After much speculation, the Kings will be signing Dennis Schröder to a 3 year, $45 million deal per Shams Charania. However it remains to be seen if this is a straight up signing or will be a sign-and-trade involving Kings guard Malik Monk. It’s possible that this is simply a straight signing and a reason why the Kings cleared up additional salary earlier today by sending Jonas Valanciunas to Denver for Dario Saric. All previous reports had seemed to indicate that Schröder was receiving a two year deal from the Kings, but it looks like some last minute negotiating added one more.
Rumors began flying yesterday afternoon after news broke that Schröder was going to sign with the Kings but terms weren’t disclosed. Soon after a report from Jake Fischer indicated that Detroit was considering trading for Malik Monk, which would have made the Schröder deal a sign-and-trade. ESPN’s 1320 seemed to corroborate these reports, but as of now that doesn’t seem to be happening or at least was not corroborated by ESPN. Vincent Goodwill, a Yahoo Sports reporter based in Detroit and historically plugged in with the Pistons, added a further wrinkle to this by noting that Schröder’s deal only contains a partial guarantee in the 3rd year, and that while no sign-and-trade has been agreed to as of yet, that could still change in the coming days. It should be noted that a sign-and-trade has to be for a three year deal, so perhaps a partial guarantee for the third year is simply to add a sweetener for Schröder while also leaving the door possible for future negotiations with the Pistons before the signing actually becomes official. It remains to be seen just how much of that third year is guaranteed though.
If the Kings ended up using their Mid-Level Exception on Schröder, that leaves them with only the Bi-Annual Exception (about $5.1 million for two years) and minimum contracts to sign further free agents, or negotiating other sign-and-trades (as they’d have to do if they pursue their rumored interest in Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga). The Kings could also go over the cap to re-sign their own free agents, which at this point basically just consists of Trey Lyles after Jake LaRavia left to Los Angeles.
Schröder will presumably be Sacramento’s starting Point Guard for the foreseeable future. Sacramento will be his 10th team, and he has career averages of 13.9 points, 4.9 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 0.8 steals a game over 12 seasons.
UPDATE 11:09 AM:
Marc Stein reports that the Schröder deal is a direct signing, no sign-and-trade. He also mentions this likely means no Russell Westbrook either since Malik Monk will remain in Sacramento, at least for now.
The 3rd year being partially guaranteed made me feel better about it. Plus they keep Monk, it looks like.
Win-Win! But we will lose.
.
Awful deal. Shit franchise.
But how do you really feel?
You don’t want to know.
Is Dennis Schroder $ 17 million better than Ty Jerome? At his age? It’s really bad, and I am 99% sure the Kings were only bidding against themselves. Ridiculous.
I now understand why Scott Perry is loved around the league. He’s like Santa Claus.
Ty Jerome has been injured almost every season. Last year was the only season he played more than 48 games. He is 28 and has had one good/healthy season. He also doesn’t really play “PG”, more of a combo guard like Malik.
That being said, I don’t think Schroeder is worth what the Kings signed him for.
Correct about Ty Jerome. 3 years 45 mil is a bit long for me. Schroder however can play but at any time given his age his skills could decline. No sign of that yet.
This is a very lost organization as much as I like Schroder as a basketball player. They might as well sign Westbrook now and hope for a resurrection like when he played for Washington.
I was ok with a two year contract because it was very moveable. At this price and length it’s more difficult to move.
The 3rd year is a partial guarantee, so they could move on after year 2.
The roster is still a mess, and a sub 40 win year is on the horizon.
It’s been mentioned but do we really know the final details of this trade.
No trade, it was a straight signing.
The NBA should adopt a promotion/relegation system so that these losers can end up in the G League where they belong
More Stockton Games will draw the big ticket players!
and they have a winning culture there
It’s not even that awful. It’s just so utterly pointless.
Super Team, just meh.
Dario Saric and Denis Schroder in and LaRavia and Valanciunas out lmao this shit sucks so much
I don’t know if the advanced metrics back this up: but I would surmise the defense of Valanciunas/LaRavia is > Schroder/Saric. But, you know, got to get those hard-nosed defensive guys by trading yours away.

