Today is Draft Day. The first round of the NBA Draft kicks off at 5 PM PT. This year the draft has been split into two days, so the second round will be held tomorrow afternoon. Draft Day usually involves a flurry of trades and rumors, and we’ve already kicked off with a couple big moves last night.
The Knicks are sending four unprotected picks (2025, 2027, 2029, 2031) a 2025 protected Milwaukee first, a 2028 unprotected pick swap and a 2025 second-round pick for Mikal Bridges and a 2026 second-round pick, sources tell ESPN. https://t.co/E4pTq3wCMP

More in deal: Houston acquires 2029 more favorable of Dallas and Phoenix first-round pick and acquires right to swap Houston first-round pick for less favorable Dallas first and Phoenix first, per sources. https://t.co/jUR0f5lSjM

We will use this open thread to discuss any non-Kings news throughout the day. Rumors, trades, anything about the draft or the league. If any Kings-specific news happens, we’ll get a separate post up about it as soon as we can.
Updates:
Free agent F OG Anunoby intends to sign a five-year, $212.5 million contract to return to the New York Knicks, sources tell ESPN. Deal will include a player option and a trade kicker. pic.twitter.com/q5VcjOeryW

C’mon Monte!!!!
Back in the lottery as God intended!! I don’t know what’s going to happen but I can’t wait to see if cash considerations will be involved!
I am fully ready to convince myself tomorrow that it was better that Monte didn’t make a deal and overpaid, and that there’s a real chance that the guy selected will be a stud who – together with the FA gem that Monte surely will snag – will take us to the next level.
This one hits close to home.
We have the same roster but we didn’t over pay.
It would be shame to lose Duarte or Jones.
A damn shame at that
Edit: /s
Yes. The Kings definitely don’t want to make a move until it’s too late.
It’s like my dad said set your goals low so you’ll never be disappointed
My dad used to say, “Strive to be the best you can be…or hang out with a group of people that make you look better by comparison.” He would then look around the dinner table at us and say, “I’ve made my decision and I’m pretty damned happy with it.”
Cash is the man. He belongs in a Kings uniform forever.
Love Cash. Plus, perhaps they’ll take another guard and there’s the excitement of selling off a second round pick or two.
Put up or shut up time Monte.
A quick list of draft day rumors:
1) Houston wants Durant and PHX may be listening
2) Brooklyn holding a fire sale (Finney-Smith?)
3) Warriors want to move Wiggins and Paul
If he can be had for some 2nd rounders and like Duarte or Davion, do it.
Drafting a PG at 13 would make more sense then.
Or somehow getting PG13
Get Day’Ron Sharpe.
He’s good but IMO Isaiah Stewart is better. Can play center or PF.
I was reacting to the comment that the Nets may be holding a fire sale.
yeah
A no-three mediocre-D player like DFS seems like rearranging the deck chairs a bit.
Yeah, I’d rather go 13 / Huerter / Duarte for 26 / Cam Johnson.
I like Cam Johnson a lot.
Better than Kuzma.
Wonder if Mike Brown would want Wiggins back on his team.
I have concerns that Wiggins may never again be a reliably-solid player. He’s got some personal stuff which I hope can be resolved, because he may still have some good years ahead of him if he can get to a place where he can focus on basketball.
As usual, I have taken leave to stay at home to watch the draft live….and I just hate the spoilers….
Always feel excited and nervous whenever the Kings get lottery pick….
Hopefully, Ron Hollands falls to the Kings at #13…….
If not DaRon Holmes.
I’m hoping it’s DaRon Holmes that’s pretty faithful of you to take time off
I like Holmes more than any prospect since Harry Giles, which is a little scary. He seems like a cool dude.
I have band practice during the draft tonight (womp womp) but I’ll be obsessively checking my phone between songs!
I would love it if Holland fell to the Kings. If not, I hope they trade the pick for a PF or trade back for multiple first rounders.
This is so exciting!!!!!!!
#13 picks in Sacramento Kings history:

(The second guy)
I would take Corliss-sized value at 13 this year. Fine player while he was here, begat Doug Christie when he left, a pro’s pro when he returned years later.
At the time of the 1995 draft, the Mitch Richmond led Kings (next highest minutes and ppg was Walt Williams followed by Spud Webb) were core less when they drafted Corliss.
Unless Monte LOVES a small guard (take your pick, many to chose from) I am hoping for a big, would settle for a wing.
If a guard is taken, it’s either a trade impending or we are bring McNair to an intervention for Small Guard Anonymous (and bring SGA).
Is a drafting a solid back up, maybe starter an adequate “swing” ? or does it have to be a boom or bust pick, in your preference?
