It should be no surprise that the Kings are scouring the rest of the NBA in search of a long-term solution at Point Guard. Yesterday we learned that there have been preliminary talks between the Heat and Kings regarding Goran Dragic, but there doesn’t seem to be anything imminent there.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Kings are one of the most persistent suitors for Minnesota’s starting Point Guard Ricky Rubio, a player many Kings fans were enamored with prior to the 2009 NBA Draft in which Sacramento selected Tyreke Evans.

The Kings being interested in Rubio is just common sense, as is Minnesota’s unwillingness to entrust their franchise to a rookie without seeing how he plays first. Rubio is one of the more talented playmakers in the league, averaging 8.3 assists for his career. He’s also a very good defender, which makes him more valuable to a young Timberwolves team under the guidance of Tom Thibodeau.

Rubio is not without his faults though, in particular his shooting. Rubio has yet to shot even 39% from the field in 5 seasons in the NBA, with a career FG% of just 36.8%. That makes Rajon Rondo look like a sharpshooter. Rubio has also had many injury concerns throughout his career, only playing relatively full seasons twice in five years.

Rubio isn’t the only guy the Kings are after, as it seems they’re determined to look at a multitude of options when it comes to finding a new Point Guard. According to Woj, the Kings and Thunder were having serious talks on a deal that would have involved Rudy Gay and second-year player Cameron Payne. That deal might have happened but Payne broke his foot in September and those talks have since been put on hiatus. Payne was high on Sacramento’s rumored draft board in 2015 but Vlade Divac and co. went with Willie Cauley-Stein instead.

It seems almost certain that the Kings will be trying to acquire a new Point Guard throughout this season, but only time will tell if they can succeed. I definitely think things will heat up around December 15th, which is the first day that players signed this summer can be traded, thus leading to a lot more flexibility and options for teams in trades. With Rudy Gay’s future in Sacramento uncertain, he seems the prime candidate to be dangled in these kind of talks as the Kings will almost certainly get nothing for him if they can’t find a deal by this year’s trade deadline.