Does that mean we get a free wing?
How does the 2026 draft class look?
It looks like Boston and/or Indiana will get a top 3 pick.
Serious question: Do we think that there are eight teams in the East that are better than Indy (sans Hali) and Boston (sans Tatum)?
Indy starting Obi now that Turner is gone?
Probably? Tony Bradley has insane per minute counting stats, but I don’t know much about him.
He’s Dwight Powell, Mason Plumlee level. He’s not a starter. More of a 3rd 5. Maybe he’s younger Alex Len.
They have RFA status on Isaiah Jackson?
They made the QO. He is recovering from November Achilles surgery, so probably not a go by the beginning of the season.
I would not be surprised if these teams will turn on the tank for a season.
I think that there is too much depth and talent on those respective rosters, but we’ll see.
Boston going from a title contender to a single year tank to a title contender, while we win 35-40 games with a bunch of 30+ year old veterans and get the 13th pick sadly explains a lot of our struggles to adapt to the modern NBA the last 25 years.
Terrified over the prospect of landing here?
I’ll put his jersey right next to my George Hill, Dwayne Dedmon, and Marco Belinelli jerseys.
This one goes next to the Darren Collison jersey.
Turns out that when the GM is just a yes man for your dumbass owner, you make some dumbass moves.
I was good yesterday when it looked like this was a one year rental contract. Now it’s just another bad contract they’ll have to give up resources to get out of later.
You can argue the merits of the signing at this price, but from the team’s perspective as it concerns flexibility, it’s an easily movable contract, which makes it pretty good.
Many of the leagues teams have already had Dennis and at less money . Doubt this will be an easy contract to move . He will be 32 soon !
You aren’t looking at it the right way. When we’re talking about players like Schroder, which is to say, end-of-the-rotation and serviceable, the players are largely irrelevant.
For that class of player and below, the only thing that teams are truly interested in is the terms of the contract. Two guaranteed years at $15 million per, and a partially-guaranteed third. At the moment, a contract like that makes for excellent filler as part of a larger deal, and when Schroder eventually goes, that’s how it will play.
There have been other peculiar signings so far, and they are primarily about asset acquisition. The asset is the contract, not necessarily the player.
I agree mostly. This franchise hasn’t done a particularly good job packaging those assets for a more favorable asset. They tend to attach additional assets to be rid of the initial assets. This seems not good.
It’s less than ideal. Still, it’s better than having a roster full of contracts like Lavine’s. The potential with smaller contracts is there should all of the other moving parts align.
Will we ever see it happen? I just don’t know. You lump Schroder together with DeRozan and maybe bring back a large expiring deal, or even something like Lavine’s deal but with draft assets. Better to not take back too much money, but as with everything, it depends on the particulars.
This. That guy isn’t going anywhere, and certainly isn’t going to bring in a meaningful asset later.
That. If you somehow inferred that I said that Schroder on his own could be flipped for a difference-maker, you need to lay off the Kentucky bluegrass, featherbed bench, and northern California sinsemilla.
Ramon Session type signing
Possibly, But seems closer to Ty Lawson, Derrick Collision or even Cory Joseph .
The hall of mediocrity

Dead-to-me-pool.
No I wouldn’t put Schroder as a basketball in that category.
STAY TREY
I keep hearing that is a “gap year”. Kings don’t have gap years, they have gap decades.
I think we’re in a gap century.
Everything about this franchise is one step forward, two steps back. Except for when it’s zero steps forward and two steps back.
I’d love to know what the actual plan is for this team, but everything about their moves since running it back in 2023/2024 tells me there isn’t one.
Vivek running this thing like most modern companies: screw long term planning, how can we wring as much short term profit out as we can?
Yep, this franchise is 2 years away from being 2 years away . Actually, that is a bit optimistic .
Right? More like two years away from actually being able to start a proper rebuild given the Lavine, Sabonis, Monk, DDR, and now Schroder contracts.
