Welcome to ‘90 seconds of…’ a short form video series highlighting the signature skills your Sacramento Kings are known for. If this was around in the glory days, you’d see ‘90 seconds of Vlade Divac passing out of the post’ or in the not-so-glory days, ‘90 seconds of John Salmons dribbling the air out of the basketball’ but in this new, exciting era of Kings basketball, we’re learning new stuff about these young players every day, and this series hopes to highlight some of those signature skills these young players possess. ‘Prolific dunker’ is not a phrase I would use to describe De’Aaron Fox’s game, and I would be wrong to leave that off the long list of things the Kings’ starting point guard does exceptionally well.

I was listening to the newest installment of the Road Trippin’ podcast featuring De’Aaron Fox, Marvin Bagley, and Doug Christie, and was pretty surprised when Fox mentioned that he has more dunks this season than Russell Westbrook, and was right near the top of the league among point guards in total dunks.

I crunched the numbers (checked Basketball Reference once) and sure enough, De’Aaron Fox was right. The only point guards with more total dunks than Fox this season are Ben Simmons (130) and Zach LaVine (69) (nice).

The next point guard on the list is De’Aaron Fox with 40 dunks on the year, good for 79th overall in the entire NBA. Fox leads the league in dunks for players 6′5″ and under. Russell Westbrook has 30 dunks this season.

I don’t think this is a particularly important statistic on its own, but we can infer some things from it. For one, dunking is an incredibly high-percentage shot. Fox is 40/41 on dunks this season. He’s near the top of his position in creating the highest-percentage shot you can get. This is obviously good.

It also speaks to his willingness to attack the rim. There is a reason why most of the top-100 dunkers are big men. The paint is where the big men operate, and Fox isn’t afraid to do business in there.

According to Cleaning The Glass, Fox is shooting 62% at the rim, which puts him in the 80th percentile among point guards. He is one of the NBA’s best rim attackers at his position, and while the eyeball test probably could have told you that, it’s always nice when the numbers back it up.
