.

By that logic, Domas would have been justified in breaking Klay’s fkn arm for shoving him to the ground on that play in the first place.
I think that’s the part that’s been pissing me off the most. Klay Thompson’s dirty tactics are what started that whole thing.

I must not be seeing good angles, because I don’t see where Thompson really pushed him to the ground, it appeared, that he kind of backed into him, which caused Domas to lose balance but I may not have good angles

It is quite sad, and I believe social media has made this worse, people see all of these crazy apeshit responses to things and the reactions it get; specifically likes. It seems to be a self fulfilling manifestation of unnecessary vitriol rooted in the need to be noticed. Wow that sounds like something. Mark Jones would say.

anyway, I just don’t get it. We no longer seem to ever have open and honest discord where people try to understand others views.

Warrior fans and the media can cry all they want. This was the correct decision. Man didn’t just stomp, he used Sabonis as a trampoline and then egged on the crowd right in front of the commissioner.

Need to win game 3. Lets do this!

As several commenters have noted, the post-stomp antics were so over the top ridiculous that Dumars had little choice in suspending him, especially in a TNT game with Silver in attendance. Draymond just can’t help himself, and he has hurt his team again.

GSW are in a funky spot. On the precipice of getting bounced in the first round. One legacy player in Draymond started the season by sucker punching their best young player on the team, and is ending it by being a ridiculous clown in a crucial game. When he declines his player option, I see no reason that the Warriors make him a 3-4 year contract offer. Is he even a 15m/yr player at this point?

A second legacy player, Klay, has one more year at 46m, and will likely expect an extension. Watching him try and keep up on defense has been a little sad these two games. Can he defend guards any more? What is his game worth really as he plays thru his mid thirties?

Their best young player, Poole, regressed fairly significantly this season. His 30m/yr contract to be a sixth man might work on a championship contender, but a sixth seed paying that is untenable.

They traded Wiseman, when they lack youth and size in the front court. Kuminga is tantalizing, but still very much a project. Moody has not shown much that makes it certain he could be a rotation player for a good team. I don’t know if it is realistic to develop those players and pay a monstrous tax for the old guard on the decline and still think there is a championship thread. If Myers is truly out this summer, where does that leave the team?

Having the Dubs implode after a first round loss to the Kings would be quite the story. Being able to take down the Lakers in the second round would be too.

I might have to start calling Monte “Michael Corleone” for the way he is taking care of all the Kings family business in one fell swoop.

Suspension was justified.
The stomp was shitty.
The jeering display was shitty.
The Warriors high fiving and cheering on Draymond was shitty.
The failure of the Warriors coaching staff to stop Draymond from acting like an ass was shitty.
Klay’s response was shitty.
Kerr’s claim of being unaware of the situation was shitty.
Entitled assholes.

I’d prefer to beat (sweep) the Warriors with Draymond on the floor.
Sadly, I truly expect Draymond to intentionally injure Fox or Monk or Huerter in Game 4. That sociopath will be focused on ruining the Kings chances.

Agreed, the Kings need to watch Draymond like a hawk in game 4, because he’s going to be looking to cause chaos. And the Warriors crowd will treat him like a martyr, fueling his antics even more.

Mine as well. He’s going to be in front of thousands of sympathizers and enablers, looking to “make a statement” and prove his manliness. In his own mind, he just got shown up by Sabonis, and he can’t let that humiliation go unanswered. He subscribes to an “honor culture” where any slight, real or perceived, must be responded to with escalation and disproportionate force. The refs better keep those whistles at their lips the entire 48 minutes or else this series is going to turn very, very ugly.

I disagree. Green may be many things, and among them, he is exceptionally bright. He may want to do something (or not), but he’d be putting his career at risk if he does anything so blatantly purposeful as the stomp, particularly so soon after it happened.

Please don’t come at me with “but he already did something like that so there” takes. The landscape is radically different now.

Better than nothing, I suppose. Should have been for the series. I hope he gets fined enough to make it hurt. Dray is a goon. Always with the extracurricular crap trying to hurt people. Since Murray hasn’t done much this series, I’d like Brown to use him to try to get Looney in foul trouble. I expect iron man Domas will play. Put a QB flak jacket on and get the game 3 win.

The surety with which a lot of people suggest that Sabonis’ toughness will carry him through (checks notes) being stomped on the chest by a 250-pound man seems odd to me.

If you’ve ever had a bruised sternum, you know any contact to it is blindingly painful, and we’re not talking about square dancing here. Sabonis catches numerous shoulders, elbows (and now feet) to his torso in every game, and that’s not going to stop now that he’s considered to be a “dirty player” by (checks notes) idiots.

I have little doubt that Sabonis will give it a go, but wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not 100%, or if he plays fewer minutes than he averages.

Yeah. Like NinjaFetus said above, I simply cannot wrap my mind around all of the people minimizing that contact. I winced and yelled when I saw it in real time: he loaded his leg up and thrust it straight down on Domas’s ribs, then put his full weight down and jumped off.