No idea which of those will be able to move when, or if any even have a decent value.
It is a rolling two years that restarts with each new GM and/or coach.
Reset button gets pushed more than an NES console.
This organization sucks and I don’t see a way out of the basement. And yes, 36 wins and barely making the play in game is totally the basement.
There are about 25 competently run organizations in this league. Then there are five or so teams – Kings at the top of that list – that are just sad excuses for a professional sports franchise.
What bums me out the most about the state of this team is there just isn’t a single glimmer of hope. You can’t even squint and find a positive.
Scott Perry is a likeable yes man with a totally mediocre/borderline legitimately bad resume. Zero faith in this guy.
Vivek is a total dumbass. Leave it at that.
This roster is a mess. No top end talent. No depth. And even though Keegan and Keon are fun to root for, they’re just so blah as personalities. We don’t even have a super cool fun guy on the team. It’s just uninspired from the top to the bottom.
Well run teams do things like extract value at opportune times. Well run teams recognize when their small window of opportunity is open and take big risks and go for it. Well run teams know when to call it quits and stock the asset cupboard for the long term.
The Kings continue to have no plan. No path. No identity. No vibes. Just straight boring and incompetent.
I would be actually shocked – shocked – if the Kings make the actual playoffs within the next 5 seasons. I just see zero hope for it. They stink and don’t know how to operate an organization.
I ALSO would be shocked – shocked! – if the Kings tear down and rebuild and pick an actual path.
They can’t win and they won’t lose. Worst of both worlds. Sad stuff
Please, limit yourself to one “shocked – shocked!” per post. This isn’t something that you want to gamble with.
Your winnings, sir…
Kings fans: The Kings are idiots! They need a rebuild! We should suck and tank this season for a better pick!
Kings: Signs meh-PG Schroeder
KIings fans: That PG sucks! He does not make us better. The Kings are idiots!
*rinse and repeat*
No, it’s because it just keeps the Kings middling. It’s not a rebuild or a competitive move. This will have no effect on the W/L column.
With every move we continue to get older while the win total continues to decline.
The Kings signing Schroder is not the issue here, it’s the lack of any other meaningful moves while nearly every other team in the league was able to figure out ways to improve.
The Kings keep treading water as they get pushed further out to sea by the tide.
Horrible overpay for 6th man journeyman now tasked with being a starter.
Kinda like Monk?
They didn’t even move Monk! It’s just a bunch of redundancy. This team is all combo guards, Sabonis, and Keegan.
Monk is a pretty ideal 6th man and was a legitimate 6th MOTY candidate two years in a row right in his prime.
Schroder is a 32 year old who was on 3 teams last year and frankly, shouldn’t even be a 6th man anymore. He hasn’t been close to a positive BPM in 5+ years.
He’s not great at catch and shoot, is ok but not great running the P&R, isn’t good scoring inside, and while he’s decent at POA defense, he’s 6’1″ and not a good team defender at all.
And again, he’s 32, so that is a description of him last year, but he could easily continue to decline the next year or two as his speed dips further.
I really don’t mind him as a stopgap who can rotate to the bench (and will probably do so without causing waves) if we draft or trade for a better PG option.
But I don’t think he’s really going to move the needle much either as a starter or a 6th man. And I do wonder if we will look back and wish we had just signed someone like Tyus Jones for half the price.
There’s a non-zero chance that Tyus Jones didn’t want to come here when he had the opportunity to land with a rising team. That’s a lot of why he took a discount, but if he has a solid year, someone will offer him nine figures over four years.
———————————————–
Free agency in Sacramento:
Would this guy be a good fit? YES
Should we go after him? YES
Can we force him to come here? NO
100%. Just odd that Tre Jones, Ty Jones, and Ty Jerome all go for very similar salaries and Shroder basically goes for double.
Shroder is arguably a bit more proven, but just feels like a Kings tax should not be 2x the market rate.
TBH, Ty Jerome not a PG – he is a taller, less athletic version of Monk.
IMO, Schroder is a bit better than both of the Jones bros and was the best PG available in FA, but is he twice as good…no.