I’m not looking for boom / bust. I’m looking for the pick to be used (either via selection or trade) to fill the most glaring holes on the roster: long wing and stretch 4. Note – the acquisition of a legit stretch 4 without losing Barnes kind of takes care of both issues, as Barnes would be a pretty nice bench wing behind Murray, while Lyles would back the 4.
Barnes, Mitchell, 2024 second, 2025 second, 2027 first for Kyle Kuzma or use #13 pick but get back their #26 pick.
Lyles, Vezenkov, 2026 first for Isaiah Stewart.
FA Naji Marshall
Either get DaRon Holmes at #13 or Wizard’s #26
Starters: Fox, Ellis, Murray, Kuzma, Sabonis
Bachups: Monk, Huerter, Marshall, Holmes, Stewart. Also Jones, Edwards, Len.
Great idea!
From “Scoreless Corliss,” to Kings legend, he was great! (both times)
I know today is a day of smoke and misdirection, so I’m trying to figure out how the Holmes promise/Nuggets at 28 slant fits in. I don’t see him lasting that long, but then again, I’m not an NBA GM either!
Check out this from yesterday! It talks about that whole situation.
I read the KH article, but it’s unclear to me where exactly the promise came from, assuming there is one. Seems like it would’ve come from someplace higher than the Nugs at 28, but there was nothing to shine light on that. The Kings are mentioned, but not identified as the ones who offered the promise, even as speculation.
Not sure how that one works out either?
Seems like he goes earlier and that deal doesn’t work.
My dream day is trading 13 plus future firsts and Huerter and/or Barnes to get Dejounte Murray. Then, trade back into the first to get Daron Holmes. If we are trading with ATL, we have a tiny amount of leverage where we can lift the protections on the pick next year. They probably expected that pick this year and didn’t get it so that could be a difference maker for them in a whirlwind of trade considerations on Draft Day.
I’d guess Atlanta is thankful they dodged a bullet in not getting a mid-1st in pretty poor draft class. I’d like to see the protections removed too, if for no other reason than just to get an otherwise bad trade completed and move on.
All the more reason to lift the protections and guarantee they get our pick for next year’s draft! I agree though, I just want that trade to be completed.
Hard to call it a bad trade when Huerter was such a big part of breaking the drought.
I like Dejounte Murray IF he is willing to play next to Fox.
If they can’t sucker somebody into trading for this pick, then I hope McNair uses it to draft the best player available, regardless of position. This team needs a lot more talent if they’re going to compete. More talent also equals more trade assets.
Best Player Available now, or projecting BPA 3-5 years from now?
Best player now. I don’t think there’s enough talent in this class to even start to think about 5 years down the line. Heck, there might not even be enough talent out there at 13 to land somebody who’s still on an NBA roster in 5 years.
Really?
The one problem with going BPA regardless of position, is that there is a very convoluted path to playing time at guard unless they trade multiple people at the position (and the guards they would need to trade probably aren’t worth enough as assets to fill the hole at forward).
More like “Opine Thread,” amirite?
It’s possible I may not be right. Feel free to opine on the topic.
Nikola Topic?
Excited to hear about what player the kings almost traded for today. I think McNair is smart to continue leaking about trades he almost completed despite the fact that he does not have the assets to make those type of trades.
It’s a great strategy to to distract fans from asking why the GM of a team whose missed the playoffs in the three of the four years under his tenure don’t have any additional assets to use in trades.
I don’t have any faith that this front office will be able to pull off a trade today that will be of any impact on the roster because they have not been able to do so in the last trade windows. Here’s to year 35 of Harrison Barnes starting at PF.
Monte evaluates players, determines a value for them, and doesn’t pay over that value. He refuses to overpay, and also refuses to accept less for his own chips than what he thinks they’re worth. It’s a highly disciplined approach. Some would call it too conservative, and I suppose that’s fair. But it’s the reason the Kings have no albatross contracts on the books, no untradeable assets in uniform, and have never swapped X for X-1 out of ignorance or spite. It’s a big reason they are now–finally!–in the ranks of respected NBA franchises after nearly 2 decades of tomfoolery and mockery. Complain about HB all you want, but he’s not a trade exception plus the rights to Alex Oriakhi. Remember where we came from.
Well, now is the time to risk and overpay. There’s nothing to wait for. The window of opportunity opened last year.
And I don’t care where the Kings came from (they were a horribly run organization)- only where they are going. And striving to be great, not just “better than we were”. Who cares
I actually agree the time to be aggressive is now, and will be very disappointed if the team makes no or marginal roster moves again this summer. I just dispute the idea that the current FO is incompetent and using the media to hide or excuse it. McNair has proven himself to be a competent GM. Pete D’Alessandro he is not.
I agree that Monte seems to be good/competent but he’s non risk approach may say otherwise. Though, who knows how much is Vivek.
