Pleasant Grove wins state high school championship

We don't cover much high school ball, but a local team is now the Division I state championship. Huzzah!

For only the fifth time ever, a Sacramento area team has been crowned the best in the state in a major division. On Friday the Pleasant Grove Eagles beat Santa Monica to win the CIF State Division I championship to bring the trophy to Elk Grove. The Eagles did it despite only one player who is looking at a likely D-I NCAA scholarship (sophomore Marquese Chriss).

Santa Monica has a couple of players who will be earning their stripes at Division I NCAA schools, so this was something of an upset. Sacramento teams winning upsets? I can do that.

Cheers to any Pleasant Grove folks on StR. It's a fairly new school, so we may not have any alumni, but hey. You never know.

(Big ups to Sheldon High, too. Pleasant Grove's rival beat the Eagles three times this season, but was bumped from Division I to the new Open Division on account of being awesome. Sheldon made it to the NorCal finals, where powerhouse Archbishop Mitty took care of them. Elk Grove, everybody!)