I like Schroder, I don’t like the 3yrs (should’ve been 1 with a TO)
Other than mentioning he’s 32 and could slide at any time (hasn’t happen edge yet) you’re just not accurate about Schroder. You need to go watch him a little more because you’ve totally downgraded his ability.
Dude, just look at his stats. He really has no business being a starting PG on any team.
Challenge for everyone: name a worse starting PG in the league. Where does Schroeder rank out of 30?
You compared their stats yesterday, and they were fairly similar, if I recall. I don’t think it matters between the two players, neither one is an amazing talent that lifts a team to be a winner.
Maybe it’s just me watching Monk do fly-by closeouts, get beat on back cuts because he is ball watching, sagging sooooooo far off his defender to support the paint defense, dribble to the baseline into 3 defenders and throw it away, or simply just lose the ball with his loose handle for the past 3 seasons. I’m ready for a change. (not that I wanted them to get Schroeder, btw).
As a starting PG – I’d put him at 27/30
Better than Collier (Jazz)
Better than Kevin Porter Jr. (Bucks – no PG?)
Better than Poole? (Pelicans – without DJ Murray, who is PG?Alvarado?)
Won a gold medal with Germany and was MVP. 2023.
you are so wrong and I’m done debating this because the people who say this crap haven’t watched him enough or at all.
I’ve watched him and I am open, but what part?
Not like all of Monk’s stats are great, but there’s some real data to support him as a good player, especially if you give him any kind of mulligan for injuries and the mess that the team was last year. He was 26, so doubt he has fallen off versus the prior two seasons.
Schroder doesn’t really have that. His impact numbers are bad, his shooting numbers are bad, and his inside scoring numbers are bad. His PPP in play types like the P&R is mid. And his size greatly limits his defensive impact.
We are in a league getting bigger and relying on more swichable and versatile defenders. We have a star big who is not a shot blocker and benefits from being on a team with extra paint congestion and rim protection. And Schroder isn’t especially switchable and provides less in the paint than Monk. Monk doesn’t provide a lot, but he has some hops and will at least get some blocks.
Schroder’s best feature is his passing, but if you are going to play him off ball next to LaVine, DeRozan, and Sabonis then you are minimizing that. Last couple season’s that’s more how he’s been used and he’s been at about a 28% assist rate to Monk’s 24%. Now, he is more of a pure passer and would have a higher rate if he was a top 2 option, but if he is, then your franchise is in a lot more trouble.
But I am open minded here. What is the case for him as more than a stopgap?
Who is making the case that Schroder is anything but a stopgap?
Fair on the last sentence. Guess this was more about him being better or as good as Monk, which should have been the summation.
Schroder is more of a rotational bench player at this stage. I just don’t see what the other poster was seeing.
I think Monk and Schroeder are on the same level as players, just bring some different skill sets. Neither should be a starter. Both are just rotational guards for mid-level teams.
Devil in the details, but I think Monk still has some high level 6th MOTY quality years left and Schroder is more a stop gap player where his advanced numbers have mostly been on the decline (even if they had a minor recovery from his year on the Lakers) if you look at the trendline and will probably only continue to deteriorate over the next two years.
2023 gold medal with Germany beating Australia and the United States. Mvp. Nuff said
This is such a ridiculous statement to make to justify him as a starting PG for the Kings.
Kangz
He’s a below average NBA player and is now the starting point guard. Ugh, not a fan of this signing. If he were the backup for a smaller contract, I’d be fine, but this feels like desperation.
If you think he’s been a below average player, you need to watch more basketball. Go watch the 2023 world games or just watch Pistons in this years playoffs.
We can bitch and moan just so much about just so much.
The Schröder signing fits a need, to some extent. Trading away Viking Jonas Val is a bigger drop in my book. He was arguably the best backup 5 in the League (maybe Steven Adams, but it’s an argument or he’s top 2), he’s a Lithuanian friend to Domas, and he fits some narrative of big, bad ass, players that I am thinking is part of the “We are the New Kings and this is our type of player” that Scott Perry alluded to.
