Sacramento Kings trade Garrett Temple for Ben McLemore, Deyonta Davis, and Cash Considerations

Welcome back Ben

The Sacramento Kings are trading Garrett Temple to the Memphis Grizzlies for Ben McLemore, Deyonta Davis, and cash considerations, according the ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. McLemore returns to Sacramento after a single season in Memphis, after spending his first four years with the Kings. The Kings selected McLemore 7th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft.

Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee has confirmed the news.

Deyonta Davis is a 21 year old, 6’11” Center who averaged 5.8 points and 4 rebounds in 15 minutes per game last season.

Cash Considerations is a familiar player for Kings fans. CC has been involved in so many Kings trades that he actually was traded to the Kings on draft night for their second round pick.

This trade is simply baffling. The Kings cut about $1 million in salary, plus whatever they receive back in cash. But the Kings were already about $9 million below the salary floor for this coming season. The trade also takes up another roster spot, adds yet another center to a roster full of them, and brings back Ben McLemore who very certainly cannot man the small forward role. Temple was seen as a possible fall back option at small forward, but the hole at the 3 just got bigger.

The only justification I can think of right now is that this is positioning pieces for another trade, but that’s purely speculative. We will continue to update as this story evolves.

Update: The Kings are also receiving a 2021 2nd round pick from Memphis.

This means the Kings will receive two 2nd round picks in 2019, two in 2020, and two in 2021 (details available here).
