2025 NBA Draft First Round Open Thread

By | 130 Comments | Jun 25, 2025

Jun 26, 2024; Brooklyn, NY, USA; Devin Carter walks on stage after being selected in the first round by the Sacramento Kings in the 2024 NBA Draft at Barclays Center. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Happy NBA Draft Day!  Please use this open thread to discuss Day 1 of the 2025 NBA Draft which features the first 30 picks. As a reminder, starting last year the NBA Draft is now two days, with the second round happening tomorrow.

Tonight’s Draft coverage starts at 5 pm Pacific on ESPN and ABC.  The Kings don’t currently have a pick in the first round, but that doesn’t mean that can’t change with the Kings reportedly being interested in getting back into the first round.  We’ll be sure to keep you updated on any trades or picks that the Kings might make tonight along with reaction.

Sucks not having a pick, draft day is all Kangz fans usually have to look forward to, although the last five years or so when draft day rolls around the first thought that always pops into my head is passing on Luka.

It is so frustrating having a bad team AND no draft pick. Will this front office (ermm owner?) ever learn to stop trading away picks for middling, often over paid players? This team isn’t sniffing the playoffs in the next five years, and thats being generous.

Disagree, the main knock on Ace is his lack of defensive awareness. He gives me Marvin Bagley of wings vibes. Kon is actually a pretty solid defender.

This is just flat out untrue. Kon was a better defender this year than Ace by a WIDE margin. Go read Sam Vecenie as he’s talked about Kon’s defense at length on multiple platforms. He’s a much better defender than people realize. He’s strong and understands positioning better than almost anyone in this draft.

I watch I know. His feet and lateral movement are slow and it will be problematic in the NBA. He’s worse than what people are saying. Not being mentioned too much. I will also add, he will have trouble creating a shot in the NBA. He’ll be effective as a spot of shooter but he’ll be exposed on defense and limited offensively.

Ace has the tools to be a good defender just hasn’t emphasized it in his game. Knuppel doesn’t have the tools. He’s okay off ball and gets into, good helping position but on ball he is atrocious.

I have watched plenty of Kon and I disagree. He’s not ultra athletic but I think he might have the best feel of any player in the draft. Just feels like a connector who will make his team better. I think Ace has the tools to be excellent if his head is screwed on straight so we’ll see. Also, all of the really smart draft people I like to read/listen to think Kon is going to be a very good player if not necessarily a star. I’ll take that with the 4th pick.

Those same smart people thought Kispert would be great. Watch money ball. A lot of these guys hanging around who are caught up in paradigms and we listen to them just because they’ve been around for awhile. They miss a lot and don’t often think out of the box. After watching the playoffs you will see how important it is to have guys that can defend multiple players. Clifford to me fits that criteria, Not Knuppel

Kon may end up being fantastic. But it is not a coincidence Sac and Charlotte are two of the consistently worst franchises. Bailey falls to them and they pick Kon. I would suspect he is a bust simply off past draft histories.

The Indiana Pacers are trading a 2030 Sacramento Kings second-round pick and cash to the San Antonio Spurs for the No. 38 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, league sources told @hoopshype. So exciting! Watch the Spurs target whoever the Kings want to pick.

Me too, its his best position right now. Although I believe that once Murray fills out, he’ll be a very good PF.

Looks like the 27 Spurs first 1-16 protected. So, not horrible.

Immediately turns into second rounders if it doesn’t convey I guess.

2027 from Spurs 1-16 protected (goes to seconds if it doesn’t convey).

Please anyone correct me if that’s incorrect.

Only if they had drafted wing players when Fox wanted them to….

2027 Spurs pick (1-16 protection, 2 seconds of it doesn’t convey)

Good late round pick. Does a little of everything. Not a huge have changer. What did we give up?

Sucks so bad to see everyone else get so many good players while Kings spin in the washing machine.

Like what the Nets are doing, Danny Wolf this late. Good for them.

Just saw the trade details for Clifford ????

Kings traded their protected 2027 SA first round pick (protected 1-16).

It will immediately roll into two seconds in 2027 if it doesn’t convey.

I think the chances of the Kings drafting 1-16 in 2027 are pretty good.

It’s San Antonio’s pick

Pretty win-win.

OKC’s warchest is stuffed to bursting, so this gets them a pretty equivalent pick later.

Kings get young talent now, and hold onto the unprotected upside to the pick should San Antonio suddenly implode.

Thanks, I was a little confused about the protections, I couldn’t remember whether the pick had been originally protected when it came to us. But based on your comment, if San Antonio picks 1-16 in 2027, that pick comes to us, and OKC gets the Kings’ and Hornets’ second rounders in 2027. If SAS picks 17-30, the pick goes to OKC, and Sac keeps its own 2nd rounder and Charlotte’s. That was how I understood it, but glad that someone else seems to understand it the same.

Are we all in agreement that this team has to trade a guard or two before the season starts? Simple draft move and I’m not mad at it but it didn’t really fill any holes this team has.

The problem is who’s going to pick up those contracts. Not that easy to move.
