The Kings take on the Nets at 3pm in Las Vegas Summer League. This time, Mikel Brown Jr. is set to play after missing the first matchup between these two teams at the California Classic. Everyone is available for the Kings except for Jonathan Mogbo, who is getting a rest day.

My oldest became a Kings fan during the Beam team year. I’ve been telling her to pick any other team. Any. Other. Team. Voluntarily rooting for this team is like being excited to get stomach flu and explosive diarrhea. I’m thankful for great [not today] weather and an amazing bar and restaurant scene because being a fan of this team provides zero joy.

The saddest thing about this performance is that 4 of these guys are going to be rotational players this season, and a couple of them might be starters…and they are getting whooped, out hustled, punked, beaten down the court, etc.
Dude, three of the starters started LAST SEASON. And not only that…Niq, Max, and Cardwell have been billed as part of the team’s future.

Sharp has really been the bright spot.
Acuff has 26 on 50% shooting to go with 5 AST. His TOs were bad but some of that can be chalked up to a new set of teammates. And his D is pretty bad. Raynaud and Clifford were downright useless but they’re bench players.
Demin absolutely destroyed Acuff on the defensive side of the floor. A lot of that could be the size difference.

Brooklyn, on the other hand, looked disciplined and were running good sets. Jordi has them going well.
Totally agree…slow starts and unstructured play is something we’ve seen our fair share of. The bad part too is that it basically looked like last years Kings offense. Also what does Perry and Vivek not understand about the need for wings. This team should be packed with wings like the other teams.

Summer league is supposed to be fun. Turning off the game after the first quarter should be for the regular season.
Just on a hunch, I thought it would be fun to look at Stephen Curry’s summer league stats. I assumed given the amazing player he’s become, that he must have lit it up at summer league. Well…
He averaged 17.4 pts, on 32.5% fg% and shot 34% from three. He also averaged 3.6 turnovers to 4.2 assists. Anthony Randolf, Anthony Morrow and Cartier Martin all scored more than he did and the rest of the players didn’t contribute much, although I thought it was cool Joe Ingles was on his team.
I don’t have a point here, just that if a player can be known as a score only, undersized guard for Davidson, I see no reason Acuff can’t have success as well. Neither player were known for defense, and both struggled against their first taste of NBA talent.
Now Acuff could be another Dennis Smith Jr. for all I know. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
My main concern is I can’t see how Max is struggling like he is unless the dude is still jet lagged. And some of his turnovers were just bonkers.
I am also very excited about Sharp. That’s the kind of player that looks like a steal of the draft. But again, it’s summer league. He could come into training camp and build a brick wall in preseason. You just don’t know until they play the games.

When we make this comparison, we should note that Curry in his first three full months in the NBA shot the following from three: .385, .397 and .486, so those struggles absolutely did not flow into the regular season.
Curry did play 3 seasons in college . Also Derek Rose averaged 10 pts in summer league . Whatever any of that means .
And here I was, logging on to TKH thinking I’d missed the game when it turns out it was the Kings who missed the game.

And 1 – what do Kings fans have to look forward to anymore if even the summer league team plays like the regular season team? Summer league was supposed to be when this team almost looked like an NBA team.
The Kings looked awful but come on… it’s Summer League. Nothing that happened today meant anything. I already know the Kings are terrible and the Nets are terrible.
I went into the game expecting to see some NBA talent, because both teams fielded good chunks of the projected rotations. This wasn’t like watching teams with no first round picks and a couple of 2-ways. Both teams look quite a bit like they will come when the regular season starts. I mean, the Kings started 5 guys who are on guaranteed contracts! How often does that happen in summer league? The Nets, in full rebuild, started 4.
What I got from this game was not so much the players, but the franchise, system and culture. The Kings looks lost and disinterested. The Nets look eager, well coached, and ready to make a leap with their many young players.
The Nets have like 5 dudes 20 and under while the Kings have one. It’s a tale of two shit teams attempting to rebuild.
Guess which one is still fucking it up from the top down.
I’ll also add, the Kings are at 13 rostered players (still needing one more) and are currently over the tax line. The Nets are over $40M below the tax and just showed they have more promise and future.
It’s so damn frustrating to keep seeing this franchise repeating their mistakes over and over again.

Mogbo is an easy choice if they want to save money. Hopefully he can improve his shot a bit and play 3/4 (mainly the 4).
Yeah, all of this is true but how is it different than anything you believed going into this? The Kings are projected to be the worst team in the league next year and with good reason.
But the Nets are a terrible organization as well and they’ll be right back at the bottom next year as well. The way they played yesterday doesn’t pre-sage some renaissance for the Nets IMO. They might be not be quite as bad as the Kings (nobody is) but they’re still a mess.
The type of basketball played in Summer League just has no bearing on what will happen in the NBA season. It never has and it never will. The number of “NBA” rotation players the Kings are running out there doesn’t have any impact on what we’ll see in the regular season from these players other than most of them will probably be out of the league in a couple years.
I have started to wonder how much these guys respect Doug and I bet he he has a corny, rah rah act that may rub players the wrong way.

Doug was a cornerstone of the best Kings team ever, an incredibly smart and crafty player with amazing defense and beloved by all. He has just the right leadership qualities and all the intangibles to be a Vivek shill for many more months.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a box score where 13 players got minutes and 12 of the 13 had a negative +/-. And the one who had a positive +/- played only 4 minutes (and was a mighty +4 in those 4 minutes). Thank goodness any hope raised by the first summer league game has already been snuffed out and I can already move on to ‘there’s always the season after next season’.

You can see the talent with Acuff and the accountability. He has so much to process right now, it’s understandable that he can’t focus on defense right now, but that will surely come. Remember that Doug is his coach and that he’ll be going up against Sharp in practice, which will help him improve. Just as Davion did for Fox.
And Perry is building a culture here. But he has to clean up the mess made by his predecessors (and a tiny bit of his own mess). You don’t build six pillars in two years. You need guys like Karaban for that. And Monday morning inspirational quotes, of course.
Just give it 82 games. Then we can come back and invent new reasons to be hopeful and root for this organization and our benign leader, Vivek.
Sad but true. As much as I am actually enjoying a cuff and the possible entertainment and good play, there’s an anchor holding this team back always.

Mikel Brown showed why he was drafted before Acuff.
Had some questionable passes when the easy pass was there, which was how we scouted during the draft cycle.
But overall, he looks damn good.
I ranked to top guards prior to the dreft: Brown, Flemings, Acuff, and then Wagler. I hope I’m wrong about Flemings. Burries looks good too.