This off season will tell all.
I mean, I’ve even heard Monte saying they are ready to move and he thinks he’s got assets.
That’s the one place Monte has not done very well…garnering assets.
Thanks for keeping it short.
Wonder if GS would trade Moses Moody for #13? They need to shed salary and don’t use him anyway (why I don’t know). Also look for Portland to deal one of their picks. They’ve got too many young guys. Say #14 for Duarte or Mitchell?
Portland traded 14 to Washington.
Ron Holland.
My gut feeling is that we would have to trade up a few spots to get him.
If the kings simply make the pick tonight and that is it for the off-season, I’ll be pretty apathetic heading into the season. If that’s the case two things will need to happen 1) Huerter will need to demonstrate last year was an aberration; 2) Keegan needs to take another step and average 20+ points.
Agree. And Heurter is Heurter. He ain’t getting better or different. It’s why I was astonished he wasn’t gone last off season.
I hope Monte keeps to his philosophy and doesn’t massively overpay on any trade. SAC got here by making smart moves, not desperate ones.
This year’s trade deadline looks to provide better opportunities to seize on other team’s poor roster management since not every team is financially ready for the new CBA (high tax payments for the higher apron teams). If any of those teams are out of playoff contention early and still looking at large tax bills, I want the Kings to be in a position to pounce and take advantage of the one-time situation that the new CBA provides.
Got where exactly? Didn’t make the playoffs and a first round exit?
This team needs to be held to a higher standard. Not being shitty is not enough.
As I’ve said before- sometimes risks and overpay are needed. Especially when your window arrives
lol…its only been 2 years since this team had the league’s longest playoff drought, I don’t actually believe you need to be reminded how this franchise was run before McNair.
What’s so funny to me, is that most of the moves you’re advocating for would ruin a team for the long-term if they don’t work out. That is the exact kind of thinking that the Kings need to avoid. The Kings are not one-piece away yet, they need to become a consistent playoff team first.
OT: Boom. OG staying with Knicks. Randle has got to be on the move now.
https://x.com/wojespn/status/1806088339470397766
Exactly what I said in other thread/my Knicks fan buddies told me they were trying to keep everyone.
Kings want to contend? Gotta be ok going over the tax and overpaying/taking risks.
Im not into middling
He’s got around $60M/2 years remaining on his deal. He’s a former Kentucky Wildcat. He fits well as a Power Forward.
I think that would be a better fit than some of the others mentioned as a PF.
who knows?
I think Randle would be fine. He is tough, rebounds, and can score (not super efficient though). A bit on the short side, but I think he could play well in Sacramento.
Ready for some Ware action! I got a good feeling about this one! 1hr and counting. Come through one time
With Deni going to PDX for the #14, I have to think Monte is calling about Grant for the #13 and contracts.
What if the Blazers want to keep Grant and pair him with Avdija to try and speed up their rebuild?
Then they won’t get Grant.
Where does Sharpe play? They already have Scoot and Simons as the guards. Who is going to be the odd man out?
One of them gets to come off the bench…every team needs a good 6th man.
IMO and from what I’ve seen on Blazers Edge, many believe Simons is not in the team’s long-term plans, but they need both Scoot and Sharpe to continue improving before they’d be willing to move off of Simons since if one of the others doesn’t work out, they still have a legitimate scorer in the back-court.
They could also go small if they move Grant as Deni could play the 4 until they find a better balance.
Washington trades into the lottery at #14 – Adjida for #14 and Brogdon.
Any #13 for Kuzma is now done.
Would need futures to get Kuzma. Grant might be available from Portland.
Huerter, Duarte, Sahsa and #13, for Grant and Camara
Make it so.
I would do that but would Portland?
and #13 goes to Portland.
Yeah, I corrected it.
Why does that take Kuzma off the table? They still have the 26 pick this year. Obviously they are not trying to compete since they just traded Avdija. The wizards would have 13 and 14 this draft.
I don’t really like Kuzma, so I hope he isn’t traded to the Kings.
They do have the 2nd pick in this draft too. At some point Washington would rather have future assets.
Kuzma’s perceived value is all over the place.
Some people think he’s worth 2 1sts, other say he’s worth 2nds and a decent vet. I don’t really like Kuzma so anything but a late 1st for him seems too rich for me. Personally, I hope the Kings pass on him but I would defer judgement on the move until I see Kuz play in an environment that demands effort.
Nic Claxton re-signed with the Nets, 4 years/$100m.
Edey, Ware, Holland, Knecht, Holmes. One of those guys.
Devin Carter’s draft day suit has me thinking the Kings should trade up for him!
Quieter than I expected in here after eleven picks.
Wonder twin powers, activate!