Dario Saric? Yes, he’ a minimum contract veteran, but that’s it. If GM Divac did this, I would figure it is some buddy pick (Duje Dukan, also Croatian) because he’s a clown. Now that GM Perry did this, I can only assume it is a salary dump and the Kings are tanking as they once again have no back up for their best player, or indeed, it is Vlade Divac working the phones.
This is more to complain and wonder about than the Schröder pick up. I mean, trading away Valanciunas for Saric, and to Denver? whiskey tango foxtrot!?
The trade with Val should have included Watson. Great trade for Denver but at least we removed some payroll.
Ha! Why would Denver trade a young, defensive wing for an aging backup C? That’s what bad GMs do.
because having a serviceable backup 5 saves wear and tear on your All World superstar – and that is worth it’s weight in gold.
Yes, and they traded Saric for JV, which accomplishes that. Watson for JV would have been dumb for Denver. Now they keep Watson AND add JV to spell Jokic. Meanwhile, the Kings intend to sign Eubanks. Just a different level of competency by these franchises.
when I suggested Val would be a great fit for Denver several days before the trade, many said Denver isn’t interested in Val. Now that it happened he we go with the qualifications. The Kings may not tried for Watson because his contract is coming up after next year, idk that but my point regarding Val was well made in advance.
Here’s your backup center
6’9 backup Center, lol. Talk about a bad signing.
Yeah, but he’s 28 and Jonas is 33. So we’re getting younger!!!
Yeah, it still sucks
If you are Domantas Sabonis – how are you feeling right now?
You are in your prime, you play your ass off for the Kings the last 3 seasons and you finally get not only one of the best backups in the League, but a fellow Lithuanian friend and National teammate, to give you some well earned rest. He’s on a cheap contract, $10M/year for the next two years.
Nope – trade him away for two smalls. The Craotian Trey Lyles and pale Richaun Holmes. You have a rookie who went #42 in the draft as your 3rd 5.
I don’t like this frontcourt. I really liked having Viking Val.
If Domas goes down or Keegan goes down – who’s their replacement?
Well, we wanted them to tank. I think they are on their merry way. But they will end up being 8th or something in the draft.
Am I drinking too much, or are ‘Da Bullz’ still with the Kangz? Did I miss something?
What about Devin Carter for Cam Whitmore?
What about Malok Monk and Devin Carter for John Collins?
What about Malik Monk and 2 seconds for PJ Washington and Norman Powell?
I like it. I suppose that means the FO doesn’t.
It takes two teams to make a trade. Rockets have FVV, Reed Shepherd, and re-signed Aaron Holiday. All are better than Carter. True that they don’t have a spot for Whimore, but I think they can do better than Carter, or find a different type of player that matches a need. Carter also makes more than Cam, so they might not want the additional couple million on the books.
I sure would give it a try. The guy is what we are looking for at small forward. Watch his highlights.
Stopping to think about what reported moves have happened in Basketball Hell. We all wanted roster changes, but apparently not the ones that the GM is making.
Out:
Laravia – we all knew the salary limitations the Kings had on a contract offer to him. Would have been nice to have. However, he was injured and his play was up and down.
JV – Great backup Center. Big, tough, but limited in many ways, and made $10m to play 16.9mpg on a 40 win roster. I think the money is needed in different spots on the roster.
In:
Schroeder – Meh PG that adds defense and more of a floor general type of PG. Limited outside shot reliability, small, and cost about $5m/year too much.
Saric – They had to get something back from Denver (lol). Non-factor, probably won’t play much, if at all.
Draft picks – Nique and Max. See what they can do as rookies. Who knows.
Looking at the moves above, the Kings kind of just shuffled things around and don’t appear to be any better, as of now. I think most wanted to see DDR or LaVine moved, and for a legit starting caliber PG brought in to the rotation. That always seemed to be a fantasy. I think many also wanted the Kings to tear it all down (which ownership wouldn’t let happen), but it takes other teams to want what the Kings had to offer and it doesn’t seem like any teams want the Kings players (as of now).
