After 10 seasons in the NBA, Trey Lyles is leaving the NBA to play overseas with Real Madrid in the EuroLeague.
Lyles joined the Kings in 2022 as part of the trade that sent Marvin Bagley to the Detroit Pistons. Lyles turned out to be a solid piece in that deal and a nice boost off the bench. His rebounding, stretch shooting, and ability to switch and play small ball center made him an important part of the Kings rotation. He was part of the 2023 Beam Team that finished third in the Western Conference and snapped Sacramento’s 16-year playoff drought.
During his time the Kings he averaged 7.9 points and 4.6 rebounds. His production last season was hampered by injuries and all of the changes the team went through. He averaged 6.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists last season.
Lyles wasn’t flashy but you knew what you were going to get from him – dependable minutes. He had stretches that were vital to some Kings wins.
Beat of luck with Real Madrid, Trey. Thanks for helping snap the drought.

I would have wanted Lyles to sign with the Kings But I am not the GM.
Either he wanted too much (he has accepted pretty team friendly deals in the past) or the Kings just decided to move on without him. Right now he is a better player than I. Jones, Raynaud or Clifford but the Kings must be looking to the future.
He was versatile and dependable. I did not flinch or groan when he came into the game. Hit 3’s and rebounded and had a nasty streak.
I am glad for him that he is going to a good team and that that team is not in the NBA.
as an aside with Cam Thomas signing for the QO (low) I suspect that Kuminga will do the same. “Bet on himself”
The duds have a high opinion of themselves and are clearly just using Kuminga and his contract to get as much for him as possible. Monte could have taken that road with Fox.
Don’t need him or JV because now we have Saric and Eubanks!!!
Eubanks too much on your Saricasm.
Well played!
Saying that you’re not the GM makes me think that maybe you are the GM.
Have a nice weekend, Scott.
That’s always a sure tell….the words ‘But I am not the GM’ usually means one is, lol.
thanks you guys. I quit.
FIFY:
Another Kings rotational player that is out of the league. Does this seem to happen with the Kings more than any other team in the NBA?
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe Sacramento really is the place where NBA careers go to die
Mason Jones is playing overseas now too. Many fans wanted to see him in the rotation. Just lacking quality talent from those 7-10 spots every season.
FWIF a quick look at the Fakers roster from 23-24 turned up Skylar Mays who played 38 games between POR and LAL. Signed and waved by Minny. Played and released in Turkey and now is in the G league?
Wiki
I think it happens with all teams.
The difference is, Mays was never a rotational player for the Lakers. The Kings do have a tendency to have major role players who have their last gasp with the Kings. As an example, Zach Randolph went from starter AND leading scorer on a crappy Kings team to never playing another game of pro ball. Jason Thompson went from starter in Sac to just 47 more NBA games with two teams in one season. Kosta Kufos, Caron Butler, Ty Lawson, Corey Brewer, and maybe Westbrook soon. Sac has become a last sniff of the league for legit NBA players to get one more paycheck.
Yeah, maybe. I’d say Mason Jones is a fair comp for Mays. Mays played twice as many games and over twice the minutes in one fewer year and are similar in age.
I agree on the final contracts thing, but that’s just Vivek’s win now fetish.
Totally a Vivek thing, which is why the Westbrook fixation doesn’t surprise me.
Did Vince Carter end his career with the Kings? I forgot he ever graced us.
He played 58 games for us in 17-18, but then played 2 more years with ATL per BBRef
My guess is that it’s similar to the feeling that “the nobody player had a career game against us” happens to the Kings more than anyone else.
Feels that way, but it’s mostly because we watch more Kings games than other teams.
Anybody else think Trey was better than Marvin Bagley? I certainly do.
I feel like health and the unfortunate timing of his injuries really held Trey’s career back.
I think you were better than Marvin Bagley!
Slamson is way better than MB3.
I’ll miss Trey, I enjoyed watching him play. A very bright guy who also brought toughness to a team in dire need of it.