Draymond’s a fucking liar, as are the players (past and present) defending him. Anybody else who is running that “it was just a step” line has clearly never been active enough in their lives to sustain a chest/rib injury. Even a minor intercostal strain made me miserable for weeks.

I stretched wrong once and couldn’t take a deep breath or raise my arms above my shoulders for a week. Getting older sucks!

It wouldn’t surprise me if Domas either sits this one out, is on a minute count, or can’t finish the game. Still hope we win regardless, but the dude has to recover at some point.

I’m hoping the Kings smell blood and come out with equal or greater energy in game 3. It isn’t a foregone conclusion because Klay and/or Steph can hit bad shots in bunches, even when defended well. But this is a great opportunity for the Kings to take the series. I’d love to see them win by 20 @ GSW.
If the Kings can get a couple of guys hot (Keegan, Monk, Lyles, Huerter, or Barnes), they can absolutely destroy this team.
The things that have disappointed me so far in this series, Keegan’s inability to get open shots. That has to change. I’m glad he’s not taking bad shots but if he can get going it will open everything up. The second thing is all the BS plays that the Warriors make. The stomp is one thing. But Steph is a master at drawing opportunistic, unnatural, non basketball fouls. Whether it’s the rip through when an arm is extended or that especially egregious one where Davion was guarding the inbound and had his arm a little over Steph and Steph dove into the arm to get the out of bounds foul (shot and the ball), or an awkward out of control dive into a defender, I hate that stuff. Play basketball and stop with the antics. I know all players do it, Steph is just especially good at it. It’s ugly basketball.

It just *feels* like Klay isn’t a game-changer anymore, and with the Kings being so well-coached and active, there seems to be a LOT of pressure on Steph to hit his 3’s. If they’re relying on every single outside shot by Steph they’re going to get swept.

Klay hit several big shots down the stretch of both games 1 and 2. He’s absolutely still a game-changer, even if he’s lost a step. This is the last hurrah for GSW and they know it. They’re not going out without a superhuman fight.

I agree with you about Klay. He’s certainly not an elite defender anymore, and injuries have slowed him enough that he can’t run himself free the way he used to.

But that SOB can still shoot the ass of the ball, and he can still drop ten threes in a game and make it look easy. If Sacramento can simply limit his open looks, then you just live with the more ridiculous makes. Same as with Curry.

Save for some end game heroics, I think the Kings have done a relatively great job of limiting open looks for their shooters.
I think this is the difference in the series.

I just LOVE the fact that the Kings have quickly formed an identity, and I’m here for it. They’re not the villains, not dirty, not complainers…

They’ve literally become “Fuck Around and Find Out.”

Or as Ben Stiller sort of said, Kings ain’t playin.

I love the fact that this team comes out ALL BUSINESS with no straying from the path.

This team is a machine. A fucking machine.

Hats off to all the coaches and any players showing leadership. That shit worked. I’m down. I bow before you and say “Do your thing bro.”

Anybody making fun of The Beam has probably forgotten what it’s like to win and embrace the silliness. I lived through The Process silliness, which was great, but this Kings season has far exceeded any of that, and anyone making fun of The Beam deserves nothing but silence. I have NON-SPORTS fans posting “Light the Beam” on Facebook. My nephews in SC and MD posted on our family text thread that they are now Kings fans, one said they’ve never seen an environment like they’re seeing in Sacramento right now.

Thank you Monte Mcnair.

The Beam and the DPOG chain are two sides of the same time: over the top, garish, ridiculous, and completely lovable and awesome as a result. They are the Kings both celebrating and making fun of themselves at once. A perfect representation of Sactown’s humble and down-to-earth character.

Same. Was listening to Lowe Post Podcast today and it was a big point about how lost in all of this is how great Kings looked defensively and offensively. Like they just blew everyone’s mind and proved everybody wrong. I wish we could just move on with this.

He forced the NBA’s hand. I don’t think either team wanted this. The Kings want to beat the W’s with their full team. It means that much more…and King’s don’t want to hear excuses when we do actually beat them and win the series. But Draymond legit assaulted him man. He stomped on his chest, taunted the crowed, and showed no remorse. They had to do something or they create a tolerance for what is unacceptable behavior. There is NO excuse for what he did. It was NOT an accident nor a basketball play. It was a WWE play. Suspend him and warn him that he now has 2 Flagrant Tech points. A 3rd and he’s suspended again…

kingfish5
April 19, 2023 2:33 pm

If you can listen to “The Game” right now. They are awfully defensive about Draymond saying it is a set up by the league for the Kings to win. Must be tough when the shoe is on the other foot for the Warriors.

Well color me surprised, the NBA got this one right. We had a spectacle on our hands and this Stomp was nasty and could have been malice in the palace 2.

sabonis plays rough, but let me tell you he takes as much as he gives just look at the dude- bruised and scratched. NBA refs do their best, don’t like making it about them unless they steal a series from us and admit to it