I expect another race for the 11th or 12th seed, a frustrating season filled with loads of apathy. That is life here in Basketball Hell.
As of right now, it’s a mediocre team of players I don’t really want to watch. If they can move DDR and Monk for a rotational 4/5, I’ll at least be interested.
A blowup and running out a bunch of youth that would bust their ass on both ends of the floor would be much more enjoyable for me than what we watched the second half of last season.
Yeah, next season will be even more of a train wreck to watch. Always remember, things can get worse as a Kings fan.
Looking at who the Kings have gained ground on / lost ground to to this point:
I don’t see them gaining ground on any of the eight teams that finished above them. Memphis did lose Bane (and gained Ty Jerome), so maybe they picked up a little there, keeping in mind that Ja missed 32 games last year.
As it pertains to the teams underneath them, Dallas landed Flagg and will get full camp (injuries notwithstanding) of AD, Kyrie and Flagg. They’re better (again, health). San Antonio landed Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, and will have a full Wemby camp with Fox. They’re better. If both of those teams play to paper they could drop the Kings to 11.
Portland’s weird, but they did close hard and strong last year. They could very well battle for 11-12.
Zion is such a big “if,” but his health would add to the mix. Beyond that, I probably have the Kings still ahead of Phoenix and Utah.
So no play-in, no playoffs, and something like the 8-9 slot in the draft (ping pong balls notwithstanding). Not a particularly full asset cabinet, either. We could be here for a while.
Have we heard anyone say the Kings gained ground on anyone. I mean what’s the point.
Maybe something more relevant, overall when considering roster, payroll, draft capital and player contracts, I can’t think of any NBA franchise that would exchange positions with the Kings.
Good, I hope they all pass the Kangz. I’m rooting for more ping pong balls.
My issue is the lack of a viable plan. If they were going to salary dump JV for additional flexibility, they should’ve done that days ago and then re-upped Keon first.
Players who are in your long-terms plans should be made the priority; you should NEVER make stop-gap or short-term players your priority to the detriment of your long-term plans. Just idiotic.
These moves are out of order and don’t make sense unless you realize that they don’t have a plan are just “feeling” it out as they go.
To me, the difference is that I have already fully given up on this team and am rooting for a 25 win season before it even starts. Last year at this time, I had been totally beaten down by the previous season but felt like it might have been an anomaly. Any shuffling of the deck chairs or weakening of this team is a positive to me at this point. Burn this motherfucker to the ground, Perry. I don’t give any fucks if it’s by design or by sheer Kangzy stupidity.
I’m already at the point where I’ll only watch if Keon, Carter, Nique, and maybe Maxime get solid minutes. The only things I care about are 1.) lose a fuckload of games 2.) play the youngsters. I’ve seen enough DDR and LaVine to last a lifetime. If they aren’t traded, I can only hope that Christie has the nuts to restrict their playing time.
The money seems high but I’m otherwise ok with the signing. Schroder isn’t an effective scorer but he won’t really need to be since there’s approximately 25 shooting guards on this team that can go get buckets. As long as he can bring the ball up the court without dribbling off his foot he’s about the same as any other realistic option.
The contract length is also not really a problem. Even if the Kings draft a point guard next year like we all hope rookie PGs – even good ones – can take a year or two to become full time starters.
Drew Eubanks has entered the chat.
Some might call him the Shaq of Troutdale.
Im sure he’s end of bench guy but pretty early in FA to sign Drew Eubanks ????
Well, there was so much complaining in here about moving Valanciunas that something had to be done.
Eubanks is fine.
The problem I have with moving JV was that he was a low-value asset and didn’t need to be salary-dumped and even if he did (have to be dumped), it should’ve done several days ago. Poor timing and poor asset management again.
[edited for syntax]
Can’t even watch Hali next year and now also have to watch Schroeder flop around and make bonehead plays. Just give us the team Shaqtin a Fool trophy now if we get Westbricks…why play chess or even checkers…when you can lose at tic tac toe #Kangz
I love the Kings but I hate this team SOOOOoooo much.