I’m certain that Lyles is a better player than Eubanks, and I’m pretty sure that Trey is a more capable player than at least a couple of bigs on each team who will be playing NBA minutes this season. Never heard anything but positives about him being a good teammate, and his game was adaptable depending on what was being asked from him.
¡Todo lo mejor en tu nueva aventura, Trey!
¡Treyal Madrid!
Trey seemed like the kind of guy who fit the tough, no-nonsense mold that Perry and Doug are supposedly trying to pattern the team after. Eubanks and Saric, not so much. The only thing that’s giving me even a little hope about Perry is that I think he did really well with the draft. Everything else, well…
Trey leaving the Kings for Spain: “I’m on Tapa the world!”
Also, I have my “Light the Beam” Sac library card thanks to Trey and his involvement with the library. How could you not like that guy!?
FWIW, Lyles is a Rich Paul client and it’s been reported his deal in Spain is for $3.2M and has an NBA opt out clause to return to the states. His vet minimum salary in the NBA would have been $3.6M.
I’m not positive but I’ve heard the Euro League contracts often come with perks like lodging and cars for players. If no contender or great market was ringing his phone here in states, jumping from a crappy NBA team to the best team in the 2nd best basketball league in the world doesn’t seem too difficult of a decision for Trey.
Can’t discount the no-show endorsement deals he probably gets as well!!!
That’s a kick in the Ballmers.
Or at least a firm grip of the Ballmers.
That’s bound to happen when it’s microsoft.
Lmao looks like he’s a thigh guy.
Kawhi would you suggest such a thing?
All the best to him in RM, although I’m not too disappointed he won’t return for us. He was too inconsistent for my liking….could put up 15/6 one night, then 12/4 the next…but disappears for the next 6 gms after that.
Thanks Trey for those games you made a difference. Never liked when he was our back up 5. Enjoy the Iberian ham in Spain
Congratulations to Keegan! He’s now a married man.
I wonder if he was too shy to say any vows.
Wait…. is that Kris??
Keegan got cold feet. Told his brother to fill in for him.
Sorry to lose Trey Lyles. Another player I respected and appreciated. Kings management keeps making foolish decisions.
I’m pretty damn sure Eubanks, McDermott and Saric are all not as good at basketball as Trey is.
3 vets not as good as the vet you didn’t bring back that fits what you say you want.
Three, not one, not two, three. And I’m supposed to feel optimistic or even excited about this Kings team?
Kings: “He’s a key contributor for us, a big part of our rotation!”
Every Other NBA Team: “Pass.”
I like Trey, but this is just another example of how Kangz fans (and the front office) just don’t think objectively about their players. It spans generations of leadership, too. Jason Thompson started for the Kangz for years–the team just couldn’t find anyone better, eh was that solid!–then, as soon as he left, he was out of the league. Bjelica, Bogdanovic, Terrence Davis, the list goes on. One man’s trash is the Kangz’s irreplaceable treasure.
This take is lame. Like its the fans’ fault the team has to hoist up mediocre players when other teams have 2 and 3 superstars with 3 name brand guys along for the ride. We can be “objective” and still lament a fan favorite not being re-signed or getting traded. And after putting hands on Lopez for trying to act like a tough guy, Lyles def became a fan favorite. Why can’t we just appreciate a player that shows out for the jersey and not be criticized for “overvaluing” someone? No one said he (or JT, for that matter) was the second coming of Chris Webber.
Stopping by to add – who’s overvaluing? Are you telling me you’d rather have DrewBanks or McBuckets over Lyles? Or that those guys are somehow better than Lyles, objectively?
Amid the current situation, give me Lyles over just about every 2025 off season acquisition we made that wasn’t part of the draft. Objectively.
I bet you’ve been clamoring for Kuminga all summer, too.
Not sure who to contact in this case, but I tried to make a purchase on TKH store and I got this message: Shipping ERROR: Invalid API key
I couldn’t figure it out. Hopefully someone can help me out. There’s a couple of tshirts I really want!
