Sacramento Kings forward De’Andre Hunter will miss eight weeks due to a retinal detachment injury in his left eye, the team announced Friday. The timeframe ends his season.
Hunter sustained the injury to his eye in the Feb. 6 game against the Los Angeles Clippers and had been dealing with left eye iritis. He underwent successful surgery for the detachment Friday, according to the Kings.
Sacramento acquired Hunter on Jan. 31 in the trade that sent Dennis Schroder and Keon Ellis to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played in two games for the Kings, and will finish the season having averaged 13.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2 assists.
The hope was to see what having another forward with size play next to Keegan Murray would look like. That will have to wait until next season.

never understood why more players don’t wear eye protection. didn’t seem to keep kareem or worthy from hall of fame careers.
hope you have a quick and full recovery De’Andre!
With all the hits Domas gets in the face, he needs more than goggles. Maybe a full face mask will do.
hmmm, wonder how bad the detachment was and if he lost some field of vision (or worse).
Get well soon, DeAndre
the retina is the layer of nerve cells that allow us to see, in the back of the eye. A retinal attachment occurs commonly with trauma when the force against the eye causes a tear in the retina. The tear allows blood or fluid to dissect through the hole. This raises the retina off of the nerve cells in the back of the eye. The retina is detached. We lose sight from the part of the retina that is raised and detached. Tears usually occur in the periphery- the outer edge of the retina. Central tears can affect the macula- not a good thing.
Surgery consists of a laser that tacks down the retina and or a band around the eyeball to create backwards pressure and/or a bolus of gas into the eyeball that presses the retina towards the back. The gas slowly absorbs but creates temporary pressure towards the back of the eye. He will have to sit or sleep with his eye pointed downward for 3 weeks in order to let the gas float towards the back of the eyeball to creates the pressure.
The recovery is usually fine. A number of NBA players have had this – Jabbar? maybe
Future eye protection is highly recommended.
Right after the injury he bled. that was a bad sign. A poke in the eye and a scratched cornea does not bleed.
Another subject:
I want the Kings to win this year (losing is winning) . No more winds is fine. The worst record does not result in the #1 pick but while I like AJ, the Kings might do better with a quality PG- Flemings, Wagler, Brown or Acuff.
I will say, I’ve had a retinal detachment from this team this season also.
Kidding aside, get well De’Andre. It looked painful and I would not wish that on anyone.
Damn that sounds painful. I assume he will make a full recovery?
Eye can’t stand to be associated with this team either.
Get well soon, De’Andre. Eye injures are a bitch. Just the thought of it makes my eyes water.
Perry has been eyeing him as a foundational piece for the rebuild!
Basketball Gods doing their work
So 3 Kings players all had season ending surgery within 72 hours of each other? That’s one hell of a groupon.
Does it matter at this point? I’ve been ready for this season to end since last June.
Front office needs a rectal detachment.
Nah, its only Vivek that needs to be detached from this team.
Did the Kings hire the 49ers’ training staff? The injuries piling up
Check for a SMUD substation near the practice facility.
Because the Beam has not been lit in such a long time, all that excess energy is being discharged into other parts of the Kings facilities!
Train wreck, dumpster fire – whatever it is – worst season ever. I said in October this team will be bad due to the poor roster construction. I didn’t think it would be this bad. But not to worry — Vivek is on it and will fix it. Smartest owner in pro sports.
Just ask him.
