The Kings announced today that they have waived two-way guard Adam Flagler. Flagler was signed to a two-way contract prior to Summer League along with Jonathan Mogbo. However unlike Mogbo, he struggled in most of his appearances in both Summer League and Preseason. The Kings also recently signed preseason standout Leaky Black to a two-way deal and could be making room to add another player on a two-way with Flagler’s waiving as teams can only have three two-way players under contract.
The Kings are also reportedly looking at scouring the waiver market for another Point Guard in the wake of Ben Simmons’ season-ending injury per Jake Fischer. One of the names being bandied about as a possible option for the Kings is Walter Clayton Jr., who was just waived by the Memphis Grizzlies. Clayton was the 18th pick in the draft just a year ago and split his rookie season between Utah and Memphis as he was part of the trade that sent Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Jazz. Memphis was facing a roster crunch and had to cut two players to make room. Per 1140’s Frankie Cartoscelli, the Kings were high on Clayton in last year’s draft, but he went 6 picks before the 24th pick where the Kings selected Nique Clifford. Clayton averaged 7.8 points, 4.0 assists and 2.1 rebounds as a rookie.
Fischer also mentioned Kevin Porter Jr. as a name the Kings could look to add. Porter Jr. was also cut today by the Milwaukee Bucks. Porter Jr. was the 30th pick in the 2019 NBA draft and has spent time with the Cavaliers, Rockets, Clippers and Bucks, averaging 14.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists. However Porter has had multiple issues both on and off the court, including a 2023 domestic violence arrest for which he took a plea deal. I can’t wait to see how the Kings justify how he fits in with Scott Perry’s pillars if they do sign him.
The Kings could also look to bring in a veteran like the recently cut Elfrid Payton who spent training camp and preseason with the team.
